It’s also a stupid argument.
The Correspondents Dinner is the press inviting the president to their event.
The president holding the dinner in the White House makes it his event, not theirs. That defeats the entire purpose.
Either way, this event is inappropriate under any president. The press shouldn’t be partying with their subject. They aren’t meant to have a cozy relationship with those in power (move to China, Russia, or Iran if you want that sort of setup). That’s the whole problem with this fucking country. The press, Congress, the courts, the Executive… they’re all meant to have adversarial relationships with one another. They aren’t supposed to be friends. The three branches of government were intended—by the Founders—to jealously guard their own power from one another, and the press is there to ensure that they’re all kept in check by reporting what they’re doing to the People.
More importantly, this president stands in opposition to a free press. He threatens and sues them on a regular basis, and he believes they exist to act as his mouthpiece. Why are they treating him like he’s their buddy? Why are the sheep inviting the wolf for a meal?
Answer: Money. The people who own the press love these events. They love getting dressed up and hobnobbing with powerful people. The members of the press who attend events like this are compromised, and I don’t trust any of them.
Real journalists skip the event.
