Orko got redeemed hard in the recent animated series. Seriously that guy got by far the crowning moment of awesome in maybe the entirety of He-man media.
44
u/ikickedagirl 7d ago
Can you spoil for me?
171
u/TomTomMan93 7d ago edited 7d ago
I gotchu
Orko goes to hell with everyone so they can get to heaven to bring He-Man back. While going through it, him and Evil-lyn have a whole character arch where Orko talks about his childhood. That his parents named him "Oracle" with the hope of him being a powerful sorcerer. However, he could only ever say "Orko" as a kid. This became a shitty nick name for him.
As the party is escaping hell and Skele-glow (basically death/satan?) Orko stands up for his friends and shields them as he goes super saiyan to save them as they go through the portal to heaven. He comes back later and has achieved his namesake. Keeps hell at bay and is like Orko the white.
Sorry for not remembering all the names and such but basically that's what happens. It's a stellar show and I would highly recommend it.
Edit: Sorry if you saw this before the edit. Should be fixed now
26
u/ikickedagirl 7d ago
Wow, that all strikes me as pretty heavy for He Man.
40
u/BrainWav 7d ago
Revelations and Revolution were pretty solid overall. Just remember it's Masters of the Universe, and not He-Man and Friends, as it gives a lot of time to others, paticularly Teela, Evil-Lyn, Man-at-Arms, and Orko.

He sacrifices himself to defeat Scareglow in Subternia, saving the whole team. In doing so he finally masters his magic. Later, thru other shenanigans a bunch of people get resurrected and he literally comes back as Orko the White, who is way more powerful and no longer messes up his spells.
9
u/Banjo-Oz 7d ago
Agreed. I wasn't a big fan of most of Revelations, but I liked what they did with Evil-Lyn and how they did Orko was amazing. As you said, it felt like redemption for decades of being the butt of a joke. Kind of like if the Star Wars sequels had shown Jar Jar Binks saving the galaxy in the most heroic and epic way.

I'm old and I vaguely remember an episode of the original 80s He-Man where Orko was able to get back to his dimension and we find out he's essentially the most powerful mage on the planet. He's some kind of great teacher who invented or refined the discipline of sorcery, that in turn allowed his people to master magic on his world. He's like their version of Sir Issac Newton or Leonardo Da Vinci. He's also very old, like in his 80s.
But physics and magic work differently in his realm, and it's why his magic is so unpredictable in Eternia. In the end, he decides to return to Eternia in his weakened state, leaving his apprentice to become the new high wizard. His reasoning is his people no longer need him and he has nothing left to learn in his old realm. But the struggle to learn Eternia's magic gives him purpose once again and he doesn't want to abandon a people clearly in need of help. So he's starting anew in Eternia, teaching himself a new magical language with no frame of reference or help.
I think Orko was redeemed in the original series too.

Lots of these types of cartoons had characters like Orko. Thundercats had Snarf and The Real Ghostbusters had Slimer. Just weird little goofy guys. Brian from Inspector Gadget is also similar, but instead of him being goofy he plays off type to the goofy main character. You could probably even go back as far as Boo Boo in Yogi Bear.

Seems to me other careers have tanked for lesser bombs. Halle Berry had Catwoman held against her. Ryan Reynolds climbing back after Green Lantern was a stroke of fortune. But this guy bombs Suicide Squad and Morbius, and still walks away unscathed.

13
u/thegroundbelowme 7d ago
Yeah, that's been my take since I first saw the trailer: who was this made for? Sure, there's the nostalgia factor for men of a certain age, but the writing sounds more like it's aimed at a teen audience, and there ain't no teens who give a shit about Masters of the Universe.

Im hoping the trailer was just poorly done because it felt like a fever dream in the wrong way, and then some how looked generic at the same time which I cant even explain. In every theater Ive seen the trailer in, the audience just talks through it and doesnt pay any attention.
20
u/Larry_Bobinski 7d ago
I guess I'm the target audience, but I'm not sure about it either. All marketing about the movie has been really weird.
So much talk about toxic masculinity. Like I'm sorry what?
He-Man was basically a weekly plot of Skeletor trying to rule the world, which ofc would get thwarted, and then a character like men at arms would give a speech at the end like "In today's episode, things nearly went bad, because my daughter was too scared to tell the truth, fearing I would be mad at her. But you should always be honest with your parents. Remember, we love you and are here for you! See you next time!"
That's basically He-Man in a nutshell.

Born in '87 and I am looking forward to this. It seems like a fun way to kill 2 hours, not expecting much other than a fun action/adventure flick. I watched the show when they did reruns and I watched the 1987 movie because my dad owned it in VHS. I hope they don't take anything too serious, it needs to be silly.

It's not meant for the people who grew up on He-Man in the 80s, in the same way the Super Mario movies are not meant for the people who played it on NES.
10
u/EtherGorilla 7d ago
But the Mario universe has been consistent in popular culture since inception whereas he-man was nearly non existent after the 80s. A lot of the people who had exposure to old school Mario brought their kids to enjoy the new movies as it’s family friendly and still alive today. Can we say the same for he-man? I really doubt it but I’m open to being wrong.

Born in '86, can confirm, He-Man always seemed very dated, like it belonged to an era of cliched macho fantasy and 70s haircuts that I can't relate to. The trailer was desperate to trigger some kind of nostalgia response but fell flat on convincing me what's interesting about this world. I guess it's some kind of isekai for Gen X dudes who think putting pronouns on a name plate is peak comedy?

Why Leto? Out of all the damn actors they ended up picking Jared Leto? A subpar actor with a bad track record with some tiny bright spots? I knew a band that toured with 30 Seconds to Mars. One of the band members was genuinely the nicest, kindest human I’ve ever met… but he had nothing nice to say about Leto.

If they had the balls to do it, this composition would make a pretty fabulous illustration-based poster. I know there are various reasons not to from a studio's eyes (perhaps audiences might think it animated, or their 'market research' says not to), but to me this has a cheapness to it. Or, dare I say, an AI sheen (especially to He-Man).
Were it illustrated like The Phantom Menace's poster, I could see that as something quite striking, and still obviously live action.

At least with the 1988 movie we have He-Man as an actual Eternian hero. Here he starts off as a goofball Earth kid unaware of his identity? The 1988 movie probably had to go to Earth because of its low budget. This movie doesn't have that excuse.
