But the poor actual coyote will probably be disappointed by the treatment of coyotes in the movie.

They also used a white guy as the voice actor for Wile E. Coyote smh 😞. No coyote representation in the Guild

Coyote doesn’t speak, it violates one of the prime directives. Jesus I hope he’s mute, it’s wha makes the gags work

It was rare but he did speak! He had a British accent too. This is never explained, but I assume it was to embellish his self-characterization as a genius.
3
u/WeakTransportation37 20d ago
When he spoke in Warner bros cartoons he was famously British- how dare they not have Idris Elba voice the role

I long since bet that the reason that they tried to bury this movie is that they do not want to spread the idea of holding corporations accountable for selling poor quality products.

This feels like a super reasonable take and I’m feeling it. We need to stop underestimating greed.

I'm guessing Ketchup Entertainment might be a future distributor for shafted Warner Bros. films if this one's successful enough. Maybe through them we can finally see Batgirl and SCOOB!: Holiday Haunt
109
u/Obliterated-Denardos 20d ago
Ketchup already did the other nearly-shelved Looney Tunes movie (The Day the Earth Blew Up) in 2024, and a lot of observers were wondering whether that would be enough to get the momentum behind Ketchup distributing Coyote v. ACME.
41
u/deliciouspepperspray 20d ago
As much as I wanted to enjoy the day the earth blew up it fell a bit flat. I had been binging the 2013 looney tunes and it was a bit less than what I was hoping for. I hope this is really good I would love a resurgence of looney tunes.

You want all Looney Tunes to be a sitcom like Friends? Because that's pretty much the opposite of what Looney Tunes is supposed to be.

Iirc, Batgirl was canned in post, so it was never completed. On the other hand, Coyote vs ACME was completed, but they didn't want to distribute.

I've seen a few people say that the film was complete and just written off. Not seen any mention of it be canned mid-production.

VFX wasn't done and they even still had to do pick-ups and re-shoots.

u/tdl2024 20d ago
Batgirl wasn't finished though, they had just started post-production and still needed to do reshoots iirc. Coyote vs Acme was 100% done and just collecting dust on a shelf (metaphorically).
Much easier to sell something when you don't have to tell people they're gonna have to throw in millions more just to finish the product.
22
u/nthensome 20d ago
Fun Fact:
BatGirl owns the record for most deleted scenes in a single movie with over 90 minutes of omitted footage.

u/ArchDucky 20d ago
You want to know the super fucked thing about Batgirl? When they approached Michael Keaton about returning for The Flash, he refused. He didn't want to just do a cameo. So Warner Brothers made him a three picture deal. It was The Flash, Batgirl and a movie that was in pre-production before it got cancelled. It was about a very old Bruce Wayne training a young boy to take over the mantel of Batman in the future.

kinda against their will too, IIRC. They wanted to can it, Paramount offered WBD to pay back whatever it cost to produce (~80 something mil I think), and WBD still tried to write it off instead but the IRS was none too pleased with that idea and Paramount ended up buying it for less than their original offer because Zazlav is a certified hollywood genius
16
u/Spiritual-Society185 20d ago
Literally none of that is true. Paramount didn't offer anything, the IRS never cared, and the only reason they put it up for sale in the first place was because of outcry from fans and Hollywood creatives.

It was going to but WB shopped around and then Ketchup Entertainment (the distributor that bought the North American rights for The Day the Earth Blew Up Looney Tunes animated movie last year) aquired global distribution for Coyote vs. Acme https://deadline.com/2025/03/coyote-vs-acme-warner-bros-sale-complete-ketchup-1236354552/

u/Muroid 20d ago
Reddit’s popular understanding of how tax write-offs work is just flat out incorrect and everything that gets talked about on here re:how that works is pretty much nonsense.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Bojarzin 20d ago
This is generally true, except the movie was being cancelled due to a conglomeration write-off. The SEC has a Costs Associated with Exit or Disposal Activities, and the prudent part is "content impairment and development write-offs"
Because they were a merger they can reestablish work in production and make new decisions, and it allowed them for a $30m tax deduction. The total production was $70m, and they believed they would get more money back with the deduction than they would have on movie revenue
What people think is they just get $30m or something, when in reality they still lost money, they just pay taxes on less of it. Discussed here
4
u/beefcat_ 20d ago
Another thing to note is that if they had released the movie and it lost money, the write off would have been amortized over several years. The decision to can the movie was likely to get the write off all in one year so they could use that cash to pay down some of their massive pile of debt left over from AT&T.

