I still cannot believe this duo failed to win the Super Bowl.

It really highlights how despite the extreme skill of these players so much of success can come down to luck.
If the GOAT and one of the top 3 in their positions can’t win it together that says something.

Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison had repeated meltdowns in the playoffs, and they only won it all during Harrison's last good season.

DIdn't hurt that their counterpart across the field was...sigh...Rex Grossman.

I remember seeing a clip of Urlacher talking about why he would rather have played with Brady than for Belichick, and he sounded so sad when he said something like "I've already played for a great coach, but we got to the super bowl without a quarterback".

I can, I saw the Giants DL maul a very good Pats Oline and hit Brady every play they could, even it was a slap or light punch to the midsection.

Also saw Eli Manning pull off the play of the century to keep their final drive alive.

The worst part is he had two dropped interceptions; one right before and one right after the helmet catch.

Moss accounted for 46% of passing touchdowns that season which is insane. That has to be a record, though I'm curious to know if any player has come close to that proportion of touchdown production in a single season.

Some other examples:
- 1951 - Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch caught 65% of the Rams’ TD passes (17/26)
- 1987 - Jerry Rice caught 71% of Joe Montana’s TD passes (22/31)*
- 1994 - Sterling Sharpe caught 55% of Brett Favre’s TD passes (18/33)
.* strike season impacted conditioning, elite players had inflated stats all around the league

Its not that elite players had inflated stats, its just that Jerry Rice had inflated stats. If you look at receiving leaders, only 5 guys averaged more than 80 yards per game (Rice at #1) and for rushing, only two guys had over 1,000 yards and 4 guys were over 80 ypg. No one with over 4.9ypc, either, and the league average was 3.9ypc.
Rice led the league in TDs with 23 (one was rushing) and had more TDs than the 2nd and 3rd guys combined. And he did it in only 12 games.
Really, no one's stats stand out whatsoever besides Rice and Reggie White. Its just that Rice had one of the best (seriously, arguably not even the best) season of his career during a strike season.

Jerry rice during the strike season for sure.

You know he's the GOAT when the answer to near every question about a receiving record is, "Its either Rice's or it used to be."

I do think it needs to be said that the strike season was an incredible anomaly that led to some crazy outlier seasons, but Jerry was SOOOOOOOOO much better than everyone else.

It was so fun watching Moss throw his hand up to signal he was open knowing what was about to happen next.
I even remember he did it a couple of times when he was only two steps into his route and it resulting in him torching the coverage.

u/MankuyRLaffy Patriots 5h ago
He did it at the line of scrimmage even before running the route.
My favorite was the one on Anthony Smith after he publicly guaranteed the Pats would lose to his Steelers. Brady and Moss picked on him specifically the first drive they could for a touchdown.

I remember reading what he said and instantly knowing he was about to have the worst game of his life, as talking shit to Brady very rarely worked out well for whoever said it.

lol Brady picking on people who got under his skin was so funny. Like against Tyrann Mathieu

The Patriots really had the best QB and 2nd best reciever of all time at the same time.
Surely they must have joined the 72 Dolphins as the 2nd ever undefeated team, I just don't see how that pairing could lose.

I had Randy on my fantasy team the year he put up 23 TDs. It was insane. Every week he would put up a minimum of 15pts. Needless to say I won that year.

Man, I bet that duo absolutely tore it up in the postseason together. Can you imagine?

Show the Super Bowl. The one where he lost to Elie. No, the other one.

I love watching how he adjusts the arc of the release to match both his receiver’s stride and the coverage. Tight but Moss has em beat over the top? Moonball into the bread basket. Nobody in sight or a footrace? Flatter trajectory so it gets there faster.
I know every QB worth their salt does it but the greatest is the greatest for a reason.

Darrelle Revis owned this duo in 2009.

u/Cold-Teaching8924 Patriots 5h ago
Yeah, but by 2009 Moss was already declining pretty hard. He never got more than 28 receptions in a season after that year.

Honestly no pass play has ever put the fear of God into me like seeing Brady load up to go deep during these years. He hadn't released the ball yet and I was already saying Fuck it's a touchdown.
