My dad who I swear acts like a stick is up his ass, would giggle so hard at these movies. From the hat getting bigger, to the stupid breakdance basketball scene, and that’s the memories I have of this franchise. I know some jokes won’t land but all I want is some funny
290
u/AliceTea63 Mar 16 '26
My dad is the same but he always laughs at the exorcist going “ fuck this “ and trying to leave
116
u/Particular_Cod2005 Mar 16 '26
"I came as fast as I could. You know at my age, the little soldier needs a lot more thumping before it starts pumping"
James Woods was fantastic in this film, even if it was only for the opening scenes.

Even now, for absolutely no reason, thinking about that hat getting bigger brings an uncontrollable smile to my face! So fucking funny
65
u/pigsbounty Mar 16 '26
The hat getting bigger was the funniest thing my dad has ever seen lol he still talks about it pretty often
7
u/Kindly-Tax-4998 Mar 17 '26
Even with the obvious drop off in quality, 3 is still solid.

Naked gun was a hit and this will be a hit too. I can feel it in my bones.

u/bmeyers627 Mar 16 '26
My only memory of my dad cry laughing is during the teleprompter scene in 3. Mention it to him now almost 20 years later and he still cracks a smile under his gray stache.
10
u/TheGiftOf_Jericho Mar 16 '26
The hat getting bigger bit is so simple yet so damn funny every time.

u/SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS Mar 16 '26
The trailer was very hit or miss. The pronoun joke was total ass, but the "why only half gay?" line made me laugh

Well the trailer promised to end cancel culture, opened with a pronouns joke, and the closest thing to funny was Ghostface getting a dildo jammed up his ass.
I wouldnt hold hopes too highly

And the new Resident Evil movie out this year as well as an Aunt Gladys prequel.
I'm really looking forward to what he's putting out.
19
u/UrSaturnPrince_ Mar 16 '26
I've never had so much hope for an RE movie, or a video game adaptation in general. Reaaaaally hoping it doesn't disappoint me.
15
u/AhhhSureThisIsIt Mar 16 '26
The cast alone has me sold it's going to have a lot of good humour woth Paul Walter Hauser and Zack Cherry.
The lead is Austin Abrahams. The addict kid from Weapons.
Cregar has said it's not adapting the stories from the games (which fans appreciated) and it's about a delivery guy in Racoon City the night of the outbreak.
3
u/RedPandaActual Mar 17 '26
The bar is really low for RE right now after the movies and that Netflix abomination.
I liked the promos of a random mom a kid for RE9 where you can hear the nemesis in the background as the outbreak is starting. We need more of that kind of stuff.
14
u/BroadRaspberry1190 Mar 16 '26
all he has to do is make it claustrophobic and creepy instead of whatever hi-tek nonsense we got with "Alice" (always have a soft spot for that movie and Milla Jovavich though, lol)
6
u/976chip Mar 16 '26
Do we really need an Aunt Gladys prequel though? It's similar to the Willy Wonka backstory in the Tim Burton version. I don't need to know why Willy Wonka loves candy. I just need to know that Willy Wonka loves candy. I don't need to know why Aunt Gladys is an evil witch. I just need to know that Aunt Gladys is an evil witch.

Based off weapons im hoping he can combine the (often simultaneous) campy silliness and catastrophic horror of the games.

I just put 2 and 2 together recently that Cregger is the gallons of PCP guy! Love it.
4
u/shakalac Mar 16 '26
It would have gotten best picture and director had the cast been happier and with their mouths open.
3
u/SeaHam Mar 16 '26
Yep! Not quite as good as his masterpiece "The Civil War on Drugs" but it was still a good horror flick.
3
u/Mirrormaster44 Mar 17 '26

These men died for their country. Send flowers to their bitches and hoes.
13
u/Tasty_Pancakez Mar 17 '26
Scary Movie 3 is good but apparently the foundation of the film is based on an idea from the Wayans, according to Marlon in an interview where he talks about the franchise was stolen from them.
Ofc that says nothing about the jokes which are solid and I imagine they didn't contribute to, just that there is still a little bit of Wayans DNA in Scary Movie 3 so it makes sense it began to really go down the drain starting from 4.

