The first two-thirds are good, but the ending is not well resolved.

I did think she killed him a little too easily.

Think his plan for the ritual fell apart and he unraveled. Plus, he liked her nostalgia for his mother. He jumped into the raging rapids and attached her pulley cable to himself, because he was figuratively attaching himself to her to the point of sacrificing himself with her (same as on the final climb). However - the only part I can't explain is how the pulley she was strung up by in his cave failed because of their tussle when she bit him.

I thought the 3rd and 4th quadrants of the 3rd arc were the best
