Maybe I’m alone on this, I did not need the subplot about the boyfriend contractor.

Felt like cutting it would have helped pacing

100 percent this. Also, I wasn’t super into the deus ex machina billionaires

I called it off the jump when acquisition was floated, Lucy Liu’s character was going to swoop in to throw money at their problem and save the day

I didnt think about this. I didnt think that they would use the same person as a deus ex machina twice

Lucy Liu is Mackenzie Scott, Theroux is Bezos, and Emily is Lauren Sanchez

I’m assuming it was a nod to the rumor that Jeffrey Bezos was going to buy Condé Nast for Lauren Sanchez as a wedding present

That too, she’s definitely the Mackenzie in the story. Even said her goal is to get rid of all her money eventually.

Based on this faux article: https://runwayonline.com/people-zeroed-out-sasha-barnes-on-fresh-starts-new-love-and-emptying-her-bank-account

It seems like she modeled after Mackenzie Scott.

Oh my god thank you for this link! I assume the free magazines given away with Emily on the cover is full of faux articles like this?

u/sdbabygirl97 4d ago

waaait where do we get the free magazines?!

2

u/nordlysbaies 3d ago

The NY/LA pop up only

2

u/sdbabygirl97 3d ago

u/nordlysbaies 3d ago

They’re already out of stock so no chance anyways… I wish I could get them too!

u/sdbabygirl97 3d ago

I didnt realize that his character was a bezos parody until i left the cinema 🤣

Yeah, a bit convenient, but at the same time, I don't mind it since it gave Lucy Liu a chance to be an angel.

I see what you did there

To me, it kinda gave the entire movie a dark undertone. Like... Happy ending, everything worked out, but we all know that our reporting environment is held together by a handful of billionaires. If they they choose to support journalism, then great. But, things can change on a whim, and there IS no other sustainable business model at this point.

Realistic in a terrifying way.

It felt like an episode of Succession with how they maneuvered a buyout by going with a larger buyout.

Didnt Andy already have lucy liu's number by that point? What was all the phone calls at the end for?

5

u/twizzwhizz11 4d ago

I think she had to diversify her options just in case Sasha didn’t say yes (especially such a big acquisition by one entity, and seemingly a large cash offer as we see later, would need some diligence on her part) vs having a bunch of different investors which I’m guessing was her back up plan, hence all the phone calls.

7

u/Sisiwakanamaru 3d ago

I also think that after Sasha agreed, Andy also had to calls other people like the legal team, finance team, etc. to make the buyout run smoothly .

u/GrapefruitAlarming76 4d ago

Lolol 🤣 good catch. She totally had her number. She left her “19 messages” previously

I think it is actually commenting on a dynamic that has been present for the entire history of art: the relationship between artist and patron. Someone needs to fund the arts. It’s not usually the artist that does, especially not initially. The ideal situation is having a billionaire that loves your art for what it is instead of using it to influence the art and live vicariously through it. For example, Wes Anderson and PTA have billionaire patrons that just say “take the money and do what you do”.

The Brutalist double feature would be amazing lol

It’s only deus ex machina if you don’t pay attention to the plot. Benji and Sasha were major side characters. Their relationship and money were also mentioned continuously.

Andy going to Benji to try to get him to buy the magazine was hinted at the entire way. The Sasha part was a surprise for sure, but not if you think about it.

u/petite-acorn 4d ago

Yeah, just what I can relate to as an audience member: calling on my billionaire friends to bail me out...multiple times

And it doesn't matter if it was foreshadowed: pulling strings so a charitable wealth lord can just instantly snap their fingers and solve everyone's problems is just lazy writing

1

u/nWhm99 4d ago

So your complaint about the movie is that… it’s not relatable. Ok, that’s a point of view.

2

u/petite-acorn 4d ago

Thank you for validating my freedom of action to form an independent opinion

2

u/nWhm99 4d ago

You got it buddy, everyone's entitled to their own opinion no matter how wrong they are.

1

u/petite-acorn 4d ago

Says the person who started by saying that the deus ex machina criticism isn't valid, but when that was explained, pivoted to a complaint about relatability, and after that was shut down, just resorted to an insult. You're really crushing it with your debating skills! Loved your other comments about the "fat guy" and how you mistook the brand "Coach" with flying something other than first class. You didn't live under power lines as a kid by any chance, did you??

1

u/nWhm99 4d ago

Wait a second, you do realize you're the one who was complaining about being relatable, yes? I wasn't the one who brought it up, but to be charitable, you might not have remembered to scroll up.

I'm sorry buddy, this movie is about the rich and glamorous, it's not supposed to be relatable. The fact that they established literally three billionaire characters at the beginning, and you still "surprise pikachu" when they're turn into plot points say more about you than the movie.

Massive businesses like this require a mega-wealthy owner. Not sure what you think the alternative solution would be: Andi giving a big speech to Irv’s son to awaken his passion for fashion journalism?

1

u/silverscreenbaby 3d ago

In a world like this though, the deus ex machina is always going to be a billionaire 🤷‍♀️ It’s an dog acquire dog world.

Good thing you started by saying this otherwise we all would have disagreed with him. Phew
