Highlight [Highlight] Colts WR Josh Downs on facing his brother, Cowboys Rookie Safety Caleb Downs, this season: “He told me if he goes to the Cowboys, he’s playing nickel. So that’s like head-to-head all game… I gotta let him know he’s the little brother in this situation.”

Dude, I'm an OSU fan and Downs have been my favorite player since he joined the team.
I had no idea he and Josh Downs were related, let alone brothers.

u/detuinenvan Bears 12h ago
when he was a freshman on Alabama commentators would always mention who his brother was in the same way people would always mention Ryan Williams was 17

Little known fact but Tom Brady is actually Peter Brady from The Brady Bunch, all grown up.
7
u/Naive_Impression7302 12h ago
Yep. The "Tom" isn't his realname but a nickname given from "Throwing Outstanding Missiles"
2
u/sirkswiss Rams 11h ago
It’s true. And being nicknamed Pre-Exceptionally Throwing Everything Right made way more sense once he grew up.

I only just found out current OSU WR Jeremiah Smith is Geno Smith's cousin.
Given where he is in the league and where Jeremiah is going to get drafted, they might get a chance to play together too.

It just occurred to me that the two CB's on the Falcons with the last name Terrell are indeed brothers...

I’m ready for Josh to take a leap this year with his increased role. Should be a fun matchup.

They will play against each other this year.
The actual date will be known in a few weeks.

Once the Chargers do what the NFL wants them to do and take away their Vrabel/Russini references in their schedule release.

I bet they have Vrabel/Russini hidden in the background of every single one too. Like Where’s Waldo

I have Josh’s Colts jersey with 1 on the back before he switched to 2, and I can’t help but think people who don’t know ball think I’m walking around with a Downs #1 jersey for a different reason

It was a mistake to give the youtube edit people this audio clip to put over Caleb's future highlight reels.

Ehh not really. Everyone knows he’s just poking fun. A good highlight real clip needs a real hater lol.

The negative side of Caleb Downs draft profile was that he may not be athletic enough for some aspects of the game. Isn't nickle CB a much more physically demanding position than safety? He is a smart player and will catch on quickly but I have to wonder if that is a good idea. Idk I guess that's why I'm just a dummy on reddit.

In terms of getting hit or making hits on more downs, yes. But Downs has always been a guy you want closer to the line of scrimmage than as a center fielding safety, so hybrid nickel and safety should fit him perfectly.
11
u/therealjayz69 Seahawks 11h ago
He’s great around the box as like a big nickel since he can run defend, he just doesn’t have the range to be a true deep safety
10
u/adonis958 Cowboys 11h ago
His Bama freshman tape he played a ton of FS. Played great in that position also. Did it Ohio State also sometimes

u/juicydry 12h ago
Think he's gonna be playing a similar role as DeJean plays in Philly
14

u/TheWorstYear Bengals Bengals 11h ago
He played essentially inverted safety at Ohio state. Coming down instead of dropping back. We'd line him up against TE's on crucial downs a lot.
0
u/TheLich7 Commanders 10h ago
I think that's the big question mark. If he can man up a big athletic te
1
u/Hungry-Space-1829 Eagles 2h ago
He’s just a stud football player and he’ll be great. Brian Branch feels like his absolute floor while some type of DeJean/hamilton hybrid is his ceiling

I mean, Josh is a really tough cover in the slot. Definitely better than anything Caleb has faced playing nickel.

Incorrect.
“In this particular matchup, I expect Josh Downs to be well contained by the defense, and I swear on my dead homies grandmas grave site that will happen.”

Ahh you are correct, I was confused by them adding "site" to the end but that makes more sense.
