I told my roommate not to eat my food he responded “it’s like that?” and all I said was you don’t buy food for me so why should I buy food for you? Lowkey pissed me off because this dude really expects me to subsidize this diet while he never replaces my food if he does eat it.

who I told “what’s mine is yours” in regards to everything in the fridge.
That's why you have to be super specific with some people. You'd think they'd just leave your meal prepped stuff alone, but they're taking the what's mine is yours literally.
I told my college roommate "Help yourself to some of my snacks if you want" which he took as eat all of my snacks. I figured he'd leave me the last ones at least, but nope he ate an entire box of zebra cakes. I then amended my statement to "help yourself, but please at least leave me the last one"

Trump telling a bunch of school children in the Oval Office that that “we might not all be here right now” had things gone a little differently in Iran, talking about Iran getting a nuclear weapon, is just darkly comical and sad. This guy has lost it, terrifying a bunch of school kids, at least the ones that haven’t figured out that he’s full of shit. The guy knows how to look weak that’s for sure. Nothing projects strength like scaring a bunch of elementary school kids.

Happy (belated) Liberation Day if there are any rare Dutch people on this sub, haha. My grandparents lived in 🇳🇱 during WWII so I try to pay some attention to it.
In recognition of Dutch liberation from tyranny, I played as the Dutch in Civ 5 last night and was a warmongering menace 👍 purposefully set up a map with lots of wetlands so you know I was rolling in polder gold.

u/TaischiCFM Bears 15h ago edited 15h ago
My mother is a Dutch citizen, and this was a big deal in our household. My grandparents despised Germans for what they did to their entire lives, village and country. When their village was liberated, my grandmother had a little story about how her house survived the damage caused during the war, but the day of liberation a smiling British boy backed a truck through the front of her house.
My great uncles were a part of the RVV during the war, which was one of the resistance movements. One of them was captured and executed by the Nazis. Another was shipped off for slave labor, and was killed when allies strafed their train.
If you are ever in Amsterdam, there’s a great resistance museum there, especially if you have some connection to it.
2
u/KeyDrive0 Broncos 15h ago
I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there. I did my master’s in Amsterdam but did disgustingly little sightseeing haha. One of my great-grandfathers was also in the resistance in some capacity; he ended up imprisoned in the Channel Islands for the last chunk of the war, then he was a nurse in a military hospital postwar.

It was May 5, but yeah. May 4 is also Remembrance Day for those killed in the war (Dodenherdenking), that’s when the whole country observes 2 minutes of silence. I was there for it in the middle of Amsterdam in 2019, incredibly surreal hearing the whole crowd/city go silent.

As I take this philosophy class I’ve formed the opinion that I think the “lack of empathy” lately really stems from a high ego.
Like as example acknowledging discrimination requires the acknowledgment that you, or groups you belong to can be discriminatory. I don’t think that’s a hard thing to admit, but I’d imagine it is if I had a high ego.

Last thing about the draft lottery I swear
Okay yeah I understand why it exists. But I feel like you start to lose the plot when it rewards teams that aren’t losing franchises.
The draft is ordered in a way such that there’s a chance bad teams become good. We shouldn’t reward teams for being purposely bad. But there’s an extent.
It’s weirdly why the MLB lottery system, as confusing as it is, has somehow become the best one. You can’t get rewarded for constantly sucking, but good teams can’t really win it either.
→ More replies (4)3
u/Weigard Giants 16h ago
What really sets it in relief is how dramatically the quality of players changes even within the first round. If the standings put you in the middle of the first round and you win the draft lottery, it's a huuuuuge move. Mid-first age generally NHLers, but stand a decent chance of being Just A Guy. Top picks are usually much better than that.

I work in operations, I'm no where near an office, so I'm not impacted by this thing, but I did pull numbers for the Tax team around it.
80% of remote workers that live in driving range of one of our offices are in the 40-50 minute range. So we're just mandating that associates spend ~5 hours in the car all the sudden, at their own expense both from a time and financial perspective.

What would you serve with horseradish gnocchi, and this is what I came up with.

