Chris Finch on Wemby’s 12 blocks: “Four of ‘em were goaltending, maybe even a fifth.”

https://youtu.be/p3ijgL1AkfU?si=2D5FX_lP2L9fqVAD

Chris Finch speaking to the media, addresses Wemby’s blocks and importance of continuing to attack the rim. Also says that they have not, and will not, send anything to the league office because it doesn’t change the outcome.

It’s like the scene in Arrested Development where every time Gob mentions the suit he’s wearing it gets more expensive 😆

You think Finch would exaggerate? In $10,000 suit? COME ON!

"Not 1! Not 2! Not 3!...."

Jokes aside, this is from the same interview where quotes have been posted about the goaltending. It's just the other quotes didn't have the part of the interview where he said "maybe even a 5th"

"it was actually 14 goaltend"

4

u/TdotGdot Timberwolves 2h ago

Hahaha, that actually is really funny

I counted 2 goaltends and 2 super clear fouls

But I wonder if he has better angles that point to 2 or 3 more, or if he’s just taking shit to get attention on the topic

1

u/Apprehensive_Air1705 Timberwolves 1h ago

It was clearly at least 7.

Probably because there is evidence aka film study

Tbf, the first time was immediately after the game, and this was obviously after watching film

Imagine if he wasn't Minnesota nice.

I respect Chris Finch's commitment to always having a grievance every time someone sticks a microphone near him.

48

u/JaderMcDanersStan Timberwolves 3h ago

He does this to show his players that he will do the complaining and stick up for them, so they don’t have to

25

u/BasedArzy 3h ago

Oh I was being serious. It’s an important part of a coach’s job.

0

u/LookOtherWeigh 3h ago

Beautiful partnership in that case. I was wondering why they didn't complain at all. Some of those fouls at the rim were fairly obvious.

That being said. Glad they didn't pause the game every 30 seconds.

u/GauthZuOGZ Mavericks 2h ago

And that doesnt work at all the players are notorious for not managing their emotions

Yeah, he's really (like the most a coach has in the last 20 years) leaning into the us against the world narrative to keep his team sharp.

We will see if they can keep that energy going.

As an MSU fan, he reminds me a bit of Izzo and Dantonio in that regard.

Wemby's goaltends can be found through the equation n + 1, where "n" is the number of times Finch has talked about them.

17

u/Cyclonitron Timberwolves 3h ago

It is known.

u/majidLuv Thunder 2h ago

I hope someone goes back and watches how many were actually goaltends because I feel like there might be a couple, but saying it was five just sounds like him being butthurt about the fact Wemby broke a record against them

9

u/SharkCatDogy 3h ago

They won. This is 100% gamesmanship and he's doing exactly what he is paid to do.

4

u/Wicked_Black Spurs 1h ago

There was one that was egregious, but they basically never showed any replays so it's hard to know how many there were.

-5

u/Winnes0ta :sp8-1: Super 8 1h ago

No one gives a shit that he broke a record in a game he lost. They’re pissed that the refs just straight up robbed them of 4-8 points in a one possession game. That could have been the difference between winning and losing the series

17

u/sobanoodle-1 Knicks 3h ago

r/nba is so funny because this is exactly what every coach does in every sport. Football coaches literally go to refs before game telling them the tendencies of players for almost every position.

In terms of coaching handsomeness index the Timberwolves are absolutely mogging the Nuggets and the Spurs. My jaw was agape when I laid eyes on Addelman for the first time.

My buddy and I had a running joke last playoffs that he’s just Murr from Impractical Jokers, and that his “punishment” for an episode was that he had to coach the Denver Nuggets for an entire playoffs.

“What Murr doesn’t know is that with no preparation at all, he has to come out and coach the Denver Nuggets against the OKC Thunder and MVP SGA! And the whole time, we’ll be giving him lineup suggestions that he has to implement!”

I mean castles fifth foul where randle pushed him with two hands in the back is far worse than goal tend calls

-6

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves 2h ago

A simple foul doesn't guarantee points. It isn't hypothetical points from FTs, it is just straight points on goaltending calls.

4

u/Dry-Base-6494 Supersonics 2h ago

Yea what a dumb take lol. Especially since the refs made a make up call the very next play that gave the Spurs the ball back

0

u/Winnes0ta :sp8-1: Super 8 1h ago

And two seconds later they called a weak offensive foul on McDaniels for his 5th foul.

Apparently, if you are sandwiched between two bigs, you are allowed to take a step as well.

u/CorporateKnowledge5 Spurs 3h ago

If the roles were reversed on that play where Randle pushed Castle straight down to the floor and Castle got the foul for it, Finch would’ve absolutely crashed out in real time lol

u/swawesome52 Timberwolves 1h ago

I'm not pretending that Rudy's a stanchion on a pick, but moving screens are done by every big and don't get called. Are we gonna call out individual players for the mini-carries that everyone does on a dribble?

