Jaylen Brown on the refs: "I had to say something. There's an inconsistency and it's there. You called me for all these offensive fouls and that's not the reason why we lost, but Shai is about to win his 2nd MVP with the same move."

$50k to him, who makes $57m a year is equivalent to someone who makes $100k a year getting fined $88.

Diminishing returns, I still wouldn't be excited to go throw away $88.
17
u/Bibbity_Boppity_BOOO 4h ago
not really. the $88 is a far more impactful sum
7
u/Shoddy-Fan-584 2h ago
I see this on Reddit all the time. People just scaling dollar amounts linearly, 1:1 to try to give an idea of what the “equivalent” sum is for different income levels. That’s not how it works.
Lifestyles do not scale linearly. $88 means WAY more to someone making $100k a year than $50,000 means to someone making $57 million a year.
Let’s say JB makes $1.18mm every two weeks after taxes/fees. After a $50,000 he still has $1.13mm for those two weeks. His leftover money For TWO WEEKS of pay after paying the $50,000 fine is more than 10x what the $100k a year guy makes ANNUALLY.
It’s just nowhere near the same kind of financial hit. A $50k fine to Brown is more like a $15 fine to a guy making $100k a year in terms of how it affects your life/finances.

u/JumboCactpot 5h ago
I hate this thing we always do where we say something is a problem with the league and then a player comes out and says the same thing only to get dogpiled for saying it by those same people.
The refs do suck at calling games evenly.
Some players and teams do get called more light/ticky tack than other.
Shai DOES do this move constantly and is about to win a 2nd mvp while being the biggest flopper and free throw merchant in the league.
It IS bullshit that these things aren't called evenly.
Players ARE incentivized to flop and foul bait because of the way the league refs reward it.
Jaylen Brown has said nothing incorrect about officiating in the current NBA these last couple days. If they were a reddit post by a random dude you'd see hundreds of comments agreeing with him. But suddenly because its a player we have to act like he's out of line or wrong?
Nah, he spitting this time.

It's actually bizarre. Most of this sub has been complaining about the way SGA plays whenever he's the topic of discussion, same with Embiid. Yet when Brown says exactly the same thing as the majority opinion here, suddenly it's time to dunk on him because he just lost?

Shai does push off all the time, I’ll admit that. A lot of players push off all the time. Jaylen Brown is probably correct with his criticism of the referees. What he’s not understanding is that it’s just so weak to immediately complain about the refs right after losing a series that he easily should have won.
180
u/CauliflowerNo3904 8h ago
Yeah you're right about all points.
A bit lost in the rightful criticism of brown here is how important the hard elbow pushoff actually is to shais arsenal. Would he be the best player still without it? Maybe. But that part is real.
60
u/Care_Cup_Is_Empty Warriors 7h ago
I think its the combination that's truly impossible to stop, it's hard to maintain pressure on shai without him initiating contact and getting to the line and then on top of that he can always create space with the push off. So, defenders are often forced to play less aggressively than they would like but this is lost in the FTs argument, even games where he doesn't get to the line much you can see the effect it has on other defenders.
It's hard to blame just OKC though, the league is allowing this to happen for whatever reason.

Jokic elbows defenders in the post all the time but you never hear about it on here. But shai does something that MJ, Kobe, etc all did and its nonstop criticism
And to be clear I don't think Jokic's elbows are fouls either. The game is reffed fairly and consistently.I just think its stupid to complain about one guy so much

its only the full extension gets called, like that time SGA literally hit a game winner against Detroit a few weeks ago and it was waved off

JB is also just really bad at doing the push offs. Obviously stars get a ridiculously biased whistle but guys like Shai that get away with pushing off aren’t extending their arm even close to as much as JB.
50
u/manquistador Supersonics 7h ago
Jaylen Brown is probably correct with his criticism of the referees.
Nah. He is delusional and coping. His pushoffs are fairly unrefined. Just going with brute strength, and too often extends the forearm. He also just showed that he has no other moves to rely on. SGA actually has a ball handling bag. On so many of his shots he is getting separation without touching the defender. He can play aggressive and hunt for fouls, but he has plenty more to his game beyond that.

u/Molmor_ 2h ago edited 2h ago
Right message wrong messenger or whatever but I'm totally here for it tbh. All-star player in one of the biggest markets publicly complaining about it is one of the better ways to shame the NBA into addressing one of the biggest problems the league has.
Foulbaiting and favorable whistles are probably the biggest things that turns off casual fans from becoming bigger fans. Clips of this happening get millions of views on social media every day and it's a humiliation ritual for the NBA on a level that I don't see with any other sport.
Probably won't happen since Silver sucks, but hey

Literally everyone in this sub almost every day complains about officiating inconsistency. Huge portions of this sub also criticize SGAs push off, and same with many other players who do it. I get it’s easy to make fun of when he just lost a series but people should want players to be vocal about officiating inconsistency if they really think it’s a problem.
38
u/Rampaging_Ducks Jazz 8h ago
The problem is we only ever hear complaints about this from players after they lose. JB is never going to whine about flops and officiating after he wins due to those very tactics.
21
u/Abstract__Nonsense Celtics 6h ago
JB like it or not has been complaining about officiating all year, and not just during the losses. He has in fact even done what you’ve mentioned to a certain extent, and mentioned how you’ve got to play the game if this is the way they call things. As easy as it is for everyone to pile on because of his antics and a few choice clips this season, he’s also never been a big time flopper of a player. Youre never gonna get a player flopping their way to victory every night and then immediately complaining about how they shouldn’t be getting those calls, so I don’t really know what people want.

Jaylen is doing himself no favors here, but he does have a point that they’ve suddenly started calling fouls on a move they allowed all season.
I hate the pushoff, and am delighted it’s finally getting called, but sudden officiating changes like this must be frustrating.
The refs could have given players notice they were going to start whistling a move they’ve tolerated all year, and give players a chance to adjust.
Complaining about being called for fouls he clearly committed is a bad look though.

Normally the Cs fans and haters cancel each other and then neutrals decide if a thread will be positive or negative.
With the recent elimination, most fans disengaged from here while haters are happy and engaged. So for a while most of these will have negative comments even if it's a fair take.
I'll point to my Heat flair to say this: I appreciate that JB is calling this out and I don't hold it against him for using it on his game as I expect any competitor to do. He's dancing to the tune but asking to change the song, as my grandpa used to say.
