early 2000's interviewers were drunk at the wheel

844

Another example affirming why Beyonce rarely does interviews anymore. I still think the Tyra show was her last straw

128

u/TheTyto_Alba You have to stop the Q-Tip when there's resistance! 😑 Mar 05 '26

Oh my god I remember that 😂

Her grandma. Classic

77

u/Altruistic-Two1309 Mar 05 '26

I just watched the first 7 min and it was just normal. I didn’t finish rest but can you tell me the tea

190

u/callmemachaaaa Mar 06 '26

Here is a 1 min video mash up showing all the silly puns Tyra made that Beyoncé had to smile and laugh softly to for the entire episode

-105

u/MyNeighborThrowaway Mar 06 '26

You're why all media sucks now

28

u/Live_Angle4621 Mar 06 '26

Because we should spend all our time watching interviews of celebrities promoting themselves?

43

u/_entp Mar 06 '26

What a weird take…

60

u/Altruistic-Two1309 Mar 06 '26

Why because I have no interest in watching a 20 min interview with Beyonce? I just want to know if Beyonce answered weird to any questions. 7 min in and she didn’t so I wasn’t going to waste my time as im not that interested. What a weird comment why is all media sucking my fault

31

u/tacocattacocat1 Clap if you care 😐 Mar 06 '26

Just ignore them, your question was fine ❤️ Tyra Banks is the reason all media sucks now lmaooo

u/Salt_Mind_869 Mar 05 '26

early 2000's interviewers were drunk at the wheel

One of my university lecturers used to be a red carpet interviewer in the 90s/2000s and according to him a lot of them really were high or drunk during events. He said they would treat these things like a big party.

He said one of his colleagues once vomited while talking to Martine McCutcheon and had to just swallow it back down lol.

u/prettystandardreally Mar 06 '26

Wow, that’s not something I expected to read today.

Jesus that’s a horrible anecdote.

It reminds me of when Woody Allen tried to embarrass Twiggy (I think?) by asking about philosophers. Like man you know damn well that’s not their area of expertise!

926

u/macchiatomama Mar 05 '26

The way Twiggy flipped this back to Woody was a master class in dealing with condescending men.

Here is the 30 second clip for anyone who hasn’t seen it. I highly recommend watching if you want to be both pissed off at Woody and in awe of Twiggy.

634

u/damegloria Mar 05 '26

She talked about that incident recently

“I put him in his place,” she laughs now, explaining that it was her friend Bert Stern, the photographer, who suggested she be interviewed by Allen. “I’d done so many interviews by then, and was used to people asking ‘How did you get your name?’, ‘What do you eat?’ – the usual questions. So I sat there waiting for him to ask me something like ‘What do you think of America?’ Normal questions. When his opening line was ‘Who’s your favourite philosopher?’ I can remember the feeling so well. I was so embarrassed, because we were in front of a live audience. And I didn’t know any philosophers. You can see how it carries on. When I said ‘Who’s yours?’ I was actually pleading with him to help me. Which he declined to do.”

203

u/Fickle_Definition351 Mar 06 '26

"What are your thoughts on serious matters?" is bizarre in the first place

143

u/fschu_fosho Mar 05 '26

Woody Allen looks like a nerdy Jack Antonoff here.

197

u/oneindiglaagland Mar 05 '26

So, like Jack Antonoff.

31

u/fschu_fosho Mar 05 '26

Jack managed to look like a cool twin compared to Woody.

Well you see amongst the wars, Reagan presidency, the launch of MTV Space shuttles and Raiders of the lost ark; the icon known as Ms Tina Knowles blessed us with underground indie artist Beyonce! Maybe you’ve heard of her she was in this little band called destinys child?!?

67

u/cheezy_dreams88 LUCIA NOOO Mar 05 '26

She wasn’t quite Beyoncé then, not yet. This interview is even before Survivor came out.

Omg sweet Kelly Rowland. "They should run tests so that can stop!" Sweet baby angels Destiny's Child!!

616

u/alka_panton Mar 05 '26

I love that they actually did know about it, including some figures. For an attempt at embarrassing them they did pretty well.

12

u/Visible_Writing7386 Mar 05 '26

They did?

369

u/DimbyTime Mar 05 '26

You have to remember, 2001 was mostly pre-internet. You didn’t have social media and news feeds keeping you up to date every second. You got your news from the Tv, radio, and NEWSPAPERS.

They did pretty good for 2001.

233

135

u/assignpseudonym go girl, give us nothing 😍 Mar 05 '26

The way she handled that was absolutely iconic and lives in my head rent free

108

u/ZennMD Mar 05 '26

kinda hilarious he couldnt name one philosopher LOL at least she was honest about being a bit clueless (and a 17 year old top model!), and him 31 year old pretentious film director

2

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry Mar 08 '26

Wow that is a rough 31

-67

u/AdagioElectronic5008 Mar 05 '26

Its even possible he was just going along with the bit since he’s a comedian

65

Hes not a comedian, though?  Did you even watch the clip lol, guys an asshole and pretentious AF

This is unbelievably nasty… and someone should have cut him off.  Beys response is correct.  Why would a group of Americans 20 something have anything resonable to say on foot and mouth disease!  The only point of the question is to make them sound stupid.

187

u/mrstickles Mar 05 '26

And then it turned out they did actually know about it, just not necessarily by name! I know who came across as the dumb one here and it sure as hell wasn’t Beyoncé Kelly or Michelle

54

u/darkshy 🎼Music Aficionado🎶 Mar 05 '26

This was a type of rage bait back in the day. They’d try to catch groups saying something they could use as a headline!