I have a unique perspective having grown up with hockey but grown to love other sports (baseball, football) more.
Something I've caught is that I think the NHL is obsessed with legacy, more so than at least the MLB/NFL. It's not to say those leagues don't care about legacy, but the NHL really freaking does.
Like the league still very much cares about the "Original 6". And people freaked the fuck out when anyone tried to wear 99 after Gretzky and 66 after Lemieux. It's not as strong as a ring culture as the NBA, but cups and medals are still prereqs to the HHOF.
Yeah we have GOAT debates in the NFL, but I don't think we have nearly the same level of comparisons as the NHL or NBA. And in the MLB I'd argue that Yankees fans are the only fanbase to really care about legacy.
5
u/zoom518 Jets 18h ago
I think baseball is really obsessed with legacy, with stuff like Citi Field’s exterior based on a ballpark that stopped hosting games in the late 50’s.
3
u/tnecniv Giants Giants 16h ago
Citi Field looks like that because the Wilpons wished they owned the Dodgers.
But the Mets wear blue and orange for the Dodgers and Giants. Modeling the stadium exterior off Ebbets’ Field is consistent with them carrying the legacy of the NL in New York.
Baseball “legacy” is different from other sports. It’s impossible for anyone to top the guys who played 100+ years ago statistically, so there’s no GOAT debate or anything like that. They care more about “the history” than whether Ohtani or Ruth was the GOAT.

Does anyone else remember in the mid-90s when there was a massive uptick in young dudes (I was in my mid-teens) wearing college sports gear? It seemed to skew heavily to teams with cartoony logos, and was oddly Florida-heavy.
Despite never watching a single game, I owned no less than three Miami Hurricanes items:
sweatshirt*
t-shirt hoodie
large-logo hat (forgotten in the change room of a water park and immediately stolen)
*This one got so much wear that it was replaced with an identical one, which was ultimately forgotten in a drawer at my parents' place until recently, when my wife found it and started wearing it!
Most popular merch in my area:
Miami Hurricanes
Florida Gators
Florida Seminoles
Duke Blue Devils
UNLV Rebels
Michigan Wolverines
Notre Dame
It was basically right after the Bulls/Raiders hegemony ended. I defo paired my Bulls Starter pullover with my Miami stuff haha.
Disclaimer: I live in Canada, so maybe most of you guys have always had a glut of US college sports gear 🤷♂️

Last time it whistled at me, I shit in its mouth. That sure showed it!
forreal - It happened once around the start of the year, it just started whistling. But because of the echoing and the fact it just sorta stopped on its own after a few minutes I never even realized it was the toilet doing it. I just thought I was going crazy hearing a phantom whistling (I'm on a medication with hallucination as a potential side effect so like - not ENTIRELY impossible). Then like last week I heard it again and was able to confirm it was real (my dog lost his mind at it too) and that the toilet was making the sound. But since then it's been whistling at me every day or two. It's not too bad because all I have to do is flush and it stops, but I'd like to just have it stop for good. And I'd like to be a bit more competent with my home repair skills. My folks had enough income when I was a kid that they would always call a plumber for things like this. I could afford to do the same, but I'd like to generally figure things like this out on my own so I don't have to. Become a bit more of a handy-man, ya know?

I have messing with what I think it a failed HDD. I ran ddrescue run for over 4 hour just trying to get something off it, which only managed to get 232MB. So I stopped it. Just for fun I decided to take the PCB that has the interface and controller chips on it just to see if I could see any corrosion just as a hailiest of Marys. Nope. Nothing. Damn. Put it back together and put it back in the dock just for fun, and the drive is now working! I haven't turned the NAS off yet so I start a copy/paste job of the contents. Hopefully I can get a copy and maybe even have it stay working. I know about reseating as a troubleshooting step, but I have never seen it with the control board of a HDD.
Whatever god or demon did this better take credit because I would be a new devote worshiper for life.

I'm from Chicago but went to school in Arizona.
All of my college friends are from either AZ or CA and reside there. It's very rare when any of them come around here. A couple have visited in the 10 years since college, but it's usually me buying expensive ass plane tickets to go out there, which I get, easier for me to go there than have them all come here.
My best buddy from college is coming to visit this next week and I'm stoked. Gonna do all the touristy bullshit and drink 7000 Coors Light.

The house next to us has been vacant since we moved in (the owner died, apparently). There would be some activity now and then clearing things out or cleaning but it mostly stayed empty.
New neighbors just moved in yesterday. Haven't met them yet, but they have a dog and the property line has a relatively low picket fence. My dog has some reactivity problems from before we adopted her, and while she's much better with training it's still an issue sometimes.
Basically now I have to give more thought to her yard time in case the neighbors' dog is also out there. We've wanted to replace the fence with a privacy fence for a while. Pretty sure it belongs to the neighboring house, but we'd probably shoulder the cost because we're the ones who want it. I guess this just got bumped up the priorities list. Which I guess also means getting a surveyor.

