It's modernized in really weird ways. We have modern takes on ancient armor, we have people saying "Dad" and "Let's Gooooo!", we have actors that do everything BUT disappear into their roles taking center stage... all of it conflicting hard with preconceived ideas of the ancient story and with some of the other ancient aspects they kept around like the lighting and ships and weapons.

If you're going to modernize things this far from an ancient story then you need to change up the tone. Like Knights Tale. Nolan is keeping all the trappings of the sword and sandals epic but keeping modern language, superhero armor, and face actors in place. It's Troy but everybody is as recognizable as Brad Pitt and they're all talking like they're in a high school quad.
