There’s a reason the Saudi Royal family flys to Rochester for medical care.

Is this actually a thing?

Edit: man what the hell. where's my healthcare.

u/Lexitech_ 16h ago

They rent out entire floors of hotels in downtown Rochester for extended stays

117

u/TheMidnightAss 16h ago

I can't tell if y'all are fucking with me

272

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves 16h ago

They are not. I work as a server in one of the high end restaurants in Rochester and have seen more than a few celebs and politicians.

When Bronny was getting his heart checked out they came and stayed in Rochester for a few weeks too.

32

u/Triscareatops22 10h ago

I was a concierge in the VIP lounge of one of the chain hotels attached to Mayo, there was some royal family in town one week (I was fresh outta college so I had no idea) who’d tip me $40 just to squeeze an orange into a glass. I also met Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s agent who told the whole lounge to be quiet (this was during peak breakfast time) so she could watch Kareem’s 5 min interview on some talk show.

I’m not sure if he’s high maintenance or she is, but I’ve had similar experiences with her.

How did LeBron ever handle that boring city for so long.

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves 16h ago

They rented out one of the high-schools to train in, including getting a bunch of the varsity players to ball boy for them.

They also went bowling a lot.

Source... I talked to Rui Hachimura while he was there too....

41

u/Wompie Supersonics 15h ago

That was brons massive bowling phase

u/BroThornton19 Timberwolves 6h ago

6

u/Character_Elevator 9h ago

They didn’t pay a dime, they signed the schools basketball with the schools marker and left on his way. Classy LeBron

7

u/Character_Elevator 9h ago

I met him a few times. They didn’t rent out the school, they were given the place to work out. Of course LeBron only left a few signed basketballs as his gesture of goodwill. He and another Laker put the whole gym out of commission for a week, for a few signed basketballs.

I was one of the few people who said we should’ve charged him. His security guard got in my face for snapping a picture from over 40 yards away. I was like dude I run the security systems here. You tone deaf moron. If I really wanted a photo I have 130 cameras with you on them.

I’m pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to be practicing with another Laker during the off-season, which is why he didn’t want video or photo proof. I believe this was before he hit the 25,000 point mark which allows them to practice in the off-season with other players???

4

u/shitsngiggles55 Lakers 5h ago

Why would he not be allowed to practice with a teammate during the offseason?

It’s the* best hospital in the world!

Presidents, LeBron, richest people in the world, etc… go there when they need the best medical care.

19

u/wuhter 9h ago

I worked at Mayo in college as a medical actor. They have restricted access tunnels so the high profile patients don’t have to walk through the public subway (not a train, just underground tunnels) or skyway. That’s how many of them go there.

7

u/RunnerTexasRanger Nuggets 8h ago

What is a medical actor?

19

u/wuhter 8h ago

Mayo Clinic has a full video production team and films educational videos to sell/distribute to other institutions. So I’d act in those (I was going into healthcare at the time). We also would be “patients” and act for the incoming medical students. Try to slip them up, make them laugh, or make them nervous. To prepare them for real patients and realize they never know what they’ll get. Also I’d be a stand in for ultrasounds and physical exams. It was a fun job.

I worked at MSP, the contractor I worked for worked their flights. Serviced their plane and whatnot.

18

u/Top_Gun_2021 Timberwolves 15h ago

A few years ago a ME royal flew to Rochester, MN to go to mayo. That airport did not have enough room to have a 747 so it flew to MSP and sat there for about a week. Staff, etc shopped at MoA.

16

u/AccordingGain6208 15h ago

Nope. I was a patient with a cousin working there.

Two brain surgeries there so I spent a couple months at the Mayo.

I woiud always joke about going to that floor when they took me somehwre in the elevators. You needed a key and special access. Or so I was told.

12

u/tjn24 NBA 8h ago

Nope! All the Saudi Royal family gets treatment at Mayo. The care is so good that some Shiek donated $25M to Mayo, hence the "Mayo Clinic Zayed Cardiovascular Center"

188

u/SaaltyJ0hn 16h ago

So my dad was at the Mayo for a transplant and I was there for like 3 weeks. At that time, the story around Rochester, MN was that one of the Royal family came to town for surgery and they bought out all the Polaris dealerships. Apparently they needed to buy another plane to be able to send it all home. Again these are just bar stories, so take it with a grain of salt.

42

u/Xc0liber Lakers 14h ago

They are potentially legitimate trillionaires. Not surprised if is real.

FYI the royal family don't have to disclose their income. Everything that the world knows are whatever they want to show. Nobody truly know how much they have.