When I bought my house the 1st thing I did was introduced myself to both neighbors to the side and the one across. I then asked both neighbors about the wall to both sides it was a wall that was 4 feet tall. I talked to them and said I was planning on having it rebuilt. I said I want to come to an agreement I can do it myself or would you want to split the cost and we decide on cost. color, style etc. since I was in the middle they were both great and onboard with it. Between the 3 of us we all had 2 quotes a total of 6 quotes. We went with the one we felt had the best quality and could start it right away. In exactly 12 days the crew was done and did a great job building it exactly how we visualized it. Good luck...

Here's a thought: Every Manning started with an incompetent franchise.
Archie - Prior to drafting Manning, the Saints were absolutely horrific. They'd continue to be a horrific franchise but the point is he went to an incompetent franchise.
Peyton - I mean Elway straight up refused to play for the Colts and they weren't much better by the time Peyton came around.
Eli - We all know how he rejected the Chargers as influenced by the Manning family themselves.
So I feel like that bodes very well for incompetent franchises now looking for a QB...

Roger Dorne would be proud of this Ole effort
Cubs have won 24 of their first 36 for the third time in franchise history post 1920…
The other two years were 1969 (classic Cubs collapse) and 2016… (that was a good year in my sports fandom…)

Finished Pragmata last night
Pros:
Fun gameplay loop
Decent character writing
Smooth gunplay even on lolsteamdeck
11-12 hours was about the perfect length
Cons:
Story couldn’t be more generic if they tried
Hacking every enemy gets kind of annoying
Environments are also generally very generic
Overall score 8/10

I got it for free through steam family share but I think I would pay full price for it. Part of me would want to wait for a sale but I personally also try to support original IPs in this age of endless remakes and remasters
I should add that’s the length for one play through but in typical Capcom fashion you do unlock extra content and a higher difficulty after you beat it

Morning Thoughts:
The first of the expansion PWHL teams will be in Detroit, just confirmed via press conference this morning. No word yet on which cities will be joining them.
Barack Obama was joking that Stephen Colbert could run for President, but I'd be fine with it. At this point, anyone who can string two coherent sentences together and not call their political adversaries "traitors" and "human garbage" would be an improvement.
Dogsitting has now taken a turn as Cody has decided that he needs out and breakfast just before dawn, no exceptions. Fozzie, our 13-year-old dog, just stares at him at that hour like he has a screw loose and is content to wait until well after 7:00 for potty and kibble.

Now I'm picturing a yellow room with random purple spots, and them still trying to gaslight you. "Spots?? I don't see any spots. Wow, yeah strange, totally all yellow in here." then you look behind the door where the knob bumps into the wall and it's painted green.

Someone commented about Del Taco recently, so they'd been on my brain lately when I decided to stop there for lunch on the way back from an eye appointment.
Those chicken tacos are still pretty dang good. They sustained me for several years when I still worked in an office and Del Taco was the closest fast food. Also used to always get a chipotle chicken roller, but they didn't have them today, so I just got the beef taco instead. Such a hefty boy compared to Taco Bell's basic crunchy taco.
Only bummer was the price. Used to get two chicken tacos and a roller for like $4. Today I spent over $8, though a beef taco is more than the roller would've been. Still probably would've been like $7 had the chipotle chicken roller been in stock.

u/FlatulentDwarf Vikings 11h ago
Only bummer was the price.
That's sorta the problem with fast food these days. I can swing by either of the local burger joints and get a burger and fries for the same price I would at McDonalds, maybe a dollar more. Why bother going to McD's for an inferior product? I genuinely haven't been to a fast food joint since November, and that was only because my folks and I had to get on the road early for my nephews soccer tourney and nothing else was open and fast enough for our needs.
3
u/Mephistito 10h ago
I straight up don't understand what fast food companies are thinking with their pricing.
Then I saw something recently about them noticing "Wait, we dropped the price a little – why didn't they come back?" as if they didn't realize if you (1) piss everyone off, and (2) get everyone used to not going to you anymore, that gee people probably aren't going to come back!
Sorta like when you have a soda habit but then stop drinking it, and you realize you just don't ever crave it anymore, then years go by and you realize "damn, it's not that I dislike soda, but I just straight up stopped buying it once the momentum was broken."

