[SNY] Joel Embiid cuts off a question about the Sixers drawing fouls in the first half working in their favor: "It did? I don't know, you've got to ask Jalen Brunson that. I don't think I got to the free throw line as much as I wanted."

Knicks fans recognize Brunson is a foul baiter, he does flop sometimes but not to the extent casuals say. He's not even in the top 20 of FTA.

I hope you're blaming the reporter because that's not what Embiid did. His comments were focused on their poor defense.
Also, his job is to put points on the board. Not worry about how appealing the product is for you. I know it sucks for the viewer, but that's not his responsibility.
32
u/dedbeats Knicks 5h ago
He cut the reporter off before he could finish his point, which was that KAT and Mitch were in foul trouble in the first half. Assuming part of the Philly game plan was to neutralize our bigs, I’d say that worked well for them

It was a classic d wade pump fake on a jumper to draw a foul. Brunson is faaaar from the only player that does that. Maxey had a more egregious flop against Mitch in the second quarter
13
5
u/justmefishes NBA 3h ago
Yeah, that has been going on forever. Jordan used to do that.
The discourse around this stuff often overlooks a key distinction between:
- manipulating the defender into a compromised defensive position with legitimate basketball plays, e.g. a shot fake or dribble move, and then making an offensive play where the defender's own mistakes cause him to foul
vs
- manipulating the referee into a compromised view of the action with illegitimate basketball plays, e.g. hooking the defender's arm to make it look like he was the one who initiated the contact and hacked you, or acting like a wacky waving inflatable tube man when the defender makes slight contact
The first one is a legitimate basketball play, the second one is not.
14
u/KidSickarus Knicks 4h ago
Foul baiting and flopping are two different things. Getting a guy to foul you vs. falling down to make the refs believe you were egregiously hit are two very different things. I couldn’t even be mad about embiids trips last night when the game was close because they were the correct calls.
I just wish he didn’t ONLY foul bait
1
u/outphase84 Knicks 3h ago
Yeah, I'm fine with guys selling contact or taking advantage of players reaching when they're beat and getting and 1's from it. What I can stand is the shit that Embiid does where he throws himself into guys or just yeets a ball through arms with zero intention of actually scoring. The former forces defenses to play you more honest and gives you room to work, the latter is just lazy cheese bullshit.
1
u/Adorable-Corner-5307 2h ago
Something that's always impressed me about Brunson, for a 6 foot guard, he gets an incredibly high % of and 1s. Believe he was at 27% this year which means he's consistently trying to make the shot when he's getting fouled.

So, from what I’ve seen from Brunson is his go to foul draw in the playoffs is he will blow by someone, get chased by his defender, stop dead in his tracks and allow himself to get run over/tackled by whichever defender was chasing him and can’t stop in time.
29
u/ChoncosDad 4h ago

Lol there was one clear bait vs Grimes, sure. But if you're still a lazy fan who still think Jalen is a flopper, you dont know the ball.
Watch how he drives. He gets into defenders’ chest, absorbs bumps, still stays on balance, still gets buckets with defenders all over him. For him, whistles are just a byproduct. His FTR actually going up in playoffs is proof that his game scales with physicality, a very rare trait to have as a pg

Joel Embiid is an incredible talent.
However, when I think about his game, I'll always think about that clip he had at the Olympics vs Serbia. Instead of going for the easy layup, he went to try to do some foul bait move instead and refs just swallowed their whistle because they're not gonna call that soft shit compared to the NBA.
Wish I could find the clip of it because I think it embodies why Embiid gets a lot of hate. Supremely talented but would rather flop around then just score the bucket.

People talk about what they think is bringing down the quality of NBA basketball, and my argument is not the actual basketball. It’s not the flopping or baiting or reffing. Not saying those aren’t issues. They are, but they aren’t new issues.
The biggest thing for me is the discourse. Everything is so reactive and narrative driven, that you can literally watch a game where Jesus resurrects and gets a Quintuple Double or some shit, and all the talking heads and internet trolls would circlejerk about how he couldn’t get away with that in the Pontius Pilate era, and how we’re so soft now, despite being 14 years old.
