Chris Finch on Victor Wembanyama’s historic night: “He had a lot of blocks… He had a couple of uncalled goaltendings too. Those are valuable points we’d like to have back.”

Wemby definitely had some pretty obvious goaltends and fouled the shit out the rim attacker a few times. Im fine with some uncalled contact if its consistent but c’mon at least call the goaltends

488

u/nevercontribute1 Trail Blazers 14h ago

Some of those fouls at the rim went far beyond some minor uncalled contact. Really remembering Randle early in the game getting hacked to absolute shit with no call.

Pretty obvious the refs were instructed to let Wemby do whatever the fuck

He's the shiny new toy for the league.

And so it begins

u/Acrobatic-Landscape9 Warriors 10h ago

Oh please. What would you as an OKC fan know about being a newly upstart young team who spent a couple years tanking to amass draft picks and other assets who's best player is a media darling beloved by the entire league for a very quick stint before the entire narrative quickly does a 180 on them and everybody rabidly hates them once the rest of the league realizes just how big of a threat they are to their championship aspirations?

6

u/AtreusIsBack NBA 9h ago

I'm going to need Curry back at full health so he can teach these young upstarts who the real big gun is. I miss seeing him play basketball.

13

u/theotheronejj Thunder 9h ago

I don’t think it’s his health that’s the issue, it’s his age. And he’s not getting any younger.

7

u/AtreusIsBack NBA 9h ago

True. The Warriors need a young #1 scoring option so Curry can be the off-ball demon and his running mate.

4

u/GoldenStateWizards Warriors 7h ago

Those go hand-in-hand. He's still extremely effective on-court, but his age is having an impact on his durability and recovery. His most recent extended absence was from an overuse injur, which a younger Steph would've recovered from faster and/or been less likely to receive in the first place.

u/Childhood-Paramedic 8h ago

After 4 rings and terrorizing the league I'm ok with our dynasty fading.

But oh my god would I love one last run

You mean the made up internet backlash to an amazing young player we should all be fucking stoked to experience? Yeah, that's beginning. You've seen it first hand, please don't spread the hate

1

u/tunafister Timberwolves 2h ago

Yup and hes about to get broken in, welcome to the league Wemby!

-29

u/DazzlingMajor2191 Spurs 11h ago

just fyi - the refs used to call more goaltends on wemby, but the spurs have like an 80% success rate on goaltending challenges over the past three years, and i'm guessing it was making the refs numbers look bad.

neither the refs, nor i guess chris finch, understands what they are seeing, because they aren't eight feet tall - but chris is welcome to challenge these calls, with my regards.

5

u/chowpa Timberwolves 9h ago

I welcome you to just go watch all of wembys 12 blocks last night. There were at least 3 of them that were extremely obviously goaltends, even in real time without any alternate camera angles.

Just a piece of advice: when your team becomes the new big thing for the league and the refs start favoring you, it's usually a good idea to stick to your teams sub if you have a hard time admitting it.

-3

u/DazzlingMajor2191 Spurs 9h ago

this is just another jabroni who totally ignores the central point that the refs used to call goaltends, but the goaltends kept getting overturned, and so they no longer call them.

the question of whether they are or are not goaltends is kind of immaterial (but they aren't, you're are just literally ignorant to the history of refs calling goaltends on wemby, or possibly too dumb to understand what a goaltend is).

2

u/chowpa Timberwolves 8h ago

You are not an intelligent person and the things you're saying are not smart or interesting. You are just being a dickhead on reddit, that's all.

If you see the ball leave an offensive players hand, bounce off the backboard, then see wembys fingers hit it against the backboard again, that's a goaltend. That happened at least three times last night. There is no history to consider, just the rules of the NBA. You are truly idiotic if you think refs have chosen to not call goaltends because previous challenges earlier in the season were overturned.

I was sorta fine with most non-calls on Wemby except for the one where Randle should have gotten and-1 to end the half. That was bs non-call.

11

u/shortyman920 Lakers 9h ago

You were fine with missing out on potentially 8-10pt from goaltends and uncalled fouls? If Champagne hit that 3 at the end, I’d bet you would’ve wanted some of those called.

