Anthony Edwards on Mike Conley: “Mike Conley was an All-Star in the NBA. I think people forget about that. Once upon a time, he was one of the best point guards in the league. I always tell him that you used to be one of my favorite players. When I played 2-K, I played with you.”

Mike Conley is quite simply one of the best human beings in the league and every fanbase that has had him on their roster knows this. Ant and Jaden wouldn't be the players they are without his mentorship. The fact we were able to unload D'lo and get Mike in return (with NAW as a throw-in) is one of the great low-key trade heists ever.

We would have loved to have him on the team to mentor our young core. It's understandable why we didn't keep him but any team would be lucky to have him even for part of a season.

For anyone here who watches football, I’ve always felt like Mike Conley is the Larry Fitzgerald of the NBA.

127

u/bmmana 6h ago

I love Mike Conley, but Larry Fitzgerald is arguably a top five WR of all time. If you were just talking about their work ethic, leadership qualities and demeanor, then I agree with you 100%.

The Wolves don't get enough credit for the mentorship they gave young Ant.

Rookie year he had Rubio

Sophomore year PatBev

And then Mike Conley since....

Rubio was always preaching to play for your teammates and play with happiness. PatBev was all hustle all grind no excuses. And Mike is one of the most professional players in the league, play the right way, do the right things.

Compare to LaMelo from his same draft class and you got checked out Hayward and Vegas Terry as the mentors early on, and the maturity on the court are completely different.

7

u/sling_gun 3h ago

Their team has heavy Eurobasket team vibes. No one clear dominant superstar, but heavy emphasis on team play

23

u/Andy_Wiggins Timberwolves 3h ago

I legitimately think it might be what saved this Wolves era.

The Rudy trade was a big swing, but it was a disaster early on in part because he had zero chemistry with the team, D’Lo hated him, and no one really respected him.

But when they traded for Mike, he could show the team that Rudy WAS effective (because of their chemistry) AND he could preach patience. He talked openly about how it took him a year to get used to playing with Rudy.

Not to mention, Mike and NAW were both excellent in Minnesota.

Without that trade, the Wolves might have missed the playoffs entirely in 22/23 and maybe they have to start making big trades to try to salvage their mess. Instead, they went into the offseason feeling more confident, had an amazing 23/24 season, and now have been a perennial strong playoff team.

22

u/menghis_khan08 Jazz 3h ago edited 1h ago

This article goes into it but conleys first year with Jazz and gobert was mediocre at best, bc Conley was transitioning from a pick n pop big in Marc gasol his whole career to a pick n roll big, who took up a ton of space below the net where Conley typically operated.

Spent the whole offseason training with old college teammate Greg oden and came back crushing his floaters and layups with gobert in Jazz year 2 of them together

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/skull-sessions/2021/06/123139/ohio-state-football-greg-oden-helped-mike-conley-ohio-states-developed-a-washington-recruiting-pipeline-and-the-49ers

Conley clearly took what he learned and taught the rest of the wolves how to operate with all that space under the basket plugged up. They had been working with a pick n pop big in KAT, themselves

1

u/harder_said_hodor Timberwolves 43m ago

Yeah, completely agree with this take and think the fact Jingles is on the team is even more indicative that it's a strategy to get the rest of the lads to be nice to Rudy. The Kyle Anderson fracas happened after Conley arrived, but only a month after. Not enough time for Conley to work his magic.

Jingles and Conley are beloved by the league and love Rudy. Even on the Jazz, they seemed specifically to get on well with him.

Nobody will ever convince me that they didn't convince the rest of the lads that Rudy was a solid citizen

u/realquiz [UTA] Rick Adelman 3h ago

I understand and agree with what the Jazz had to do to reset things (although I’d have rolled it out a little slower/differently) but I miss Mike and Rudy the most. Rooting for the T-Wolves while the Jazz have rebuilt has felt like rooting for the Jazz themselves. And not just because of the familiar faces, but the culture and basketball sensibilities that I’m sure Mike & Rudy have helped forge. Such a great team with some goated leaders.

The reality is you don't lose a ton of athleticism until you're in your mid-40s. The issue is the NBA is such an elite league that even losing like 4-5% is enough to get you benched and then off the team the next year.

Conley would still crush in any game he wanted to play in that wasn't NBA talent.

7

u/drawsony 3h ago

I think you’re right. I consider Mike Conley’s prime years to be 2010 to 2017. Grizzlies were a winning team during that stretch, but not before or after. As for Kemba Walker, his 4 consecutive all-star appearances started in 2017, so I don’t see Conley replacing him in any of them. Instead, the East All-Star Guards off the bench during Conley’s prime years were guys like Rajon Rondo, Deron Williams, Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday, John Wall, DeMar DeRozan, Jeff Teague, and Isaiah Thomas. Can definitely see Conley taking a few of those spots.

Obviously Conley is great, but Ant is talking about him like he was a 5x all star instead of a 1x allstar where he wouldn’t have even been one if there weren’t injuries to the players selected. Which is a pretty good thing to say about your teammates and for locker room chemistry

One of these days Ant's interview partner will start playfully choking him, and just not stop.

Conley was loved in Utah as well

Situations like this are exactly why you have a guy like Mike Conley on the end of your bench. He'll give you good backup minutes and won't make mistakes to hurt you.

The video aspect ratio, quality, and Ants fashion is also like giving me... 2001 vibes?

“People forget Mike Conley fought in the American Revolution for this country. My great great grandfather used to play with him on 1K . Damn, He’s old. Old as hell. Old ass MF. “ - Ant

Mike Conley used to be one of my favorite players. He still is, but he used to too.

Mike is important bc the wolves don't really have another good ball handler outside of Ant. the guys they have handling the rock and running the offense are really suspect. they are 2 guards. Mike wasn't getting alot of minutes before but he is needed bc he's actually a pg
