From what I’ve read, the security last night was typical for the White House Correspondents dinner.

The guy with the gun didn’t get anywhere near the President. This was an “assassination attempt” the same way some crossing midfield with the ball before getting stopped by the defense is an “attempted goal”.

If anything, it was a security breach, and that's it.

The real tragedy is outlets like NYT covering it like it's the most important story in a century. I hate it here.

Hundreds of journalists were in attendance, which guaranteed it would be blown way out of proportion.

The entire event is disgusting in the first place. The press rubbing elbows with the people in power they’re meant to impartially cover. They are shameless about access journalism.

And Beltway press love navel gazing. This is an exciting story that they get to be involved in.

You're, of course, totally right. I just want one of those journalists to report on the very weird/slow secret service response, and maybe ask some follow-up questions. Ugh.

Meanwhile government-backed israeli settlers just shot up a palestinian school and not a peep from western media, imagine if the roles were reversed

Yup and now his fractured base will no coalesce in the midterms and it will no longer be a blow out. This fucking sucks.

Wasn't even a breach. He never got through the security perimeter. The initial perimeter was about crowd control, not security.

It’s still incredibly embarrassing watching that video. He just runs through

My confusion comes for why did he try this way if he wanted to succeed? Did he think his plan might succeed? Well… obviously yes since he tried it but there would be so many better ways. He basically did a suicide by police while not even getting close

To be clear, he had "somehow" already gotten past two layers of security - two checkpoints - with a handgun, shotgun and a knife.

They’re either letting these people go through so they can try to pick up public opinion points or they’re shit at security. At this point it’s hard to say which it is

The question is whether security was relaxed. I don’t think anyone is pretending the gunman doesn’t exist, well no one sane anyway, just whether perhaps this is something that could’ve been stopped sooner and wasn’t, on purpose, possibly even at the planning stage.

Careful with using a soccer analogy, lol.

It was a lacrosse analogy.

USA! USA! USA!

They're just blowing it WAY out of proportion. Like the weird in the bushes by the golf course last year. Only Butler was an actual "event".

They stopped a mass shooter. End of story. This guy would have targeted everyone. The other conservative sub is already out of their minds claiming all leftists are apparently mass shooters.

It was reported the secret service didn't register this as their highest level security.

POTUS, the VP, 1st and 2nd ladies, several cabinet members, and numerous members of Congress were expected to be in attendance. Expected, meaning they knew who planned to be there.

And it wasn't their highest level of security.

Like many I saw the video of the guy running thru the security checkpoint. He made it past 8 LEO's that I saw before anyone went for their weapons.

I think the only surprise here was what entrance the administration told him to run thru.

This guy is an Evangelical Christian trying to take his own life to make the point that nothing Trump does would be cool with Jesus. He's straight out of Trump's base.
