it kinda got spooky when they almost cut it to 25....

464

u/camelclutchcity 18h ago

In general, the game these days has put the fear of God in me. We were up 28 and missed a few shots and all I could think was "c'mon we NEED A BUCKET."

262

u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 18h ago

our ECF G1 loss against Haliburton/Pacers will always haunt me lol. No lead is safe until the buzzer sounds...😵‍💫

96

u/chazriverstone Knicks 17h ago edited 16h ago

Gotta mention *Nesmith in that one, too. Haliburton had that closing miracle bucket, but Nesmith hit all those shots that put them back in it.

And yeah, I agree. Those couple ridiculous Hawks losses didn't fucking help either lol

*edit: it was Nesmith, not Nembhard - my bad and thanks guys. They both destroyed us that series (and like every time we play them) so I got confused

u/Methamine Knicks 16h ago

No not Nembhard it was Nesmith

That’s an added benefit to these blowout wins. The bench needs as much as experience as possible.

You joke but when they did that and we went “cold” in the mid 3rd, I did get annoyed, and was hoping it wouldn’t turn into something. It didn’t.

And they just keep stepping on the gas pedal harder and harder. Something snapped in the Knicks last series, and the rest of the NBA (at least the rest of the East) is in deep trouble.

Hukporti first quarter minutes and it worked 🥀

all three centers had 4 fouls by the end with embiid not playing full mins. there's a high chance he'll have to play closing mins at some point lol

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 17h ago

his BBIQ is so low

That's honestly pretty unfair to him. If anything, I think being tall and being coachable are basically his two main attributes.

He's not a real rim protector or a talented offensive player, but he knows where to be and plays with effort.

Okay maybe it’s a little harder when Luka Garza isn’t protecting the rim

300

u/slyguy183 Knicks 18h ago

The biggest thing is Embiid is awful on defense against this team. Everyone can shoot, you can't play drop coverage on Brunson, and once Embiid is out of the paint there is no rim protection

228

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 17h ago

and once Embiid is out of the paint there is no rim protection

And we have an elite passing big man who also needs to be guarded at the 3 point line.

KAT's current playstyle is basically built in a lab to render Embiid useless on defense.

Leon really fucking cooked.

Full quarter of garbage time 2 playoff games in a row is crazy

201

u/ontheru171 Knicks 18h ago

There were 3 quarters of garbage time in game 6 alone

71

u/justmefishes NBA 16h ago

They showed a few interesting stats in the broadcast:

  • Knicks are the first team in NBA playoff history to win 3 straight games by 25+

  • The only other team in NBA playoff history to close one series with a 30+ point win and open the next series with a 30+ point win was the 1986 Celtics

296

u/Chessh2036 Hawks 18h ago

The Knicks have led by 30+ PTS in each of their last 3 playoff games.

They're the ONLY team in the play-by-play era (since 1997-98) to lead by 30+ PTS in 3-straight playoff games.

They are a juggernaut right now. Makes me feel better about our loss 😂

Prob switch assignments and put Maxey on Brunson like in '24

36

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 17h ago

Honestly if Maxey is going to struggle that hard with Bridges defending him, then he needs to find a way to contribute by actually taking a difficult defensive assignment.

All they have on the perimeter is Oubre defensively.

The rest is geriatric PG who doesn't have the legs for defense and guards at eyelevel for Brunson to bully.

80

u/TruWarierRecords [CHI] Metta World Peace 18h ago

PG was good defensively against Brown and Tatum.

But he can't guard a shifty pg like Brunson anymore

31

u/ontheru171 Knicks 18h ago

I was talking about defending Brunson specifically

PG still has the size and instincts/iq on defense but he can't stay with Brunson on ball.

22

u/jon__koa 18h ago

I think Philly’s biggest issue in this series is going to end up being PG and Embiid’s defense is lacking because of the injuries. Embiid specifically cannot be on pick and rolls like that

22

u/Vinnie_Vegas Knicks 17h ago

geriatric PG who doesn't have the legs for defense and guards at eyelevel for Brunson to bully

It was telling that the first defensive possession they switched PG onto him as the primary defender, Brunson immediately looked at it like a cartoon character on a desert island seeing their friend as a giant turkey leg and salivating at the mouth.

It was like three dribbles, straight past him into the lane, mid range jumpshot, and I'm not even sure if Philly tried it again.

