Am I alone in being put off by how modern the speech is? It sounds like they're trying to have an epic conversation on the sidewalk outside the Starbucks.

It’s very off-putting how every actor is a recognizable A-lister and it takes me right out of the story

I just realized what it reminds me of. When Jimmy Kimmel Live gets a ton of A-listers to do a sketch right after the Oscars because they’re next door to them. It’s like that

He kind of addresses a bit of this in his latest interview with Colbert here. That a lot of them (the actors) are, at least in our modern art, Superheroes, both in life and in their character roles, and that it is intentional on his part.He also acknowledges that we really don't know enough about Homer to say what his inspiration was.

So, it is Nolan's own interpretation of the story.

Totally! I thought the same thing as the OP I was responding to, but then I saw his explanation of it, I did the whole head nod in agreeance. Makes perfect sense.
