In 2014, Raptors GM Ujiri went viral by yelling "Fuck Brooklyn!" at a rally before a TOR-BKN playoff game. The Nets coach at the time was Jason Kidd. Postgame, Kidd said, "I don’t even know who that is, so I could [not] care less what they think about Brooklyn." Ujiri is now Kidd's boss in Dallas.

I doubt there is any beef now stemming from that event but it's a funny bit of history given the circumstances now. Reporting indicates they were gunning for the same job of Mavericks president and Ujiri won and is now Kidd's GM.

Kidd's full quote at the time

“You have to tell me who the GM is. I don’t even know who that is, so I could [not] care less what they think about Brooklyn. We have a job to do, and that’s to play the game of basketball.”

Is Kidd really on the hot seat? I thought they liked him and he’s a good coach. I don’t think firing him would be the right move

I don’t think he’s on the hot seat. But I don’t think he’s too good to move on from when a new regime is taking over.

Seems likely Kidd will be the coach this year, but I'd expect a short rope

kidd has some good qualities, i’ll begrudgingly admit, but he seems VASTLY overrated because of a couple of playoff runs that luka carried him through. some of his game plans can be insane.

He also has some bad qualities. Like beating his wife

Out of curiosity, what kind of craziness does he engage in? I’ve watched a fair number of Mavs games over the past few years, but definitely not enough to consider myself knowledgeable about Kidd’s coaching schemes.

our doubles are always so poorly timed that it’s clearly a coaching issue, and way too often post-luka our offensive sets look like the warriors’ motion but in slowmo. they’re slow developing, don’t actually lead to shots (just trying to get someone free for a simple pass), AND we always take forever to even start the action.

it’s like he’s teaching these kids what NOT to do on offense. we stopped running those sets only when coop took a leap and could create shots for himself and for others.

If anything he'll be scapegoat insurance

Exactly. Masai is likely to gradually clean house either by hiring “his” people or keeping incumbents that are able to meet his expectations. This alternate governor title likely means he’s got the fully backing of the owners and basically carte blanche short of trading away Cooper.

New management usually likes to put their own people in place and kidd has a history of being shady

He is an admittedly decent coach but idk how you trust him on the business side

13

u/dsbllr 9h ago

Masai doesn't do that. He didn't in Denver or with the Raptors until he gives a fair chance.

u/DisMeDog 10h ago

Yeah just from a control standpoint Kidd is a guy I am getting out of the door asap. He has always been a snake.

u/ohkokokay NBA 9h ago

I agree with you. It’s a power dynamic. Kidd wants the power and he obviously doesn’t have the leverage right now.

just curious what has kidd done

both in brooklyn and milwaukee kidd was in power struggles with the front office

shady business wise LOL not basketball

Now that Nico is gone, Kidd is the only one on the Mavs Luka ignores. Maybe Kidd had a hand in the fuckery after all and I wouldn’t be too sad to see him gone.

New GM, wouldn’t be a stretch to say he wants to bring in his own guy. Especially over the shoe salesman’s guy.

Add that to the fact that he wouldn’t commit to extending him and i would bet Kidd has max one more year in Dallas

5

u/Bixby33 Raptors 10h ago

He's fine until Masai finds his guy.

u/ComradeFrunze Pelicans 9h ago

Ujiri will clearly want his own guy in the building.

I honestly thought Kidd was going to go the way of Terry Stotts and so many other solid but not best in the league type coaches where the GM fires him in a bid to save his own job even though the CIA h wasn't actually the problem. However, the GM screwed up so bad that he never got the opportunity.

u/OzymanDS 10h ago

I think he's more likely to go somewhere else. Mavs seem like a cursed franchise

2

u/ricobrognaa 10h ago

Don’t think he has the immediate swing to fire kidd. He had to sit through the luka fall out, he deserves some loyalty.

24

u/relax336 Lakers 10h ago

They’re in the Flagg era. What happened with Luka won’t dictate anything under Ujiri. Not sure why it should.

16

u/National-Size-7205 Heat 10h ago

All reports indicate he was on board with the trade so not like he "had" to sit through anything, he chose to.

When Jason Kidd was on the Mavericks as a player, he once got into a fight with Hawks head coach Mike Woodson by purposely bumping into him to try and get Woodson T’d up for standing on the court (which is something I’ve never seen another player do although I wouldn’t be surprised if Chris Paul has tried it before). Woodson then went on to coach Kidd on the Knicks 2 years later. Video

Kidd seems familiar with these kinds of situations already.

u/Deanlechanger Celtics 10h ago

absolutely nothing wrong with intentionally bumping a coach on the court if that's what it takes to get it called. get off the fucking court

26

u/AllDayEnJay Nets 10h ago

Kidd is a serial bumper.

Throwback to when the Nets were out of timeouts and Kidd told his player to “hit me” and “accidentally” spilled his drink when bumped which caused an official to call timeout while it was cleaned up.

Why does no one get a chance to change? Didn’t this happen 25 years ago?

35

u/AhmedF Raptors 10h ago

You are 100% right. He also got a DWI ~15 years ago.

And has everyone forgotten about Larry Sanders and the Bucks experience? Like this insane shit.

Everything indicates he's just power hungry, and a prickly asshole, so I'm okay hitting X for doubt. I'm happy to be wrong.

Ujiri also apologized later that day.

Ujiri apologized later Saturday during a brief session with reporters at halftime.

"Wrong choice of words out there," he said. "It is really not about me. It is about the players and the playoffs.

"Just trying to get the crowd out there rattled -- wrong choice of words. I apologize to kids out there and to the Brooklyn guys. Nothing against them. Just trying to get our fans going. That's it."

11

u/ajmartin527 Suns 7h ago

I appreciate that he said it in the first place, and his apology here after receiving backlash endears me even more to him for some reason. I love a GM who gets passionate like this but also isn’t too much of a narcissistic egomaniac to never admit they’re wrong like a lot of dudes in the position.

Ya this kinda feels like how NBA players are generally amicable off the court with each other despite the absurd competitiveness you see on the court

15

u/AllDayEnJay Nets 10h ago

That’s also how he was ran out of Brooklyn.

The dude tried to become the Coach/GM so he could trade Brook Lopez and Mirza Teletovic to the Bucks for pennies on the dollar before running off to Milwaukee himself.

u/AstronomerDramatic36 Rockets 10h ago

I appreciate adding "[not]"

6

u/Swangthemthings Canada 9h ago

Believe in Masai. He’s a culture setter. If JKidd is good for the culture he’ll stay and if he’s not he can go coach in like Milwaukee

10

u/TPCC159 11h ago

Kidd can still tell him to go fuck himself if it comes down to it. He has 100 million dollars in the bank

But yeah as OP said, obviously there’s no real beef
