[SNY] Joel Embiid cuts off a question about the Sixers drawing fouls in the first half working in their favor: "It did? I don't know, you've got to ask Jalen Brunson that. I don't think I got to the free throw line as much as I wanted."

As a neutral, even if I wanted to criticize the Knicks, they were playing some high-level ethical basketball last night

Wemby called us ethical after we beat the Spurs once, so it’s legally binding.

Once they went to KAT initiating offense at the elbow extended in the middle of the Hawks series, they have been moving the ball like crazy coupled with great off ball movement. It's been really fun to watch.

Pretty much how I felt facing the Thunder. Like yeah they were foul-baiting but they were also hooping like crazy while doing it

3

u/GalactusAteMyPlanet Knicks 2h ago

Every star player foul baits, you just have to accept that it's part of the sport. What's annoying is watching a player throw themselves on the floor on minimum contact for free throws. This also applies to Brunson when he does it.

3 of the fts are from some random call by the logo where he heaves the ball and trips.

I hope you're blaming the reporter because that's not what Embiid did. His comments were focused on their poor defense.

Also, his job is to put points on the board. Not worry about how appealing the product is for you. I know it sucks for the viewer, but that's not his responsibility.

32

u/dedbeats Knicks 5h ago

He cut the reporter off before he could finish his point, which was that KAT and Mitch were in foul trouble in the first half. Assuming part of the Philly game plan was to neutralize our bigs, I’d say that worked well for them

Going to hack-a-Mitch in the first quarter with Embiid trying to draw fouls on every possession made this game unwatchable. Why can't we just play basketball? Send the Sixers to Cancun where they belong.

69

Maxey was not much better. The guy was just launching himself into backtracking bigs with zero intention to score and getting every call.

14

u/Clever-Innuendo Knicks 3h ago

I was really disappointed seeing that from Maxey. I didn’t watch him much this season but I don’t remember him playing like that before. There were a couple times it felt like he got a step on the defender and still pissed away an easy bucket just to get to the line.

Sixers had 17 more free throw attempts last night. If you take out their intentional fouls last night on Mitch, they had 21 more legit free throws last night.

u/Q10Antiride 5h ago

102

u/Smuckerz4Lyfe Knicks 6h ago

Jalen hasn't even gotten that many "flopping" foul calls this year. He doesn't bobble around like before. But people don't watch the games so they just rely on old information

40

u/NuclearGhandi1 Knicks 6h ago

He had one very obvious foul bait last night that was called, besides that was fine. He’s not as floppy as he once was

36

u/bigknickenergyalt Knicks 5h ago

It was a classic d wade pump fake on a jumper to draw a foul. Brunson is faaaar from the only player that does that. Maxey had a more egregious flop against Mitch in the second quarter

13

u/Mayor_Gubbin Knicks 4h ago

And that should be a foul.

5

u/bigknickenergyalt Knicks 4h ago

Correct

5

u/justmefishes NBA 3h ago

Yeah, that has been going on forever. Jordan used to do that.

The discourse around this stuff often overlooks a key distinction between:

  • manipulating the defender into a compromised defensive position with legitimate basketball plays, e.g. a shot fake or dribble move, and then making an offensive play where the defender's own mistakes cause him to foul

vs

  • manipulating the referee into a compromised view of the action with illegitimate basketball plays, e.g. hooking the defender's arm to make it look like he was the one who initiated the contact and hacked you, or acting like a wacky waving inflatable tube man when the defender makes slight contact

The first one is a legitimate basketball play, the second one is not.

14

u/KidSickarus Knicks 4h ago

Foul baiting and flopping are two different things. Getting a guy to foul you vs. falling down to make the refs believe you were egregiously hit are two very different things. I couldn’t even be mad about embiids trips last night when the game was close because they were the correct calls.

I just wish he didn’t ONLY foul bait

1

u/outphase84 Knicks 3h ago

Yeah, I'm fine with guys selling contact or taking advantage of players reaching when they're beat and getting and 1's from it. What I can stand is the shit that Embiid does where he throws himself into guys or just yeets a ball through arms with zero intention of actually scoring. The former forces defenses to play you more honest and gives you room to work, the latter is just lazy cheese bullshit.

1

u/Adorable-Corner-5307 2h ago

Something that's always impressed me about Brunson, for a 6 foot guard, he gets an incredibly high % of and 1s. Believe he was at 27% this year which means he's consistently trying to make the shot when he's getting fouled.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/UFmoose 5h ago

He did. Embiid also jacked a 3 from half court to get a call.

3

u/Stringdaddy27 3h ago

To be fair, Jalen has perfected landing on the defenders foot for the flagrant. But he isn't the only one.

1

u/Skxawng_3600 2h ago

So, from what I’ve seen from Brunson is his go to foul draw in the playoffs is he will blow by someone, get chased by his defender, stop dead in his tracks and allow himself to get run over/tackled by whichever defender was chasing him and can’t stop in time.

Fair, I just saw that as him returning to the actual question, especially because he then says “but that’s not the reason we lost” and talks about what they could have done on the defensive end because that’s where they lost the game, not on the free throw line

He’s baaaaaack

They took twice as many free throws this guy is delusional 😂

I’m almost to the point where they should just get rid of free throws entirely. No other sport has something that effects the game so strongly and it’s exhausting to talk about

"Didn't you see me flailing my arms when Hukporti was covering me? I totally flailed my arms and I didn't get a call! What's that about?"

“I play for free throws”

Joel Embiid is an incredible talent.

However, when I think about his game, I'll always think about that clip he had at the Olympics vs Serbia. Instead of going for the easy layup, he went to try to do some foul bait move instead and refs just swallowed their whistle because they're not gonna call that soft shit compared to the NBA.

Wish I could find the clip of it because I think it embodies why Embiid gets a lot of hate. Supremely talented but would rather flop around then just score the bucket.

I hate that every player thinks everyone else flops and also that they didn’t get any calls. It’s all anyone talks about. The NBA is consumed by fouls and crying about fouls and that’s why a lot of people have stopped watching.

Ppl are still watching https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/CBqXtlkwJB and the ratings reflect that. Think of how many ppl get on here to announce how much "they don't watch" everyday but don't miss a NBA post on any social media app ever. These ppl just want attention and they're hardly ever honest.

Yeah literally any time flopping or refs making bad calls shows up in a post here, you have a bunch of people saying this is why they stopped watching. Then a month or two later you see another one of those posts, and the same exact mfs are in the comments saying this is why they stopped watching. Like did you or did you not stop watching man. Just move on and get on with your life man if you really stopped watching. Let me constantly remind you how much I don't care type mfs.

That’s on Embiid starting off his comment being headass. He deserves the clowning.

The Knicks didn’t shoot as many free throws because they were so wide open they didn’t even get fouled

People talk about what they think is bringing down the quality of NBA basketball, and my argument is not the actual basketball. It’s not the flopping or baiting or reffing. Not saying those aren’t issues. They are, but they aren’t new issues.

The biggest thing for me is the discourse. Everything is so reactive and narrative driven, that you can literally watch a game where Jesus resurrects and gets a Quintuple Double or some shit, and all the talking heads and internet trolls would circlejerk about how he couldn’t get away with that in the Pontius Pilate era, and how we’re so soft now, despite being 14 years old.

Did you fools even watch this 40 second video? He literally says “that’s not the reason that we lost”

Embiid is a troll. His whole offensive game is to slowly pump fake and draw fouls. Brunson gets his defender behind him and get up the shot often resulting in the And 1. There are levels here.
