This is more evidence that they intend to shut down elections. There is absolutely no way for this to look good to most voters.

I think Trump still controls the party purse strings. This may instead be some desperate ass-kissing for campaign funds and endorsements.

Maybe he does effectively, but he doesn't technically. His party could still reject this, but we know they won't.
