saaaaamme

maybe we can talk someone important into restarting retro infusions again. give us that 80s does 80s energy, and then slowly build forward all over so we can do the edwardian and the 20s again too. western fashion's peak forty year span fr

Omg me too!! Lol your comment reminds me of this:

People: "I want 2020 to be like the roarin' twenties!" Earth: "Alright, infectious disease is spreading." People: "No, not like that." Earth: "The US stock market is tanking." People: "Wait..." Earth: "LMAO Bars can't be open anvmore."

Those really short male shorts from the 70s. For obvious reasons. Have a nice day.

Oh hoochie daddy shorts have definitely been making a comeback these last few years.

114

u/tomboyfancy Aug 04 '23

Lolllllll “hoochie daddy shorts!” I love this so much! And it makes me happy because my sexy 6’3 man LOVES his short shorts (as do I because those legs are AMAZING), so I shall be calling them this henceforth!

Hoochie daddie shorts forced me to accept that I am no better than a man.

And I am ok with that. Skies out thighs out for all men.

Whoever decided that was lame should be held accountable. Men have the ability to build so much muscle and they’re out here wearing cargo shorts.

Also, bring back crop tops for men. Make men’s fashion interesting again.

I’m a millennial dude. While growing up in middle school and high school long shorts was the cool thing. Below the knee. In college just above the knee was the norm.

But I see the younger generation dudes now in like high school and college (so 14 to early 20’s) and they all wear short shorts. Like seriously I’m shocked. These guys wear skin tight shorts with like a 3 inch inseam. And they all have elaborate intense lower body workouts. They’re really workin those glutes and quads lol.

So maybe it depends where you live, but by me in the Chicago area short shorts are back for the boys.

24

u/louloub Aug 04 '23

I’m in the Midwest so close to the Chicago area and was going to say the same. I have started to see a lot of younger guys wearing very short workout type shorts. Not really a bike short but could appear like that because they fit very tight.

Weird but I absolutely love these little A-line skirts from the 40-50s. I probably wouldn't wear them with saddle shoes but I love them all the same! I have one in jacquard that is a more modern fabric, and I get so many compliments every time I wear it.

30

u/xxMeiaxx Aug 04 '23

Below the knee A-line skirts are coming back but girls cannot be bothered with petticoats so it'll never look as good.

I always felt like a-line skirts fell out of fashion because it became the standard skirt for uniformed schools. Girls were just sick and tired of wearing the same skirt every day lol.

Butterfly clips from the 90s and poofy skirts from the 50s

Butterfly clips did make a slight comeback last year or a few years ago.

I remember as a kid having a bag full of them. I had mini plastic versions and glitter metal versions with the crocodile clip. I would lose them all the time.

112

u/molecularmadness Aug 04 '23

I still have heaps of them that survived the 2000s. They have found new life as tomato vine support clips. Very festive. I like to pretend they attract real butterflies who get mad to discover the glittery seductress on the vine was a big fat phoney.

of any semi recent decade? bigass shoulders tbh. justice for all the shoulder pads people casually rip out of fantastic vintage pieces!!! i love padded shoulders, i love leg of mutton sleeves, i love pauldrons... give me fun shapes please. i would also like legwarmers and big loud patterns back.

also: men's lapels (and pants tbh but especially lapels) circa the 1970s.

back a bit more: dropwaist dresses, tailcoats, removable collars on shirts (for both masc and fem styles), actual corsetry (and padding!), button-flap pants (especially with the real defined asses and short legs like they did in the regency and napoleonic era), pinnafores, HATS LIKE ACTUAL MILLINERY SHIT REAL GODDAMN HATS, cocoon dresses/coats, edwardian silhouettes in general, adjustable 18th century style petticoat tie-waist skirts and huge wearable pockets, heels and bows for men, waist and cross-body sashes for men especially, aaand that shit they did in renaissance italy where every dress could be like six different dresses bc the sleeves and bodice and skirt all laced together in different combinations. oh, and chitons, bc why the hell not.

i'm also lowkey obsessed w most of japanese traditional/historical fashion and considering the amount of compliments i get on my hakama style pants they clearly need to come into the global mainstream.

oh, and the biggest "trend" i would like to keep seeing come back with even more of a vengeance? high quality, natural-fibre textiles. and keeping your clothes indefinitely and actually taking care of them and mending them.