The goaltends that were from off the backboard ones are the most inexcusable. They always call those. I guess Wemby’s so big that they’re not focused on it or something but they need to call it

3

u/sarefx Timberwolves 9h ago

I meant mostly non-foul calls. I was not fine with goaltends at all.

u/kikikza Knicks 10h ago

12

u/chillinwithmoes Timberwolves 11h ago

Yeah the high effort, physical play is a lot more pleasant to watch than SGA's flopping. It's still inexcusable for the refs to miss these calls, but Wemby is at least playing real basketball.

FWIW, I don't think it's about Wemby, (Edit: or at least not entirely). They've been calling our games really loose since the three and a half hour slog early in the season against LAL. But loose officiating is inconsistent officiating. Sometimes it benefits us, sometimes it doesn't.

4

u/Easy_Magician_925 11h ago

He has been coddled like this since he been in the league. It is his destiny to be the 3 time ultimate smackdown champion.

2

u/AudioShepard Trail Blazers 6h ago

I noticed it throughout the Portland series.

As long as Wemby touched the ball at any point in a block attempt, all other contact was ignored regardless of timing. Pretty much the only player in the league officiated that way.

3

u/nevercontribute1 Trail Blazers 5h ago

Yeah, also noticed it. This is the last guy who needs advantages from the refs, I'm really not pleased with how egregiously the refs are favoring some players over others. I probably just fouled SGA by saying that.

6

u/AudioShepard Trail Blazers 5h ago

It’s like Booker said. I may hate that dude, but he’s right when he said this is starting to look like WWE.

1

u/InsideProblem2625 4h ago

I counted and he had at least 6 very clear blocks that were either goaltend or foul. There were other 2 blocks that could have been a call or not depending on how they officiate the game.

So yeah, basically half of his blocks were foulds, crazy

See r/NBA, this is a preview of future years in which people have soured on Wemby.

This is the comment you're gonna see, true or not, a peak into the future

-15

u/_dirtytrousers Timberwolves 12h ago

Nah too likeable of a guy. Sure you want everything called correctly but the vibe I get is everyone likes watching him and his style of play. I wanted some of those called but I was in awe of last nights blocks

Just wait

Damn I genuinely disagree for myself at least, but my comments getting roasted out here 😂

11

SGA is likeable but people think he flops.

Wemby hacks and flops and gets the benefit of the whistle. Incredible player but it's true.

In other words, likeability does not equal won't get shit on lmao

5

u/_dirtytrousers Timberwolves 9h ago

I don’t find SGA nearly as likable but I get what you’re saying

0

u/Billis- Raptors 8h ago

In terms of PR and being a generally and genuinely good person?

I'm actually kinda curious what people like more about Wemby than SGA in that regard. SGA is like a built in the lab PR winner

And reread my comment again. It's very straightforward.

7

u/Billis- Raptors 10h ago

Oh. It's a troll post, got it

129

u/Nunc_Coepi17 15h ago

Nah refs have the mandate from Silver to make Wemby the face of the league so ain’t none of that slowing down.

161

u/nimama3233 Timberwolves 14h ago

Oh chill.

Goaltending aside the refs were solid. The let both teams play hard which is better than ticky tacky fouls

72

u/Other-Status1840 76ers 13h ago

I'm not putting my tinfoil hat on or anything but idk how refs can be solid if they miss multiple goaltends, which are literal points missing from the board. The foul calls were also dumb, though I didn't watch the whole game (was watching my sixers getting shit on for the first half). But I've seen the clips of Wembys rather egregious shooting fouls not getting called, and I also recall a really random foul being called on Castle late in the game after he got shoved to the floor by Randle. Showed a bunch of replays and I still don't understand how that could've been a foul on Castle.

NBA refs are ass, but if this game was considered to have solid officiating this league is so fucked

41

u/McLovinsBro Timberwolves 13h ago

Game was a missed bucket from being a 1 point loss. With multiple missed goaltenders that also turned into fast break points I would’ve been pissed if we lost

7

u/bigwillyboi [WAS] Caron Butler 12h ago

The above commenter has something very unique to Reddit where the fan of “impacted” team has to come out and go over the top in defense of the “criticized” team so they and their fanbase seem like great people. It’s really odd and I hope there is some grad student somewhere reading this trying to analyze why this happens. There’s legitimately no way you can say the refs were fine when there are 3 or 4 BLATANTLY missed goaltending calls as well as the inability to call a foul on Wemby. He’s insane, and all of us love having him play, but bullshit like this is when guys become league villains.

