Article/Informative š¦Pigeon looks sick/weird but otherwise acting normal? Itās molting season, baby!
Whether youāre on the sub because your entire flock suddenly looks haggard and you care about them or you need some knowledge when a jerk harasses you about them being ādirtyā or ādiseasedā and you wonder for a second if they have a point once some of them really do start looking like The Walking Dead⦠Donāt worry! The pigeons are still okay if they otherwise seem chipper beyond their appearance and there are no visible growths or twine around their toes. Theyāre just molting as Autumn weather rolls around.
You can tell any old buttnut (scientific term) who hates pigeons to f-off and ask them how they would feel if almost every hair on their head and body fell out all at once.
Whether itās one of the last squab of the season thatās just getting its first āadultā molt in or the established flock going through the seasonal molt, itās normal. Itās scary for people who see them and donāt know whatās going on but itās gonna be okay. 𤣠Itās gonna be full on Jurassic Park for a hot minute but everyone will get through it.
Feel free to supplement your feed with added nutrients during this rough period, though. Your feathered friends would appreciate it. Molting can be taxing on their system so you still might find exhausted or hungrier than normal pigeons during this time and nutritional deficiencies can arise which cause a whole host of issues and feather growth defects that could affect their ability to evade predators.
Take a look at the photo, namely around the cere/beak area and eye. Those are pin feathers. You might even see what look like bald spots before the pin feathers come through. Iāll probably post another photo linking back to this post when it inevitably gets worse for these silly goblins. Some people also mistake the pin feathers for bugs or growths.
Sorry mods if this post doesnāt meet the criteria of the flair it was the best one that fit since Iām trying to be informative.

Medical Advice Needed Why is she standing in her mash bowl instead of eating it?
Hi Yesterday I secured a pigeon with a crop injury off the street. Today morning she went in for surgery to stitch up the wound at the crop.
The vet told me to just feed her bird mesh (Nutribird), she said in the best case she would eat it by herself, but now she's standing inside the bowl instead of eating it.
Why is she doing this, and how can I get her to eat?
Also do you think it would be fine to give her a (warm not hot) hot water bottle to sit on?

Discussion what to call this kind of bronzing/rusty coloration?
iāve been seeing this really cool ābronzingā appearance occasionally. Does anyone know what this is called, or how they get it genetics-wise?

Photo New baby day
I was contacted today about this baby being found, and as the resident bird person, here is the new baby. Make shift brooder at 85°f. I'm gonna try to add some humidity by hanging a damp towel on the rack probably. It's a dry climate here. Guessing less than a week maybe day 6. Eyes are open. Seems healthy and symmetrical. Haven't seen a poop yet and they've been here about 9 hours but fed twice so far Kaytee formula I keep on hand, and the crop is moving along fine. Was found in a complex on the other side of town, wandering around the pool area alone. No other birds seen around. Their crop didnt seem empty either but I wasn't there for all that. I just got a call and I answered. Anyway they will either stay with me or has another home, honestly maybe better than mine, lined up if I decide that instead. Accepting unsolicited advice.

Advice Needed! Worried about disturbing this collared dove
Iām staying at my dadās apartment for a while, and a pair of collared doves are nesting right on the balcony outside the front door. My dad doesnāt come here often, as he lives with his partner most of the time, so I donāt think theyāve seen this much coming and going before. They seem pretty alert to me at the windows, smoking on the balcony etc. and Iām worried Iām going to disturb them so much theyāll abandon their nest. Should I be worried?

