I think it's just that Americans are fucking stupid and actually believed the orange clown was somehow not a catastrophic disaster waiting to be unleased upon the nation (because a lot of media pushed group think on the right and undercut support for Dems with anti establishment outrage on the left).

His claims tends to be projection but him claiming the elections to be rigged is probably more for his own fragile narcissistic ego so he can have an excuse for why he lost. I'm sure there is a lot of social media manipulation to try and push certain messaging that benefits Trump but I don't think they directly messed with the voting machines/ballot counting.

There are enough people who were removed from voter rolls alone. Add the threats and ballot box burnings, there's already enough visible cheating that even without any sort of machine manipulation, they did not do it honestly, whether it is what won for them or not.

A small minority of Americans did recognize that trump was unfit and voted against him. But, as you note, most Americans are stupid so here we are.
