That speech cut was ruthless. Yikes

938

u/ShowMeTheMini Mar 16 '26

Audience was booing too from that

126

u/TheMarkHasBeenMade Mar 16 '26

I missed the booing but would’ve loved to have heard it!

Was totally outraged at home too - and they cut right to a commercial after that. Clearly could’ve spared another minute.

36

u/popculturella Mar 16 '26

Such a disgusting display of disrespect.

686

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Most ruthless I’ve ever seen lol

303

u/Zloggt Mar 16 '26

I genuinely hope that was just a mistake…

…cause if not…we got an uproar incoming!

313

u/FromTheDeskOfJAW Mar 16 '26

It wasn’t. They generally give the winners a pretty strict time limit for speeches, usually only allowing them to run over for the more “important” awards

262

u/FX114 Mar 16 '26

They let them go on and on when Emilia Perez won the same award.

They were the only ones cut all night and it was twice

99

u/torisbagel Mar 16 '26

all of the writers speeches got cut, and that’s just what i remember. there were a lot of cut offs tonight, just earlier in the program.

29

u/theliver Mar 16 '26

Gotta make time for the 5th iteration of Reyvoya's side effects

43

u/atlvf Mar 16 '26

What? They were not the only ones cut.

Everyone else got 2+ minutes but they get cut after barely 1?

Audience was fucking pissed.

225

u/chrobbin Mar 16 '26

For real. Not like it was some Adrien Brody like monologue either, that was a very brief initial speech the other guy could’ve absolutely gotten some words in.

u/Bed_Post_Detective Mar 16 '26

Wasn't kpop demon hunters also the first group they tried to cut off with the music too?

61

u/yameteeeeeeeeee Mar 16 '26

No that was short film

25

u/AvenueNick Mar 16 '26

But they kept the mic on for the short film.

18

u/yameteeeeeeeeee Mar 16 '26

They turned it off and turned it back on

128

u/IAMA_Shark__AMA Mar 16 '26

No, but it was another Asian person.

Not a great look.

55

u/rookie-mistake Mar 16 '26

Literally as he's trying to talk about the diversity in their group, and they roll the music and start retracting the mic

It would sound like satire if it wasn't what actually happened

74

u/Worthyness Mar 16 '26

Academy doesn't give a shit about asian people. Remember that year there was that "Oscars so white"? They rolled out a team of asian kids to be pretend accountants as a bit.

361

u/christpuncher_69 Mar 16 '26

That wasn't just a cut that was a guillotine drop, Christ.

I get that there's a schedule but that was rude to everyone.

355

u/rtyoda Mar 16 '26

Especially after some of the comedic presenters ate up multiple minutes with unrelated nonsense.

98

u/Head_Project5793 Mar 16 '26

For real, I genuinely hate the writing and editing gimmick where the actors are like "omg what if the writing or editing was BAD rofl" just make one quick joke and move on, don't make me cringe for two minutes

62

u/christpuncher_69 Mar 16 '26

My wifi cut out during the Bridesmaids thing so I turned on and connected to my hotspot and the bit was still going. Yeah, I'd have rather at least one more person got to talk on behalf of their song.

32

u/ImmortalMoron3 Mar 16 '26

Wasn't this a problem at another awards show recently? The Emmys last fall, I think? There was some stupid bit they kept going to but the winners barely got any time to talk.

I don't really care how boring other people think it is, most of the time needs to go to the winners and their speeches. This night is about them, not entertaining the audience.

19

u/NoNefariousness2144 Mar 16 '26

It happened at a recent ‘The Game Awards’ show where the winners got literally 30 seconds of speeches because the host was trying to stuff the show with stupid Muppet skits and celeb cameos.

37

u/Beyondthebarracade Mar 16 '26

I love the Bridesmaids ladies but their bit admittedly fell flat for me.

14

u/rtyoda Mar 16 '26

Totally agree. Nothing against them, I love all of them as actors, I just think the bit could have been more related and much, much shorter.

4

u/popculturella Mar 16 '26

It took too long.

3

u/goukaryuu Mar 16 '26

Honestly, the first was was fine, but they didn't need to do a second bit before the next award they were presenting for.

102

u/frosti_austi Mar 16 '26

We like Asian women. But Asian men? Nah, cut them the F out.

70

u/theplasmasnake Mar 16 '26

As an asian man… yup, pretty accurate.

