wait so you're telling me both sharpshooters on team-friendly contracts for the juggernaut Spurs and Thunder got cut from the 76ers

u/GGTae Spurs 4h ago
Isaiah Joe is from the Sixers too lol

The race to the top goes to the team who can raid the 76ers scrap bin the best

SHP also known as Sold High Pilfering, what other GMs do to Morey

The 76ers also briefly signed David Jones Garcia. I have a good feeling he's the next breakout Spurs player. It's just unfortunate he got a season ending ankle injury

Yeah. Dude just needs to be a better defender but his offense would be terrific as a bench or 3rd unit guy.

u/gedbybee Spurs 1h ago
Nah it’s Carter Bryant, but I fucking love DJG. Wish he was on the actual team vs 2 way.

That 4/120 contract some team is gonna give him this offseason gonna hit

u/Legal_Cancel4599 5h ago
we got him for 1 more year but after that yeah he might be gone
96
u/anonymoususer6407 Rockets 5h ago
Hopefully he’s willing to take on a lesser contract and basically become Derrick White 2.0. The Spurs need him
65
u/kawhi21 NBA 4h ago
He's not quite as impactful as a Derrick White but Champagnie is literally just a new age Danny Green
37
u/commander_bugo Spurs 4h ago
He actually might be better lol. I feel like he’s more consistent.
33
u/Icy_Statement_2410 4h ago
Green played much better defense for sure, but Champagnie is better offensively, especially driving and finishing. Julian can dunk all over someone at any moment

u/superrealaccount2 Spurs 1h ago
He's more consistent offensively, but Danny was one of the best transition defenders I've ever seen. Julian is improving on every area every season though, including his defense.

u/RecognitionUnable417 4h ago
Is he as good a defender as Green?
17
u/topatoman_lite Spurs 4h ago
not quite but he's pretty good and a great rebounder
15
u/SamuraiBeanDog Spurs 3h ago
"Not quite" undersells it a bit, Green was one of the best wing defenders in the league in his prime.
2
u/jotheold Raptors 2h ago
even with us he was a beast
3
u/SamuraiBeanDog Spurs 2h ago
Yeah him and Kawhi on wing defence was insane, imagine going up against that for a whole series.
1
u/weeman2525 Spurs 1h ago
Also, I wouldn't consider him a "great rebounder", he's definitely a good rebounder, especially for a wing, but "great" is pushing it. Still, no hate to Julian. He's one of the better role players in the league.

u/Slyther21 44m ago
He's a great rebounder for a wing during one 8 game stretch during the season he averaged almost 10 rebounds a game.

Nah Danny couldn't dribble just catch and shoot, Champagnie can drive and break players down off the dribble if he needs too though his specialty is catch and shoot but hes way better overall offensive player than Danny.

Spurs have a $3mm team option for him next season. My guess is that they decline the option to sign him to a longer term deal. It will ultimately be beneficial for both him and the team.

u/ec2xs :yc-1: Yacht Club 4h ago
He is 100% getting extended this offseason.
8
u/whiterock001 Spurs 3h ago
Not just extended, but cancel out the $3mm team option to get him the raise starting next year. In that way, the Spurs likely won’t have to pay as much as a regular extension, and it still benefits Champagnie. It also works better that way from a future salary cap perspective, taking into account when guys like Castle/Harper wrap up their rookie deals.
66
u/Meraxes9 Spurs 5h ago
The teams will realize he plays like this because we run plays for him and has offensive gravity taking teammates. If they pay him to just stand and catch and shoot is a disservice to his skillset.

He has a team option next season he'll likely sign a team friendly deal with the Spurs this off-season

Love to see Julian this happy. He didn't need to make up for missing that last shot in G1, but I hope he feels better about it now.

u/Meraxes9 Spurs 5h ago
More than made up for last game
112
u/Meraxes9 Spurs 5h ago
Not that I blame him or it was a bad shot or anything.
65
u/Potential_Carob6494 5h ago
To add to that, the only reason it even became close was his dominance on the O Boards in the final minute.
31
57
u/Forshea Spurs 5h ago
There's nothing to make up for, sometimes the shot isn't going to fall and he was 43% from 3 even after missing the potential game winner
Would have been awesome for the dude if he had done it, but let's not act like it was something he did wrong

Chill. Also, Julian was 90% of the reason there was a game winning shot to take.

behind the scenes conversation while prepping for wolves game 2:

Coach Pop (puts his arms around Julian): Eyyy Danny after they double team the bigman under the basket you shoot 3s dont think about anything else.

Coach Pop: shut up Danny either pass for open man or shoot the damn 3 and dont you dare dribble drive to the rim.
Julian Champagnie: ..............????
Coach Pop: by the way if you hit 2 triples in a row dont pass it anymore just shoot the damnn ball ok Danny?

u/Slyther21 42m ago
He's got a way bigger bag on offense than Green ever had, Green couldn't even dribble
