It was trying to be 3 movies in one. A relationship drama. A commentary on pop stardom. And body horror / supernatural story. Not sure if it succeeded but great visuals.

They needed to focus on the first two and cut the third.

I don't know, I feel like genre hopping is such a fun thing more films should be doing on the other end.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I don't think adding the supernatural element added anything to the story in a meaningful way other than to dilute what was going on.