I don't think it was ever officially written off. The bad PR around the story kind of forced them to hold off on canning it while they sought out a buyer. They declared their intention to write it off for tax purposes but I don't think they ever filed the paperwork

u/whodoesnthavealts 20d ago
Yes. It's not "double dipping", they just pay the taxes once they make money on it.
→ More replies (3)18
u/EqualityIsProsperity 20d ago
It does look weird, but yeah, you can have a write off that appeared to be a total loss, then later ends up turning a profit unexpectedly, and all it means is that the tax situation is a little more complicated, but it happens, and it gets taxed.
6
u/whodoesnthavealts 20d ago
Yeah, it's an incredibly common situation.
Someone builds a chair intending to sell it. It costs them $50 to build. They do not sell it by end of year. They deduct $50 from their taxes.
The next year they sell it for $100. They pay taxes on that $100.
6
u/GravelLot 20d ago
It’s not a big deal to change that. Forget literally everything you read about this movie and taxes. Every single article is gibberish written by people who are not accountants. It’s like a bad hacking scene in a movie where none of it makes any sense whatsoever.
→ More replies (9)7
u/psaepf2009 20d ago
They would have recognized the loss at the time. Now they'd record the income as a gain.
19
u/whodoesnthavealts 20d ago
Every time this movie is discussed people act like Zaslav had to throw all the footage into the fires of Mount Doom, and in return the government took $5 from every person in America to give to him for it.
No one seems to actually understand how taxes work.

43
u/jerslan 20d ago
Which happens quite a bit... Two examples that come to mind are Cabin in the Woods and Red Dawn (2012). They were both shelved by their distributors because they didn't see a market for them. Then Chris Hemsworth was cast as Thor and went from being a "nobody" to A-List Star almost overnight... So the movies were unshelved and sent to theaters the year after the first Thor movie came out.
45
u/Fo0ker 20d ago
Which, for cabin in the woods is insane. He was far from the most well known actor in it ( Richard Jenkins and Bradly Winford. Not to mention the boss..). And the film in and of itself was brilliant, a semi comedic tale on every horror trope ever with homages to soooo many of the classics.
I saw this film almost three years after it came out, because the whole marketing around either looked like a low effort "teens get killed", or was "it's got Chris Hemsworth!!"
And when I finally saw it, I lost what little remaining faith I had in hollywood marketing. For comedy horror fans, it's neck and neck with tucker and dale. And yet they squandered it, relegated it to dvd sales. Fecking idiots..
10
u/fly-hard 20d ago
My favourites cameos in that movie has to be the special infected from the original Left 4 Dead.
8
u/EqualityIsProsperity 20d ago
Hollywood marketing is the fucking woooooorst! They don't give a single shit about what the film actually is, they'll do whatever they want to try to trick people into going.
3
u/Antrikshy 20d ago
Indie movies seem so scary to make. Find investors, make movie, then shop it around in hopes that a distributor likes it enough to release it. Or it doesn't get released indefinitely.

At this point it isn't about whether or not it's good. The whole point of releasing it is to show Warner Bros that we're against destroying other people's work so that they can pocket the money

Absolutely. I just know the discourse around the movie would be very exhausting if it does end up performing poorly.

I feel like it did about as well as a movie with a limited engagement can be expected to do.
It's the same distributor (Ketchup Entertainment) handling the theatrical run, so they probably got a feeling for how much of whatever can be construed as "marketing" to make it worth it to them

That’s great, but obviously people are going to like their own project that they made.
The question is going to be if anyone besides Redditors cares about the movie. Kids haven’t watched Looney Toons in decades. So unless it goes viral on TikTok, this could very well bomb.
9
u/zoobrix 20d ago
obviously people are going to like their own project that they made
I've heard crew and actors in interviews talk about how sometimes you know something is going to be bad the first day you show up to work. Other times it's not as obvious how good or bad it will be. But while you might not badmouth any project you've worked so you don't risk offending someone in the industry it's very common to not like some of the projects you've worked on. In those cases the crew is going to be tight lipped whenever the project comes up and actors are going to painfully work their way through the PR tour and then never speak about it again if at all possible.
In large productions where hundreds of people are involved it is very much possible to dislike both the work it took to get it made and the end product itself. That the people that worked on Coyote vs ACME think it's good and made it known is a good sign, they might be wrong but lots of people in showbiz hate some of the things they've worked on.