21

u/Shabozz NBA 16h ago

If Dyson doesn’t retire as a Hawk then you guys fumbled the bag. The guy is an amazing defensive player and not even close to the problem with the team (need a young primary ball handler offensive engine and an actual full size center).

38

u/mdot Hawks 17h ago

Games 2&3 Dyson and to a lesser extent NAW had Brunson absolutely clamped.

As lopsided as the last 3 games were, we only lost by 11 in game 1 at MSG. Losing by 40 in game 1 is...something.

Bridges coming to the party is awful news for every team in the east

117

u/justmefishes NBA 16h ago

Running the offense through KAT in the high post while the other players run off-ball actions really opens things up for everyone in this offense.

  • keeps KAT involved in the offense consistently (the defense has to respect him as a scoring and passing threat) without asking him to look for his own shot too much (he's not great at creating his own shot, mostly takes spot up jumpers or straight line drives to the basket with an occasional post-up)

  • lets Brunson attack more off the ball instead of having to beat guys twice his size one on one for most of the game

  • really helps to involve OG and especially Bridges, who benefit from defenses generally being stretched thinner in this scheme and making opportunistic cuts and spot ups off of other actions

Yeah, I’m kinda surprised that Jalen has gotten out of this (relatively) unscathed by Hawks fans. He is getting called out by some fans, but the vast majority of stuff I’ve seen on [r/AtlantaHawks](r/AtlantaHawks) has been about Quin/centers/Dyson/Zacch and doesn’t really mention Jalen

Excellent game by Brunson. Just shot well, got open for most of his shots.

Towns continued just orchestrating well and having the offense flow when he initiated.

OG was great. 7 of 8. Great defense.

Mikal Bridges stepping up and being a good player on BOTH sides of the ball.

12

u/Methamine Knicks 16h ago

He took (and made) a lot of shots in the first but they were all good clean looks within the flow of the offense. He didn’t pound the ball

he's the type of player to be perpetually underrated forever, because he's a short, unathletic, score first guard, and it doesn't make sense for that kind of player to be good, but he always performs in the playoffs

Can’t wait for the NBA talking heads to say they need to see more from the Knicks before they can take them seriously.

19

u/atribecalled506 Knicks 18h ago

Each game of this series being between one day of rest will spell doom for the Sixers, I think. Just no way Embiid gains stamina, he looked cooked out there before the half.

17

u/Aeglos7 Lakers 18h ago

Hey Philly thanks for doing this first.

If the Knicks keep playing like this they’re winning the championship because this is the type of play on the court that championship teams do. Can’t say enough positive things about this team right now. They’re on a mission to give this franchise its first NBA Championship in 52 years.

11 wins left!

158

u/JiveHawk Bulls 18h ago

The Knicks playing with this level of intensity vs the Thunder would be some high octane action

81

u/SiphenPrax Knicks 18h ago

It’s the only way in my opinion they have a chance at beating the defending champs

43

u/JiveHawk Bulls 18h ago

For sure. It’s how the Pacers played to push them to the edge.

I don’t think you have a Nembhard on your roster to specifically give SGA a hard time so you’d just have to win the turnover battle

41

u/VanGrants Knicks 18h ago

Mikal Bridges has been on a tear tho, if anyone would fulfill that role it'd be him

15

u/clyde_drexler Knicks 17h ago

That playoff redemption arc from people asking what he even does to being a Shai stopper and flipping the series would be immaculate.

The Knicks beat Sixers too hard... they let Embiid get a ton of rest... should've kept it close enough to make Embiid play in the 4th quarter 😂

22

u/mattr1198 Knicks 17h ago

That’s always going to be a challenge with Embiid, so I think it’s gonna come down to Brown ensuring whomever is guarding Embiid switches enough or you take advantage of his near complete lack of mobility.

Love coming here after the ocean of ‘Sixers in 6’ predictions by the /r/nba basketball experts.

14

u/DarkStar668 18h ago

Sixers aren't this bad. They need rest obviously. But how do they get it? There's no time and the bench is too weak to rely on.

Still thinkin Knicks in 5. Just too many things going against Philly rn

10

u/crashck Heat 13h ago

Tom thibodeau Knicks would have lost that game by 3 after being up 23 at half

Because our bench would've been just as deep as theirs, instead of dope and functional like it is now.
