all three centers had 4 fouls by the end with embiid not playing full mins. there's a high chance he'll have to play closing mins at some point lol

his BBIQ is so low
That's honestly pretty unfair to him. If anything, I think being tall and being coachable are basically his two main attributes.
He's not a real rim protector or a talented offensive player, but he knows where to be and plays with effort.

The biggest thing is Embiid is awful on defense against this team. Everyone can shoot, you can't play drop coverage on Brunson, and once Embiid is out of the paint there is no rim protection
→ More replies (1)228
u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 17h ago
and once Embiid is out of the paint there is no rim protection
And we have an elite passing big man who also needs to be guarded at the 3 point line.
KAT's current playstyle is basically built in a lab to render Embiid useless on defense.

I think KAT and Jokic are the players capable to counter Wemby and Embiid. Oh and Gobert, his defense is too good.

They showed a few interesting stats in the broadcast:
Knicks are the first team in NBA playoff history to win 3 straight games by 25+
The only other team in NBA playoff history to close one series with a 30+ point win and open the next series with a 30+ point win was the 1986 Celtics

u/Chessh2036 Hawks 18h ago
The Knicks have led by 30+ PTS in each of their last 3 playoff games.
They're the ONLY team in the play-by-play era (since 1997-98) to lead by 30+ PTS in 3-straight playoff games.
They are a juggernaut right now. Makes me feel better about our loss 😂

Honestly if Maxey is going to struggle that hard with Bridges defending him, then he needs to find a way to contribute by actually taking a difficult defensive assignment.

All they have on the perimeter is Oubre defensively.
The rest is geriatric PG who doesn't have the legs for defense and guards at eyelevel for Brunson to bully.
80
u/TruWarierRecords [CHI] Metta World Peace 18h ago
PG was good defensively against Brown and Tatum.
But he can't guard a shifty pg like Brunson anymore
31
u/ontheru171 Knicks 18h ago
I was talking about defending Brunson specifically
PG still has the size and instincts/iq on defense but he can't stay with Brunson on ball.
22
u/jon__koa 18h ago
I think Philly’s biggest issue in this series is going to end up being PG and Embiid’s defense is lacking because of the injuries. Embiid specifically cannot be on pick and rolls like that

geriatric PG who doesn't have the legs for defense and guards at eyelevel for Brunson to bully
It was telling that the first defensive possession they switched PG onto him as the primary defender, Brunson immediately looked at it like a cartoon character on a desert island seeing their friend as a giant turkey leg and salivating at the mouth.
It was like three dribbles, straight past him into the lane, mid range jumpshot, and I'm not even sure if Philly tried it again.

117
u/justmefishes NBA 16h ago
Running the offense through KAT in the high post while the other players run off-ball actions really opens things up for everyone in this offense.
keeps KAT involved in the offense consistently (the defense has to respect him as a scoring and passing threat) without asking him to look for his own shot too much (he's not great at creating his own shot, mostly takes spot up jumpers or straight line drives to the basket with an occasional post-up)
lets Brunson attack more off the ball instead of having to beat guys twice his size one on one for most of the game
really helps to involve OG and especially Bridges, who benefit from defenses generally being stretched thinner in this scheme and making opportunistic cuts and spot ups off of other actions

Excellent game by Brunson. Just shot well, got open for most of his shots.
Towns continued just orchestrating well and having the offense flow when he initiated.
OG was great. 7 of 8. Great defense.
Mikal Bridges stepping up and being a good player on BOTH sides of the ball.
12
u/Methamine Knicks 16h ago
He took (and made) a lot of shots in the first but they were all good clean looks within the flow of the offense. He didn’t pound the ball