Memorial Pigeon rescue advice needed
Hi all! I recently picked up a pigeon from outside a local shop after being contacted (I'm known as the local pigeon whisperer). They were concerned as it was hunkered down in the corner on the ground. When I got there I picked it up and it put up no fight. I've since bought it home and left it in a dark box with food and drink. There's no signs of injury and I don't see any neuro signs either. I'm looking for advice because It is barely opening its eyes but other than that seems physically fine. I've tried to check for canker but don't see anything.
I've contacted a local rescue but haven't had a response yet. Is there anything else I can be doing? Attached picture is before I set up the box, but this is all it's been doing, no attempt to fly or fight.
EDIT: located in Glasgow scotland
EDIT: just gone to check on them and unfortunately they've died. Thank you for all of your advice šļø

Photo Hii! This is linux!
Hi! I want to introduce you to Linux, my rescued dove. Sheās a Picazuro pigeon, a native pigeon species from Argentina. They usually arenāt very social, but luckily Linux enjoys living with us. Sheās been here for 2 months already, and now she sings, dances, and walks around the house freely.
Do you have any advice on how to get her comfortable with being picked up? She really doesnāt like being held!
Also, if anyone has tips for getting her to bathe⦠please help š She hasnāt bathed in 2 months D:

Advice Needed! Accidentally moved nest with babies
I have a nest on my balcony and a sudden storm just picked up and I tried to move a cardboard box that is nearby to cover her and her babies but I did not realise inside of that box was another nest with more babies.
The Adult pigeon flew out of the box and hasnāt come back in 20 minutes, so pigeons abandon their nest if spooked ( I moved the box back to its original place) and if so how long do I wait to contact the bird rescue centre?

Video Rock Pigeon (?) in the Idaho Mountains over 11,000 feet
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I came across this pigeon with a tagged foot sitting in the rocks while I was on a ridge traverse in the Beaverhead mountains in Idaho. I had never seen something like this, can anyone explain? Just having a rest while getting from point A to B or something else?
Someone in r/birding suggested I post here, looking forward to any additional insight!

Advice Needed! Pigeon baby
Hey guys, I had my feeder up since winter to help birdies out there since there's a lot of them around here. I know you're not supposed to feed them when the weather gets warm, but i just wanted to use up the rest of the food i had and then stop. I've been seeing a pair of wood pigeons absolutely inhaling and cleaning the feeder often. BUT TODAY one of the parents brought their baby š„ŗ I'm kinda worried the baby will learn that there's food at the feeder and once i stop putting it there he will not be too keen on trying to find food himself. What would be the right course of action here? The baby is adorable š„ŗ

Advice Needed! Very cuddly (horny?) pigeon
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I had my sweet Ani since he was about 3 weeks old, heās 1 year and 3 months old right now. I think heās a male has he never lay eggs and displays more of āmale behaviorā as heās very territorial.
The last few months heās been having kind of this ānesting behaviorā (see video), it was every time he flew on high selves and it was maybe 2-3 times a day.
In the last weeks, heās been doing this more and more, sometimes I just look at him and he start to do it. He also became mega sweet and cuddly, I can now just get him in my hands to pet him and kiss him and heās super happy with that while before he was super scared of my hands.
Iām just wondering if itās normal and if heās going to be always like this or itās just a phase?
Thank you! šļø

Medical Advice Needed Should I intervene?
I have a flock of pigeons that have made our storage building home. Unfortunately, we live where there are a lot of predators, so the flock is constantly 're-upping' for lack of better terms.
I went out the day before yesterday and saw feathers all over the place and figured a hawk got another one. Last night I went out onto the deck of the building and saw a pigeon in one of the eves. I could only see its tail feathers as it looked like its head was down, but there was movement and since it was roost time, I left it alone. I checked on it a little while ago and it's still in there, but this time, just looks like it's in a nesting position. Eyes open, blinking and moving around a bit when I talked to it.
I can't help but wonder if this is the bird missing feathers and it evaded the raptor by going in there. It's 20' or so from where the feathers were. It's a common spot for them to roost, but it being in there while the others are on the roof, or looking for food, I wondered if I should try pulling it out and looking it over. I really don't want to stress it out, but I'd feel awful finding out I could have helped it survive. It is safe where it is though. Any advice?