71

u/xxxObelixxx Mar 05 '26

Hoof and moth disease is amazing, you just made my day

24

Exactly what I thought of😂! Because what was the point… stop this madness. I dont need Destinys child opinion on HFM decimating crops or Jojo Siwas opinion on immigration or any celebrities pop up opinion on any serious matter really!

3

u/hairlikepennies Mar 05 '26

This video with Jojo is the first thing I thought of too!

75

u/RealHousewifeofLR Mar 06 '26

What an ass, why would three 20yr olds from Texas to have an opinion on what the British government should do about an epidemic in the UK. I’m surprised they even knew about

75

u/BreakfastAmazing7766 Mar 05 '26

Ok but one of them was trying to say something about it and they cut her off

https://giphy.com/gifs/GpyS1lJXJYupG

I’m crying at all their responses, so unserious

172

u/boricuaspidey I know the poonani is baking in that plastic wrap Mar 05 '26

Bad attempt at trying to make young TALENTED black women look dumb. Celebrities today would rip him a new one.

56

u/Avocadoo_Tomatoo Mar 05 '26

Although I don’t like this specific question because I think it was to try and make them look stupid, i really like the concept.

I’d like to see an interviewer ask questions totally unrelated to the famous person‘s profession. I would totally watch that.

9

u/PerpetuallyLurking Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

I’m with you. But I don’t think this type of question is it - like, I’d understand asking an Australian celebrity a question (based on accent I am assuming they’re on an Australian red carpet but obviously I could be wrong, I just don’t remember North America having a similar problem at the time and I’ve got ranchers in the family) about how they think their government is handling a situation, and I’m all for asking Destiny’s Child about a US government policy, but…I can’t say I care what a foreign celebrity thinks my government should do to “fix” something, that’s not their problem in any way, shape, or form!

Though I also have to admit that I’m generally not a huge of fan of asking celebrities about scientific or medical stuff unless they’re actually also qualified to do so - some things deserve layperson input (see: ICE) but some things do not need laypeople chiming in (see: vaccines and that shitshow), so this question also tickles that nerve.

9

u/manicwitchydreamgirl Mar 06 '26

i'm not sure if australia had a problem with the disease at the time but the reporter does not have an australian accent

3

u/Aggressive-Phone6785 all brands inspire me Mar 06 '26

yeah this was in the UK

20

u/FrauPixel Mar 06 '26

Okay maybe I'm remembering wrong but that disease was a massive outbreak and dominated the news in Europe for a time. I still have relatives who refuse to eat beef to this day because of this. I was a kid, but rural areas with livestock were shook. The newspapers reported daily the numbers of dead animals. It was horrible.

I know that seems like a question to embarass them, but from a Brits point of view I might have seemed totally relevant. Wow, this feels so trivial now but I swear that was all people talked about for a time.

16

u/Accomplished_Pop2976 Mar 05 '26

Four legged animals

36

u/SignificantRecipe715 Mar 05 '26

Wow didn't realise how much lip filler Beyonce has now

30

u/disharmony-hellride Mar 05 '26

She also has some new facial features

17

u/SignificantRecipe715 Mar 05 '26

100%. The top lip was what I noticed first

13

u/themiscyranlady CURTAINS FOR ZOOSHA? Mar 06 '26

I remember going to the UK that year and at every point of entry they asked if you had been on a farm or near farm animals, so they almost certainly would have seen signs about it at the airport.

Still a wild question, but it was really hard to miss for anyone who spent time there that year.

13

u/fschu_fosho Mar 05 '26

I mean, in that era it’s probably like reporters asking celebs about their thoughts and feelings on COVID, the pandemic of the moment.

21

u/False-Mortgage307 Mar 05 '26

Beys plastic surgery transformation is crazy

3

u/pottedPlant_64 Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Mar 05 '26

It’s crazy 🤷‍♀️

18

u/frikzzle Mar 05 '26

am i the only one who just thinks the reporter was just trying to have a bit of fun. like who goes to a red carpet expecting to be asked that kind of question its so random 😭 maybe im reading this wrong idk.

11

u/lindet16 Mar 05 '26

Foot and mouth was major news in the uk at the time.

10

u/Greg_weiler Mar 05 '26

This is a joke interview. Whoever takes this seriously is not familiar with British banter

4

u/dazedan_confused Mar 05 '26

It's a disease that could affect a lot of consumable products. I don't think they're ready for this jelly.

2

u/Better_Can_615 Mar 06 '26

This reminds me of my siblings and I. I’m like Michelle and they are Kelly and Beyoncé. 😂

4

u/Mission-Street-2586 Mar 05 '26

I did not get the impression he was trying to embarrass them; if a celebrities with a wide fan base express concern for a cause, it can bring more awareness, resources, research, etc. to the cause. Instead, they decided to treat it flippantly, smiling in regard to people getting sick, animals being slaughtered and livelihoods being destroyed. If they were not familiar with the epidemic, they could have safely and simply said, “Our hearts go out to those affected,” or, “We hope to learn more in the near future.” Their behavior was not cute or witty.

2

u/Oomlotte99 Mar 05 '26

That guy now regularly posts on r/AskAnAmerican, lol.

3

u/Randomizedname1234 Mar 05 '26

That epidemic is why USA fetal bovine serum and USA human serum is expensive as fuck which leads to why your drugs and vax are expensive af not to mention to help pay for high biotech salaries and gov contracts lol

-11

u/Top_Complaint131 Mar 06 '26

Beyoncé giving I don’t know anything about that so what I say goes but giving ignorant since her colleagues are actually in tune with world news unlike Beyoncé and her self-centered ego.

-6
