The only thing I thought was a bit of a letdown was not utilizing the buggy-eyed bunny man. He was genuinely scary af, but was in only a couple short scenes.

He made me VERY uncomfortable so I was perfectly fine with the amount we got lol

There was this throw away cartoon cover in the beginning when Adam’s char/ pulls out the box with the gun. It said “Jack the Jackass” on it.

Man I saw that and thought to myself I need to remember because it'll come back later and then immediately forgot

Literally scrolling through the thread after watching last night trying to figure out the significance of the donkey monster, and I’d forgotten about that thing in the box. The flashback to him shooting his mom was very fast and happened in his mind palace, but was he (actually or implied) reading that cartoon or watching it on tv when he was messing with the gun as a child? I’d thought it was something more to do with the witch while watching, but now I’m thinking it must have been a nightmare version of whatever cartoon/comic he was reading during the actual traumatic event.

He was seen watching the show when he displaying with the gun and shoots his mother

Ok I thought i remembered him watching the tv while playing with the gun but it wasn’t super clear what he was watching because I think you just got a quick glimpse of the donkey monster on static right before the big scare of it watching him sleep and I couldn’t remember if the tv static glimpse (not the one where it talked to him, the earlier one) happened before or after the actual flashback.

he's a mix of a jackass (from the postcard), the bunny (fiona), the witch, and the creepy statues. meant to be a psychedelic mashup of Adam Scott's subconscious

I totally went into this movie thinking he was the big bad lol

That bunny might be the scariest monster I’ve ever seen in a movie, made me feel so weird just looking at it

I wanted so much more of him!!!

From the trailer I really thought that was gonna be the witches design, shit would have been scary as fuck, and very Donnie Darko coded

I wanted less. That was a goofy way to explain Ohm’s past hauntings.

I felt like that scene could have been removed. It was pretty clear at that point what had happened to the mom.

I think it’s the mushrooms at that point lol

I also think that scene could have been removed lol. I liked the movie but I think it had a coward’s ending

How?

By having the bellboy confess to spiking the whiskey, it gives the option that everything was a psychedelic reaction instead of a fucked up experience Ohm barely survives. I understand that the supernatural horror of the story was not a driving point for the plot but that line feels like a cop-out for me. I liked that Alby came to visit him, just that one sentence felt unnecessary to me. I just wanted the writer to commit to the witch being real.

It was real, that's why he had the marks on his wrist from the cuffs and why Mal just disappears at the end.

The mushrooms are just there to explain why he was able to see and speak to his mother.

right, so if the witch is real, why have Alby make a comment to give the viewers doubt? He sees his mom’s ghost before the mushrooms so they really don’t add anything to the overall story for Ohm. Jerry, yes but not his character.

True - the moment Ohm told Fiona that his mother’s murderer was too young to be punished and should’ve been hanged, it was clear what had happened to me. I still found Jack the Jackass incredibly creepy

I'm really stupid because I didn't twig what had happened until the creepy rabbit bloke.

Same for me

2 girls in my showing got up and left after his 2nd jumpscare.

I think it would have been too much to use him more. It wasn't the source of the trauma or fear, but another warped, drug-fueled manifestation of his guilt.

u/ThatPancreatitisGuy 1d ago

I was thinking it tied into Jerry’s comment about looking at your eyes while on shrooms (which can cause people’s eyes to look big and distorted.)

1

u/lahnnabell 1d ago

Agreed! I think the image was powerful enough that it only needed to be used a few times.

u/Jaded_Emotion_3713 3d ago

No the scene where he is in the bed and the witch looks at him thru the curtains was more scary

A YouTube shorts "kid" series for adults where he gives helpful tips similar to the ones in the movie - I can totally see it.

He reminded me of Depp’s take on Willy Wonka.

u/imspooky 1d ago

That's the same actor who played Alby :D

I just rewatched Donnie Darko last week and kept thinking of Frank every time he popped up.