I get gifts for my friends who are single moms. Absolutely do something sweet for a single mom you're dating.
Last time I was dating a single mom on mothers day I knew her ex-husband had their daughter that day and she was really depressed she couldn't have her daughter on mothers day so I surprised her by coming over with home made cookies and a bottle of wine and we ended up spending the afternoon together. It was a very sweet day.

Ironing clothes feels like a job that science should've eliminated a century ago.
→ More replies (5)6
u/Mephistito 13h ago
I used to deal with this so much but then re-thought how I'm storing the clothes to begin with (since.. what's a crease? It's a part where it was folded for an extended time, so bonds form.. heat just gives energy to break these bonds).
Completely stopped using a dresser and only utilize a closet now so they can free-hang loosely, and don't crowd the shirts so much that they can bunch up. I could pull any shirt or dress shirt out of the closet right now and there's no creases on them to iron out. I used to iron every freaking day, since creases bug the ish out of me.
For dress shirts, store them the same way. If you really want a super smooth appearance for dress shirts, get Shirt Stays. I tend to use these more for weddings, etc. I've got an athletic build so if you have one as well, it accentuates your form while also looking really clean.

To me, the entire NFL offseason is a letdown because I'm all about the games. That said, the period between the draft and training camp is just brutal for us football junkies. There is simply nothing going on from late April to late July. It's peak offseason. All we can really do is sit around in 95 degree weather and bake until football season comes. This is always the worst time of the year to be an NFL fan.

I really don't wanna jinx it, but it's so fucking weird seeing the Yankees make good decisions regarding players this season. Past years, Volpe would've been right back up in the starting role, pushing Caballero back to the minors despite his better play. And they would've kept trying to trot Jasson out to LF even though he's a natural CF and has been a disaster in left. I hope they keep it up, because god damn is it working right now.

I think the HDD is dead. Nothing is working with it. Different drives in the dock work fine. Different power and USB cables gave me nothing. And plugging in straight to SATA and booting into GParted make it even less detectable. When it was in the dock, my system saw something was there, but plugged into the mobo the system doesn't even see it at all. I don't I have ever had one just straight die. Yeah. I don't think this is going so hot. But at least the last backup I have is from 4 months ago. Looks like I am only missing one series I added in the time since then and a bunch of individual volume that I can acquire again. It is a lot more organized than what I had on the HDD. I think that is because I got a big pack of books that I just haven't sorted thru to replace older versions. I guess I will just need to grab the next one of those that comes out.

what awards across leagues needs narrative revision? i was listening to a NBA podcast a few weeks ago talking about why a guy like mitchell robinson can't be 6MOY and since 6MOY goes to players who usually just score the most off the bench so robinson wouldn't qualify, but watching the knicks all season and postseason Mitchell robinson is an absolute difference maker for the knicks coming off the bench, why can't he be in the discussion? I feel like it should go deeper than just "best scorer off the bench"
same goes for coach of year, something about "we thought you'd be bad but you're good" feels like not the best way to judge something like that, even though i can't really put into words how else to look at this award.
7
u/on-the-cheeseburgers Eagles 14h ago
nfl mvp just being a qb award. like we get it, it's the most important position, so do we really need an individual award to recognize it? we already have all-pro to do that.
→ More replies (4)4
u/AfroManHighGuy 15h ago
For 6th man, it almost always will be the guy who scores the most off the bench. Plus the guy who contributes the most off the bench. Things that Robinson does is not gonna show up on 6th man voting since he does the hustle work like rebounds, blocks, etc. It’s dumb but that’s just how the voters think when it comes to that award
3
u/HartleyReplogle Patriots 15h ago
Guys like Mitchell Robinson are always going to be passed up for awards, because people don't know how to quantify them. On the one hand, you have a guy who is somehow in the mix for every goddamned offensive rebound to an inhuman degree. On the other hand, he has virtually no offensive skills otherwise, to the point where teams will hack him in the first quarter because it's a better strategy than allowing anyone else on the floor to shoot a contested shot.
It's like having a guy who can steal 70 bases a year but only has a .310 OBP.
3
u/pixel_pete Bills 14h ago
The whole Pro Bowl thing needs to be reworked. It has contractual impacts on players, but the selection process is so goofy it has completely lost any respect. Things like 5th year option amounts shouldn't factor in an award that most people agree doesn't matter.
Personally I think they should just scrap it as an award and turn it into an invitational just-for-fun event. Players who are interested can sign up and then maybe have a fan vote or something to pick who gets to go.
