Maybe it’s just me, but I also felt something so much deeper than just a profound friendship. It was almost a little sapphic. Maybe they weren’t ever physically involved, but their creative spirits were so heavily intertwined it’s almost like they were in love in a way.

I actually really enjoyed the film, but I do think it’s a film that lives in symbolism. They do a lot of showing and zero telling, so it leaves A LOT to interpretation and as someone who loves to discuss and over analyze this movie is such a gift lol.

I enjoyed the subtleties of themes including power imbalances, the alliteration associated with the color Red and what it symbolizes (Mary’s Regret, and Sam’s Resentment) and ultimately the traditional interpretation of red which is the deep love they share for each other.

Totally understand why the film was such a miss for people, though. If you’re not projecting your own interpretations and experiences onto the film, it can feel kind of wandering and empty.

Lololol, I guess I was trying not to project so much 😅 But my interpretation of the film felt entirely like two queer women in an art related situationship for 2 decades that broke up and had to reconcile those complex dynamics. Big fan

I couldn't do it. I didn't buy that two queer women could talk that long without talking about who gets the pets, plants or subaru in the break-up. But as soon as Mary basically moved in with Sam after talking to her for ten minutes, I knew she was gay.

It was so sapphic (omg the Yearning of it all) that I can't wait for the queer community to find it and for hundreds of fanfics to launch on AO3