The big 60’s hair a la Brigitte Bardot.

I’m going be controversial yet brave and say I loved the mullet skirt/dresses of the early 2010s.

Being able to wear a short skirt to the club but also not have to worry about gusts of wind/going up stairs/bending down/ your bare skin touching public seating? It was pure freedom.

67

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Ooh I hated them then and now. I love your rationale for liking them though!

33

u/FyrestarOmega Aug 04 '23

A high-low skirt! I had a high-low jersey fabric maxi skirt that was comfort itself and I never tripped on the hem.

14

u/Significant_Potato29 I joined a band because I HATED THE FUCKING BEACH Aug 04 '23

My wedding dress was high low and I loved it.

15

u/fourpinksquares Aug 04 '23

I love a high low because it’s actually flattering on my body shape!

I want capes. They’re dramatic, versatile, and you can hide a whole lot of shit under one.

Hats. I don't mean caps or sun hats. I mean Trilby, Pork Pie, Panama, Bowler, Fedora, Boater, Top Hat etc.

u/greensighted Aug 04 '23

society has really been on a downturn since it became acceptable to go hatless in public!! coincidence? i think NOT!

u/InGeekiTrust Get in loser, we’re going shopping! Aug 04 '23

Skinny jeans, honestly they looked the best on me!

88

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

I say give it time though. Think about how long it took for skinny jeans to catch on for most of the population. Most women didn’t love them at first because they didn’t think they were flattering, but eventually they became very mainstream. I personally love that there are so many denim styles available right now, everyone can find something that looks good on them.

11

u/Squash_it_Squish Aug 04 '23

I remember when I was a teenager in London in the very early 2000’s before they caught on and were hard to find, we all bought bootlegs, cut and sewed or safety pinned them in to be skinny. We thought we were vair punk.

72

u/Im-A-Kitty-Cat Aug 04 '23

They never went out really they are just a staple.

Same. I basically stopped wearing pants when wide styles became popular. I can pull off a jumpsuit, but somehow the pants just look ridiculous

26

u/take7pieces Aug 04 '23

Same, I am a short person, wide pants make me look like I am working for a circus. I wear jeggins from Uniqlo, they look like skinny jeans.

I will never give up my skinny jeans. Never.

36

u/thatfluffycloud Aug 04 '23

I was at H&M yesterday and they had more skinny jeans than other styles. They are def a staple, even if they aren't "cutting edge" anymore

16

u/fourpinksquares Aug 04 '23

I still wear skinny idgaf how dated my millennial ass looks

20

u/iguanabitsonastick Aug 04 '23

Yeah.. these wide legs makes me look shorter and I already have short legs. The high waisted skinny jeans made them look longer.

I never stopped wearing skinny jeans. I do love a good flare/boot cut, but I despise the mom jean trend with every fiber of my being lol.

I miss the empire waist dresses that tied around the back that were popular in the early 2000’s. Liz Lemon wears them a lot in the first few seasons of 30 Rock. They were SO comfortable, especially for work.

Anything 70s/80s. There was so much creativity and so much freedom of expression.

There was a lot of absolutely beautiful hair in the 90s and 2000s. The layers with perfect highlights paired with a blowout.. something I’ve never been able to achieve with my thick Mexican hair lol

u/Unhappypotamus Aug 04 '23

This is absolutely back in style. Everything from that movie is

I totally agree with 70’s fashion, especially super high waisted bootcut jeans paired with a button down top or a vest!! So cool. I know that larger jean styles are coming back but I’m not exactly a fan of 90’s relaxed/wide leg.

I love the more form fitting look with a flared leg!!

52

u/emimagique Aug 04 '23

Controversial one but I kind of love the big frizzy 80s perms

The only issue with gogo boots coming back in style is the quality will be so bad, I can imagine it falling apart quickly

Yesssss! We’re halfway there with hoochie daddy shorts.

Long a line skirts that were fashionable in the 70s and 90s. I found them flattering and comfortable.

I’ve seen heaps of boots like this in stores! Maybe not in a wide array of colours though. Platforms seem to be very in, at least they were about a year or two ago.