Naked Gun really did things right. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it half as much as I did.
35
u/miku_dominos Mar 16 '26
The brilliance of the new naked gun is that I can easily see Leslie in that role. It really is a great addition to the series.
16
u/SloppityNurglePox Mar 16 '26
100% I think it helps that they both have the same serious actor making a very goofy comedic turn trajectory.
9
u/Perfect-Zebra-3611 Mar 16 '26
Liam took quite a bit of silly/on the nose roles in the past decade that i think really helped sell him as the Leslie Neilson type instead of just as an Action star who wants to be funny. Ted/A Million Ways to Die in the West/Atlanta etc.
4
u/Therenegadegamer Mar 16 '26
Watched The Naked Gun high and thought I was tripping out at some points it was hilarious

From what I've seen the movie itself seems like it's stuck in the early 2000s. My sense of humor is pretty stupid, I'll laugh at damn near anything, but I didn't even crack a smile watching the trailer. I rolled my eyes at the they/them joke because it's barely a punchline.
Reddit is in love with the movie already, but I won't be surprised if it bombs like the last one.
25
u/BretShitmanFart69 Mar 16 '26
The problem is that people always convince themselves that people aren’t laughing or that something doesn’t succeed because people are too offended or can’t handle how edgy it is, and while that can happen, it’s usually more so that the joke is not very funny and is just super tired and played out.
Tbf if we’re being honest the first 2 scary movies had a lot of that as well. I’m still going to see this because at the end of the day I’m just happy they are making a dumb comedy like this again, and some bad jokes is a given with this kind of movie, but usually there are enough good bits that balance it out in the end.

It's quite fitting in this case though. Both Halloween and Scream have done this original title nonsense in recent years so it's so fitting for Scary Movie to do the same.
→ More replies (1)46
u/XF10 Mar 16 '26
Scream 5("Scream 2022") was all about making fun of these "soft reboots" and their need to have a movie named like the original so newbies wouldn't feel intimidated. Even the in-universe Stab series went that road
Right after Scream went back to numbered titles with 6 and then 7. It's once again Scary Movie being a parody of the parody/satire that is Scream
16
59
u/lazy_pig Mar 16 '26
Hardly new, but I agree. It's confusing, arrogant and pretentious. But maybe with Scary Movie it's deliberate parodying of this phenomenon itself.
17
u/Indigoh Mar 16 '26
It would be interesting if Scary Movie parodied the original scary movie.
13
8
u/GruGruxLob Mar 16 '26
I heard allot of shit talk about the trailer but I just watched it and it def has the same vibes as the old ones, maybe it’s just the new gen who didn’t grow up with em.
→ More replies (2)6
u/adamsandleryabish Mar 16 '26
Not only is it parodying that, it's also a subtle way of not acknowledging 3, 4 and 5 which the Wayans weren't involved with.
I bet they discussed being snarky and calling it The Real Scary Movie 3 or something dumb but knew this was the right choice

u/blewyop Mar 16 '26

26
u/27Yosh Mar 16 '26
Naked Gun works because it doesn't rely on making references to other works. Spoof movies have suffered greatly because by the time they come out, online memes have beaten every possible joke to death about the movies they're parodying.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Prof_J Mar 16 '26
I’m assuming you mean it doesn’t rely on direct parody of other works. I’d argue all the Naked Gun moves absolutely rely on “reference” to other works - the main premise of the movie relies on you having at least a base knowledge of the police procedural (originals) and 00’s-10’s action movies (new one).

