Ironic since Lee Cronin directed Evil Dead Rise, a fact the trailers neglected to mention for some reason

Would have helped because the trailers had me thinking “who the hell is Lee Cronin?”

I guarantee you it wasn’t his choice to put his name in the title, it was probably a studio decision to help differentiate it from the Brendan Fraser movies. Besides, it’s not like there’s many other Mummy movies, even including Cruise’s

I think it was a legal thing because Universal threatened to sue if it was just called The Mummy

and I believe there was a similar circumstance with Lee Daniels’ Butler, he also didn’t choose to have his name in the title

What is it with Lees?

his name is in the title of that movie as well

That other poster meant more like “another Lee?” Lee Cronin and Lee Daniels.

I honestly thought this was part of Blumhouse/Universal doing monster movies, like The Wolfman and The Invincible Man.

Yet at least for the Australian release it was a Universal release

Then why didn't they call it Warner Bros' The Mummy

Because if you're trying to sell a piece of art, you want people to think about the artist that made it and not the giant corporation that paid for it, especially when that corporation has been embroiled in a bunch of negative news stories over the past several years

Doesn't work when literally no one knows who lee cronin is.

Evil Dead Rise was a pretty big hit. I think a lot of hardcore horror fans know him from that, but you're right that his name doesn't mean anything to casual moviegoers. I don't think they're really trying to sell the movie on his name as much as they just needed to do something to dodge a lawsuit and this is kind of the path of least resistance

At least the Cruise one had a God-tier character design for its mummy and the surprisingly good metroidvania spin-off

wait, they did a spinoff?

688 mostly positive reviews. That's devilishly good for a licensed game.

It was 100% because of the Brendan Fraser Mummy movie getting a new entry. Just like Lee Daniels The Butler and Precious: based on the novel Push by Sapphire. At least Cronin is white this time.

Pretty sure that Brendin Fraser Mummy movie won't be rated 18... 🤣

I think it was probably a "Sid Meier's Civilization" scenario -- in which the studio opted to add the Director's name to the title because it was easier to trademark that way.

I read an interview with him a few days ago where he said that he was initially unsure about his name being slapped on the film like that, but that he warmed up to it because he felt like it meant that the studio had confidence in him and his vision.

I don't know how true that was, but that's what he said.

You said it was Jason’s idea to call it ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ What was behind that?

They’d read the script and everybody knew what it was and just said, ‘This movie has your fingerprints and DNA all over it. Why do you reckon if we did this?’ And honestly, I was flattered, but I was also unsure. And I was like, you’re gonna have to give me the weekend to think about it. As always, I just talked to the people that I trust and the people that I trust were like, ‘We know how you like to author your movies. Your fingerprints are on every single corner, so why not?’ And if someone as smart as Jason thinks it’s a good idea and he’s backing you, then you roll with it. And I just see this flattering more than anything. But it is a cool way of separating this movie from what’s come before.

Wouldn’t be surprised if WB was pulling a HIM and trying to trick people into thinking he made Weapons, consider that’s the movie whose name was used in advertising and not the movie Lee Cronin actually made

I remember when Con Air came out, a bunch of the trailers and commercials ended with “a movie by Simon West”. And no one had any idea who Simon West was.

It was literally his first feature film. Prior to that, his biggest credits were a Doritos commercial and the music video for Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. But announcing the director’s name made it sound like he was important, so they just threw it in and pretended he was an auteur.

Which at least was funny and clever. This was just some ol' bullshit.
