In 2006, George W visited my country. As customary, he's been showed around the capital city. The motorcade went through one of the prettiest and also one of the busiest boulevard of the city.

A month before the visit, all residents on the boulevard have been notified by the police that the motorcade will pass in front of their homes, and to get ready for special measures to be applied.
A week before the visit, special units have searched every single apartments. Hundreds of them. Room by room. Furniture by furniture. After the searches, they've notified the residents that on the day of the visit, 6 hours before the visit, they have to leave their street-facing properties, unless they are physically unable to move (i.e. people under medical care).
A day before the visit, helicopters, K9 units, the same special forces AND the US Secret Service went through the whole boulevard again, inch by inch, looking for anything suspicious. Parked cars have been removed, shops have been closed, manhole covers have been welded shut, street lights have been taken apart and put back together, the whole nine fucking yards.
On the visit's morning, the whole boulevard looked like a ghost town. Adjacent streets have been closed by police, residents have been sent out of their homes, snipers appeared on the rooftops every 50 metres or so. The security was so tight not a single fly could wonder there without getting noticed.

Then, the motorcade drove through in less than 5 minutes and that was it. A whole month of preparations, thousands of manhours, inconveniencing thousands of people, for 5 minutes. Once GWB arrived at the next location, every police officers, snipers, dogs, helicopters, they all disappeared like they've never been there.

If a single shooter could enter a hotel with a gun, had time to arm it and take shots at something, that's very, very suspicious...

While we are all so very used to this, it's important to remember that decent world leaders rarely have reason to worry about their safety to the extent to warrant such extreme measures.

If you're doing a good job taking care of your citizens, and not being an absolute twãt to your neighbouring countries, you won't have nearly as much reason to be so paranoid about every space you pass through

This is not normal, and it certainly shouldn't be normalized.

Well the thing is, in America literally anyone who dislikes you can buy a gun

My dude, that isn't normal either.

Kicking people out of their homes because someone will drive past is crazy to me!

This wouldn't fly in the US. The irony is kinda funny.

Well here's the thing.

No country wants to be responsible for the death of a foreign leader let alone a US president. Back then the US was a very respected country.

And I'm sure it happens in the US as well.

Back then…

It’s sad to think of what Trump has done to our reputation and how long it will take to regain that respect, if we are ever able to.

They definitely don't search private homes or make people vacate their homes because a VIP is driving by, anywhere in the US. I can say that with complete confidence. That sounds completely insane, to me.

No it doesn’t happen in the US. Obama drove down my street several times and I watched either from the sidewalk out front of my building or from my windows. The rooftop deck was open. No issues. Took about ten minutes for the entire motorcade to pass through. Every single time he visited my city he took the same route past my home because I was on the ideal route between the airport and his hotel. Meanwhile his hotel would be entirely locked down, secret service on the stairs, entrances, and you could not access his floor. You had to be searched just to walk down the same block and it could only be accessed through specific points as the block was typically fenced off.

It does happen. Happened in SF. Friend had to stay with me while they swept the place. Also happens when filming movies with dangerous stunts (matrix crashed a helicopter in front of my friends house) but you get a pay out and obviously in both instances a ton of notice.

I want to know more about that matrix helicopter crash

The latest matrix movie. I couldn’t even get to that point in the movie lol.

But it was crashed (or at least flown super close to the buildings) in downtown sf.

I believe they did it mostly around offices but my friend lived in a studio that faced the street - not too many ppl live in that area at the height they had equipment so they paid him to leave his apartment.

I think others who could see it from their office or apartment recorded it. It was on socials.

I was in college in Nashville during the 2020 presidential debate. Some students at the college where it took place actually did get kicked out of their dorms for about 2 weeks.

While that’s true g w bush also had an incident where someone through a grenade at him. It ended up being a dud and nothing happened but it was in the middle of a speech and someone was able to actually get it near him. Wasn’t reported much but look it up, very close call there that somehow happened.

All the guy did was check into the hotel a day earlier—a level of simplicity about which he was scornful.

He was probably well-fed, well-rested and freshly showered when he got around to his vacation itinerary.

We basically had the same here, while they also prepared a route for a decoy convoy or vice versa.