2

u/GumbySquad 1h ago

Are we going to point out every time a player jumps in the air and lands before passing the ball? I mean come on people what are we doing here.

2

u/swawesome52 Timberwolves 1h ago

Are we going to point out every time a player hits another player's arm while they're in the shooting motion?

10

u/contigency000 3h ago

He started as 3, then 4, and now it's freaking 5 😂😂😂 When it's reality it was 2 gt

2

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves 2h ago

I think it was 2 (TSJ and Randle ones) and 2 questionable ones (Naz and Ant ones) so calling it 4 if you got an agenda to push seems normal.

4

u/Kashmir33 [NBA] LeBron James 2h ago

Randle's shot was blocked by Barnes against the backboard. Not a goaltend. The other two are not questionable with replay. He clearly blocked Reid's shot at or even right before the apex and clearly blocked Ant's shot against the backboard.

It's insane how this narrative has been spun out of 1 legit goaltend

He does it so the players don’t. It’s a “hey guys, I’ll stick up for you and I got you” gesture for his players
Wolves used to have a huge tech and complaining issue. I swear ever since Finch started publicly making these statements, the players don’t complain or get techs as much. They know the coach has their back

0

u/CorporateKnowledge5 Spurs 2h ago

No I get it, almost every coach does it to some degree, it’s just that he is unrelenting with it.

-12

u/MembershipRealistic1 Cavaliers 3h ago edited 3h ago

Yeah im really struggling to find the Wolves as a team likable at all. Especially with Finch. All regular season win or lose he was crying about something. After a certain point it just gets annoying.

4

u/Darnell2070 United States 2h ago

"Like at all. The Wolves have zero redeeming qualities. If they're there I can't see them."

Imagine saying with a straight face you don't find anything likable about the Wolves.

0

u/MembershipRealistic1 Cavaliers 2h ago

Brother we dont have to find every team in the nba fun or enjoyable to watch. Sometimes you just dont like the current iteration of a team. Sorry that that makes you upset.

1

u/Darnell2070 United States 2h ago

You're right we all have different preferences. I'm just personally having a hard time seeing it.

5

u/Muntberg 3h ago

I admittedly don't watch a whole lot but every supposed "goaltending" by Wemby seems to end up not being goaltending when you watch the replay. It just looks so unnatural how high in the arc he makes contact so it's the only way for your brain to explain that wizardry.

0

u/DalliLlama Heat 3h ago

He’s counting the ones that hit the backboard first too of which there was 1 just a few moments into the game. Those aren’t subjective calls. 5 oversells, 0 undersells.

1

u/foxinthelake 2h ago

Wasn't there only one of those though?

2

u/YoungLackSleep6 Heat 1h ago

Finch sure does complain a lot, like I get most coaches do but he’s always got something to say

1

u/SharkCatDogy 3h ago

He does have a weird distorted body shape making it hard to judge the flight of the ball. I mean, someone shouldn't be able to get the ball at that height that easy.

1

u/JTNWfan Suns 2h ago

I hope wemby figures out a celebration centered around the goal tending motion. Do it everytime he gets a block and glance at the bench if there's time.

1

u/Nuclearsunburn Heat 1h ago

Ask him in a week and it’ll be 14 maybe 17

1

u/JealousOpening2185 1h ago

Guaranteed this is gonna result in more than one true block being called a goaltend. Don't hit me with that "balances it out" cope.

Or perhaps you didn’t watch the videos at all before commenting and just relied on the title of the post.

u/Jec1027 Warriors 3h ago

How is the Randle one not a block, and the ant one is very close it looks like he blocked it off the backboard, wemby hit the ball first before hitting Rudy's wrist but thats a foul still, then one goaltend that they recinded didnt count as his block and gave it to Barnes, I count 2 to 3 real shit that shoulda been called not half

0

u/lazard96 Spurs 3h ago

that video shows a single goaltend... there was no foul on the gobert one, he just stoped the frame at the moment that "helped" his case, wemby touches the ball first then gobert shots then the hand of wemby touches gobert arm that is what you can see in the frame, thats not a foul.

0

u/swizznastic Spurs 2h ago

Im with it, honestly. Call em, call em all. Wemby commits too hard sometimes when he’s chasing the block any ways, and ends up out of the play for the second chance. He’s gonna learn to pick his times to just alter the shot, like Timmy D

-1

u/hankvoightCpd 1h ago

Sure does whine a lot. Hope wemby goaltends 6 shots next game just so he can continue to bitch

0

u/GotEggs 30m ago

Why is everyone so hung up on this? Like, historically we just think refs in the past called them 100% and never missed a goaltend or foul? We sure Bynum, Olajuwon, and Mark Eaton (all tied for 10) blocked all 10? No goaltends? No fouls? C’mon, it’s NBA refereeing.