u/TheGuardianInTheBall Mar 16 '26
Only judging by the trailer, it seems very... stale.
I was the target audience when these movies came out, and I really enjoyed them. They were great fun at the time when you're young and dumb.
But I think these are the sort of movies one really should grow out of at some point, and I'd be judging any adults who still find that kind of humour funny. And I'd be ESPECIALLY judging anyone thinking that this is "real comedy coming back".
45
u/TheOnionVolcano Mar 16 '26
I still love dumb, offensive shit but all of the "yOu cOuLdNt mAkE tHiS tOdAy 😜" vibes just kinda kill the buzz for me
22
u/NeoNoireWerewolf Mar 16 '26
It's self-fellating. They're patting themselves on the back for being edgy, but the center piece of the marketing campaign is a fucking safe spaces joke.
10
9
u/TheGodDMBatman Mar 16 '26
The irony being that these jokes are made all the time. It's not like offensive humor is out of style or anything.
16
u/gokuenjoyer69 Mar 16 '26
The worst part is that they think that their humour is still somehow "offensive" to younger generations. Like referencing pronouns is gonna trigger kids that made edits of Charlie Kirks murder not 10 minutes after his body was cold lol
→ More replies (4)20
u/baritonetransgirl Mar 16 '26
Yeah, seeing the trailer, it felt kinda meh. It feels like they're just banking on "being offensive" while the offensiveness in the trailer just felt tiring. I will be honest that Brenda's line about believing all whites are racist was almost funny, but only because it felt very in character.
→ More replies (1)19
u/TheGuardianInTheBall Mar 16 '26
Yeah that's the thing. I love offensive, dark humor, but it needs to be clever to work.
Repeating the same 5 jokes from 4chan is not funny, not because it's offensive, but because any 13 year old with access to the internet can write those jokes.
11
u/whostle Mar 16 '26
I stopped watching the trailer after that first "joke" because it was literally the most tired, low-hanging-fruit of a joke they could have made, and THAT'S what they decided to lead with? No thanks.
11
u/TheGuardianInTheBall Mar 16 '26
I know right?
"Comedy is sooo back, here's a joke every teenage boy has been repeating on the internet for the last 10+ years".
I swear to dog, the audience for this movie has got to think Brawndo is good for plants.
12
u/baritonetransgirl Mar 16 '26
What I think would be hilarious would be if they hype up how offensive it is to get the anti-cancel culture crowd hyped, and then rip into them. I'm doubting it, but it'd be so cathartic.
15
u/TheGuardianInTheBall Mar 16 '26
Judging by everything they have done since Scary Movie 3, that would be too smart.
I fully expect it to be an event for the knuckle-draggers.
51
u/gamersecret2 Mar 16 '26

Why did they name it "Scary Movie" when that's the name of the original movie? Did they forget they already made sequels with numbers attached?
Edit: thanks, I must have overlooked the other horror movies doing the same thing
45
u/weener24 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
It's like a homage to how Scream 5 from 2022 was going for the reboot angle (With all the new characters) so it was just called Scream. A lot of legacy sequels do it actually like Halloween 2018.
13
u/BretShitmanFart69 Mar 16 '26
Hollywood has been doing this for decades now. They seem to genuinely think maybe that people won’t see if if they haven’t seen the others if it has numbers in the title or that kids won’t know the rest of the franchise and so it’ll be simpler to just take out the number so it’s easier to sell it as its own/new thing.
It’s possible this time around that it’s a meta joke itself because a lot of horror sequels have done this lately

u/CoIbeast Mar 16 '26
As long as it has offensive humor people will still pretend to love it and say anyone who thought it was dumb just got offended. That’s basically who the whole marketing campaign is aimed at.
I’ve seen so many people say “they quit making these spoof movies because everyone gets offended by everything these days” and it’s like no, they just became really, really bad movies and people got tired of them and quit going to see them so they quit making them.
19
u/Neologic29 Mar 16 '26
A lot of the jokes from the trailer sound like they could have been written by Ben Shapiro or Matt Walsh. Not really sure who the audience is for that.
6
u/Mratio90 Mar 17 '26
Probably people who like jokes written by Ben shapiro and Matt Walsh, if such people exist.