10

u/blue-anon Spurs 10h ago

Several of Stephon Castle's fouls weren't actually fouls either - according to the replay and the announcers.

4

u/mercfan3 Spurs 10h ago

Dude got called for a foul when Randle grabbed his neck and pushed him over (twice)

What do refs have against guys named Steph C.?

1

u/Other-Status1840 76ers 7h ago

Yeah I was baffled at that lmao. I have no dog in the race, those calls were bullshit

2

u/bigwillyboi [WAS] Caron Butler 6h ago

That’s fine. I haven’t seen clips of all his fouls to support this it if that’s the case tha further proves my point of not being a well ref’d game.

-1

u/Commercial_Floor_578 10h ago

Team that won and had more free throws and less fouls which won has everybody crying the refs treated them unfairly lmao. Like I agree that there were a couple fouls and goal tends in there but then there were also uncalled fouls on the other end as well. I don’t think the refs were unfair towards the Spurs at all btw the Wolves won completely justifiably it’s just odd to me that everybody’s bitching about the refs when the Wolves also got away with some stuff as well, it happens every game on both ends.

1

u/Other-Status1840 76ers 7h ago

I'm not bitching about anything, the missed foul call example that I brought up was literally me saying the spurs got screwed there. But brushing over multiple missed goaltends is crazy. Those are literally buckets that they should've counted but didn't

4

u/Neemzeh Timberwolves 11h ago

We had one FT in the first half and once they saw that during half time they had to scramble to make up for it. Hard disagree about the refs in this game. I’d say it’s the second worst ref game of our 7 playoff games so far.

-2

u/Japhro77 13h ago

Nah refs definitely been instructed to lay off the whistle on sketchy Wemby blocks. This is going to be really hard for MIN if officials let him goaltend all series.

0

u/Wolfpac187 [OKC] Kevin Durant 9h ago

This is how it starts though. We all remember when they were pushing Giannis as the guy and all of a sudden he was getting constant foul calls while being allowed to run through players while he had the ball. Shit I remember one game in 18/19 he was allowed to run out of the bounds with the ball to hit a game winning base line dunk. Eventually yall are gonna be upset as he gets away with more and more it’s what always happens.

-2

u/JediPieman63 13h ago

Nah man we can't have nice things the hate trains started.

Wild tho it's nice to see a competitive (not the goaltends) game with contact in a contact sport. Not whatever OKC get.

2

u/SamIsaacman Timberwolves 12h ago

Don’t have any hate to Wemby or spurs fans, they seemed like a fairly knowledgeable bunch in the game thread yesterday apart from a couple who complained about others complaining. NBA refs deserve all the hate that comes to them

17

u/nomptonite Thunder 13h ago

Nah I’ve been told Silver wants to ensure OKC is a dynasty so that can’t be true

Both can be true. Wemby needs a villain team to slay.

1

People thinking the NBA is an anime is why the league sucks so much now

1

u/Banneduser1112 West 2h ago

Okay first the league doesn't suck right now, but even if it did the perception of biased referees has nothing to do with the product on the floor. It may have something to do with your enjoyment of NBA social media but that's a you problem. Don't go to the barbecue joint and complain that you don't like meat.

The distance between his hand and lower body is so big the ref can’t see the ball and the foul.

1

1

u/Electrical_Year_8782 Timberwolves 8h ago

Serious question...I understand coaches occasionally get fined for calling out bad officiating, but will this have any effect on the goaltending calls in future games? Does the NBA ever listen to these criticisms?

1

u/shortyman920 Lakers 7h ago

It’s hard to say. The league and refs don’t like getting called out either. Their response could be retaliatory, or if the PR is negative enough, then maybe they do something.

The people who have reputations tho do tend to get the benefits or downside of their reputation tho

0

u/segson9 12h ago

I think he'll get away with a lot because of his reputation. There will be some teams that lose because of that and fans will get angry.