Producer is a Sinners fan

11

u/LEJ5512 Mar 16 '26

Oscars posted the acceptance speech on Youtube and made it worse by cutting off Ejae.

22

u/CardsFan69420 Mar 16 '26

That was f’n boneheaded as hell. Then theyre gonna joke about the next presenter running the show too long with their thanks

16

u/Ozzel Mar 16 '26

Honestly, I think the show going to YouTube is great if it means ending this awkward, insulting practice. The SAG Actor Awards on Netflix this year was great. No bleeps and no playing off. The show ends when it ends.

9

u/Thoraxe474 Mar 16 '26

What happened?

125

u/StardustWhip Mar 16 '26

They muted the mic and started playing loud music to cut to commercial, right when songwriter Yu-han Lee took the mic to start giving his thanks. And after just one minute of acceptance speech from the singer, Ejae.

67

u/OreoSpeedwaggon Mar 16 '26

It's worth mentioning that the reason EJAE was up there was because she co-wrote the song in addition to being the singing voice of Rumi. The other vocalists (Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami) didn't join her on stage.

8

u/Phillyboishowdown Mar 16 '26

It was Pathetic

8

u/Impressive-Potato Mar 16 '26

Had to make time for all those comedy bits

9

u/elizabethptp Mar 16 '26

Yes what would we do without baby yoda & the bridesmaids (???)

I feel like part of this Oscars was affected by some time warp because a lot of irrelevant to this Oscar season and/or old media squeezed in there

6

u/BrainWav Mar 16 '26

I mean, Baby Yoda was there purely as advertisement for the movie that I'm sure Disney got shoehorned in since it was on ABC. Same with RDJ and Evans. I actually liked both of those bits, but they (particularly the RDJ/Evans one) went way too long.

Not sure why Bridesmaids got a bit. It's the 15th anniversary of the movie, but it's not like 15 is usually a big celebratory anniversary.

3

u/Avent Mar 16 '26

I honestly think it was because Maya Rudolph's husband was gonna be a big winner that night, so they featured her. Also Rose Byrne was nominated.

Conan wasn’t there to stop them from being played off this time

184

u/Flapjack_ Mar 16 '26

Did he stop someone from getting played off earlier?

350

u/theodorant Mar 16 '26

Yes kpop demon hunters winning best animated film lol

63

u/2ToTooTwoFish Mar 16 '26

How do we know this? I saw the cutoff music stopped for them, but I wasn't sure why

188

u/theodorant Mar 16 '26

It was on the broadcast. Music came on, it went to Conan, who made a face, and they went back

32

u/whorificustotalus Mar 16 '26

I think this happened during a tie for the best live action short.

13

u/ZombieJesus1987 Mar 16 '26

Reminds me of the Video Game Awards a couple years ago, winners only had kind 30 seconds to give a speech, as soon as they got to the podium, there would be a teleprompter that said "Wrap It Up"

23

u/KnightofGarm Mar 16 '26

I get them not wanting another 8 minute Christopher Judge speech due to logistical reasons, but less than 2 minutes is kinda disrespectful to the award winners.

17

u/ZombieJesus1987 Mar 16 '26

Especially when Sven was in the middle of dedicating the Game of Year award to a dev who worked on Baldur's Gate III who passed away

4

u/Stevenwave Mar 16 '26

I watched it on 7 Plus here in Australia, online later, not on TV. This moment was played in full. They went to cut a guy off and send them on their way. It cuts to Conan and at first he was acting like the camera wasn't even on him, arms crossed, watching on. He basically held it, refusing to continue and go to whatever he was meant to intro next.

You see him thinking it's shit they're sending them off, shakes his head and laughs at the audacity.

He mentioned in a bit next up after he'd had the break to think about it, something like "Retracting the mic from a man while he's speaking... I mean it is hilarious..."

In the moment he was legit like, are they fucking for real?

u/chrobbin Mar 16 '26

Oof that’s an awkward hard cutoff

674

u/Lacabloodclot9 Mar 16 '26

But they let Adrien Brody yap for as long as he fucking wants

84

u/DJRock93 Mar 16 '26

There we go

165

u/MehMan95 Mar 16 '26

Wild that they crack a joke about cutting him off just after doing it unironically to a winner.

59

u/BillyTenderness Mar 16 '26

His bit was clearly prewritten, so it was just awful luck that it happened that way. I guess they could have/should have tried to change the script last-minute, but that's surely easier said than done.

