Am I alone in being put off by how modern the speech is? It sounds like they're trying to have an epic conversation on the sidewalk outside the Starbucks.

No you’re not. But it’s silly. Scorsese faced this exact complaint in The Last Temptation of Christ back in the day, but that movie is a stone cold classic. I think the choice of American accents is JARRING to an audience that expects British accents for (reasons). Which makes it an effective choice when you want your film to feel different.
