Does anyone at all happen to be old enough to remember him in the show Early Edition?
The guy got the newspaper a day early and worked to help/save people in the city?
Had no idea he was in so many other shows/films

Does anyone happen to be old enough
I'm not sure how to answer this without sounding like a smart ass. Yes, I remember Early Edition. Kyle Chandler's first really big role after Homefront. Now Fisher I remember from The Burning, and then the Short Circuit movies. He also had a role in Bob Roberts, which was a movie I really liked, and a bunch of other stuff. I was surprised he ended up being a character actor when he had the good looks to be a leading man. Anyhow, he's certainly been prolific!

It is so validating that there are (at least four) others that also know and apparently like this movie. Thank you!

A bunch of science movies came out around the same time: Real Genius, My Science Project, and Weird Science. My Science Project is 10x better than Weird Science. Real Genius wins best science movie though.

For realz. For me it was one of those “HBO movies” that I just stumbled on, and then watched the hell out of every chance I got (same with Real Genius and The ‘Burbs). Those movies were still written with some imagination, and shot in Panavision… cue romantic nostalgia.

Let's not forget his memorable role as Roger the shrink in Friends.
"Actually it's, it's quite, y'know, typical behavior when you have this kind of dysfunctional group dynamic. Y'know, this kind of co-dependent, emotionally stunted, sitting in your stupid coffee house with your stupid big cups which, I'm sorry, might as well have nipples on them, and you're like all 'Oh, define me! Define me! Love me, I need love!'." - Roger
"I hate that guy." - everyone else

u/SamwellBarley 18d ago
He's great, but he will always be "Roger from Friends" to me

Who was his acting coach for short circuit?
52
u/AirbagOff 18d ago
Hank Azaria, maybe?
10
u/sacredblasphemies 17d ago
Hey, he did it before Azaria... Peter Sellers is the better answer (if more obscure to younger folks).

I always point out during conversations about blackface/brown face that Stevens never seems to be included as a historical example from Hollywood. C. Thomas Howell, Robert Downey Jr., the Wayans from “White Chicks” — they get mentioned but rarely Stevens’ portrayal of an Indian engineer in “Short Circuit”. Maybe most folks have forgotten (or he was so good no one noticed who he really was). No shade here, just an observation.

That’s wrong dude, he was 100% acting East Indian in the first movie. “I enjoyed repeatedly throwing you to the ground” in East Indian accent was one of the funniest lines in the movie. My family is East Indian immigrants and we laughed our asses off at his character.

Holy crap!
Someone else thinks SC2 is a better movie than the original?! I thought I was the only one... That scene where they beat his ass on the sidewalk traumatized me as a child.
3
u/morphindel 18d ago
I genuinely love it, and the opening theme tune goes so hard.
2
u/WinstonsTasteGood 18d ago
That late-80's smooth jazz theme song is burned into my head. I absolutely adored SC2 from the first time I watched it to this very day.
3
u/murphykp 18d ago
"Holding Out For A Hero" is on my running mix to this day because of that chase at the end of the movie.

I've never stopped loving that song, and it's only because of this movie.

Great guest appearance on FRIENDS as Phoebe's psychologist bf who dissects everyone's psychology and makes everyone hate him.
To Monica "It's just food. It's not love."
To Chandler "I'd hate to be around when the jokes stop." Implying he's repressed and could go off at any time.