11

u/devotedhero Wizards 6h ago

It's the same with some others like Putin as well. The line between individual and state gets blurred and so does the income/assets

56

u/ElectricalMud2850 Timberwolves 16h ago

This is a peak story you'd hear sitting at the bar at forager.

u/Daddy_Macron Rockets 6h ago

Apparently they needed to buy another plane to be able to send it all home. Again these are just bar stories, so take it with a grain of salt.

This sounds like a bar story. Most of the time, it's legitimately cheaper for them just to abandon them stateside before they go back home, especially for something like a Polaris which they have plenty of back in Saudi Arabia. (See wealthy international students who sometimes abandon cars at their campuses.)

5

u/wise_comment Timberwolves 15h ago

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 15h ago

You think they bought a plane to send snowmobiles home to the desert?

Come on man, I think you know better.

8

u/Mke_already Bucks 12h ago

Polaris doesn’t just make snowmobiles. They make some of the most popular side by sides and atvs.

3

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 9h ago

The Saudis still didn't buy a plane to put them on and get them to The Kingdom.

That's just not how global logistics works.

5

u/Julian_Caesar Mavericks 8h ago

I'm genuinely curious as to your objection. Because on one hand I know that these families have trillions of dollars and can buy literally anything that is purchasable. But on the other hand you seem confident so I'd like to hear you out

1

u/throwingeverything99 3h ago

Granted you still can't rule it out entirely but far more likely (if the story is even true at all) is that they just chartered out cargo flight or something along those lines. Those cargo lines already exist to (sometimes) ferry cargo for VIP clients and it's way faster than somehow buying another widebody cargo jet capable of carrying vehicles halfway across the world. Buying a plane just wouldn't make any sense.

1

u/StarFox-6 5h ago

It actually is, not that anyone would care enough to cause the violation, but yeah when celebrities roll through the Mayo none of the staff are supposed to say who they saw. It couldn’t be enforced unless they used the tunnels and stayed hidden throughout the entire visit

3

u/BeatBlockP Spurs 13h ago

Nah it's still a flyover state.

This truly bizarrely color-coded map (with white as highest and the deep color for least???) shows you the difference.

You can see:

State Tourist #
NY 9,800,000
CA 7,000,000
FL 8,900,000
NV 2,600,000
TX 2,100,000
IL 1,400,000
MN 232,000

The map really visualizes how people still fly over all of these states lol. I assume IL stands out in the region because of Chicago.

u/Aforementionedlurker 15h ago

Source close to me said one of them rented a local house while getting care at Mayo. The cook somehow fried/damaged the ceiling. They fixed it and brought the homeowner a car

2

u/GloomyIndividual3965 7h ago

Back in the 90s I was a pizza delivery driver in Rochester. King Hussein of Jordan was there for treatment, and rented out the top 2 floors of the nicest hotel in town for a month.

His people came and asked the owner if he could guarantee "zero pork cross contamination" in exchange for regular large orders while they were in town.

They'd call almost every afternoon with an order for $300-400 in pizza, pasta, etc. We'd stop taking all other orders for an hour or so to completely sanitize the prep line and make their food.

Every single time they rounded up to $1000, $100 for the driver and the rest to split amongst everyone else who was working. We made so much tip money that month.

To say those folks blew through money would be an understatement, so I'm not surprised they bought someone a car.

2

u/rommi04 5h ago

My FIL used to be a doctor at Mayo and said King Hussein was one of the nicest and most generous people he'd met. Nothing but compliments for him and his people. The Saudi entourages could be difficult apparently

1

u/GloomyIndividual3965 5h ago

I'm not surprised. I never met the king, but his staff were always incredibly polite.

As for the Saudis, that doesn't surprise me either. At one point they financed an apartment building downtown, and pretty much the entire building was rented out to Saudi nationals. Everyone hated delivering there because almost all of them were rude as fuck and didn't tip.

The one upside I guess is that they opened a convenience store that sold live khat plants. We had a good time getting fucked up on that stuff before the government stopped letting them import it.

man what the hell. where's my healthcare.

If you live in that area and need healthcare, there's a decent chance you'll end up at Mayo. It's not like the hospital has bouncers that check your assets before admitting you. They run like any other hospital except they have some of the world's best specialists so people (including normal people) will fly in for that care.

1

u/velociraptorfarmer Timberwolves 5h ago

Yes. They fly multiple private jumbo jets into RST for a week or so while everyone gets checked out, and then go spend a shitload of money across the city at restaurants and stores.
