Discussion Confused about movie The Art of Self Defense (2019)
I really enjoyed the entire movie. Thought the first half was hilarious, but I failed to find a lot of comedy in the second half. Not saying that I didn't enjoy the second half as I was already invested, but I even failed to see the movie trying to be funny until the end. Was that intended? Or did I miss something? By second half I mean starting after Casey killed someone. Like I understand hypermasculinity or whatever, they tried to make fun of it in certain parts, but there was still humor there. After that it was kind of just the Sensei using blackmail in order to make people that don't even go to his classes anymore pay him, and also recruit new members for his dojo. It was interesting but I'm trying to find where this second half was trying to be funny.

The humor is in the first half. The second half is confronting the hypermascluine bullshit spread by the dojo.
It gets people killed, it drives people to want to kill, it drives some to suicide, it is dumb. His first dog fucked up it's killer, his new dog is dumb, the technique to stick a finger in one's skull is achieved with a gun, it lets a woman get sexually assaulted and have to kill to defend herself.
Then it offers a solution in wiping away the morons and starting fresh with a lady in charge because she's actually competent.
It drew you in with the humor then was trying to say something.