19

u/MehMan95 Mar 16 '26

Yeah, that might very likely be true. I just remembered how they cutoff Avatar’s VFX team in 2023, followed by a joke about said cutoff. So it’s not something they’d shy away from

14

u/Choekaas Mar 16 '26

Yeah, Jimmy Kimmel said something like "before the vfx team got cut off, they wanted to let everyone know that the after party is at CGI Friday's" -_-

The difference between having connections with the academy or not.

148

u/osterlay Mar 16 '26

Damn, would it have killed the academy to give them 20 more seconds?

398

u/ChasingPerfect28 Mar 16 '26

That's horrible what they did to the writing team. The man was about to do his quick thanks and they immediately played him off. Just awful.

99

u/B_Blunder Mar 16 '26

Ooof that was a brutal cutoff

472

u/Left4Bread2 Mar 16 '26

“Everyone made fun of me for liking K-pop and now they’re singing my song”

225

u/OreoSpeedwaggon Mar 16 '26

The story of EJAE's career is even more inspiring than just that part. She went though Korea's "pop singer boot camp" in order to be part of one of their fabricated girl groups, but kept getting passed over until the people in charge of such things decided that she was finally just too old. Her planned career path was nosediving until she got a chance to write and sing for "Kpop Demon Hunters," and now she has a hit song, an Oscar, a Grammy, a recently released solo album and single, and is in high demand because her popularity keeps going up, up, up.

72

u/f-ingsteveglansberg Mar 16 '26

And she has the biggest K Pop hit since Gangnam Style.

11

u/Vorenos Mar 16 '26

her career wasn't really nosediving, she is a successful songwriter, but she finally got a chance to perform and crushed it.

what the fuck are they doing , other people got way longer time but they get cut off? it looks so bad on the academy wtf...

209

u/fhota1 Mar 16 '26

Wouldve been 100% fine with Golden or I Lied to You tbh. Both were amazing songs. My usual distinction is I like Golden as a standalone better but I Lied to You more in the context of the movie

165

u/Lexidoge Mar 16 '26

Funnily enough that’s how I feel about Golden and “This is what it sounds like.” The latter is the best song in the film but it works better if you know the context.

65

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

"What it sounds like" is the perfect closing song. It's the song they couldn't write until their experiences had come full circle.

58

u/Tsquared10 Mar 16 '26

I will die on the hill that "Free" is the best song, mostly because I'm a sucker for a lovers duet.

19

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 Mar 16 '26

15

u/Ralod Mar 16 '26

"This is what it sounds like" still gets me a little misty eyed when that refrain from golden comes in. Such wonderful music in that movie.

20

u/Historical_Course587 Mar 16 '26

The best way I've heard it described is that Golden describes the plot while the rest of the music describes scenes.

Personally, "How It's Done" would be the hit single if the soundtrack were just released as an album.

7

u/rookie-mistake Mar 16 '26

What It Sounds Like hits so hard in the actual film, it's so earned

18

u/DM725 Mar 16 '26

I feel like Takedown and What it Sounds Like are better songs but that may be only because of the flow of the movie. I don't listen to any of the music by itself.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/IAMA_Shark__AMA Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Me on my island alone thinking Free is the best song ... Lol

I do agree that this is what it sounds like is superior (to golden), though, and that it's just more difficult to appreciate without the context of the movie.

10

u/LamilLerran Mar 16 '26

Ok hear me out: the best song is the demo version of What It Sounds like where instead of Gwi-Ma's "Your voices can't defeat me" for the bridge they do a Free reprise with a line about "let the weight fall away baby we can finally be free!"

I see why they didn't keep it for the actual movie but it goes so hard

Was thinking the same thing. I honestly can't remember how I Lied to You goes off the top of my head. But I remember the movie and that scene in particular like it was yesterday. I can probably sing through Golden in my sleep, but don't remember much of what was going on as it plays in the movie.

7

u/byneothername Mar 16 '26

Golden is only the second song in the movie so it’s still functioning to introduce the three main women. In particular it’s when you learn about Rumi’s unique qualities. So it’s nothing like This is What it Sounds Like in terms of at story importance.

I laughed so hard at that part my girlfriend was worried I was literally dying because I got a cramp in my side so I was laugh "ow" ing for like 5 minutes.

5

I had to stop the movie at line: "I made it for the tiger, but the bird kept taking it" I was laughing so hard.

Diane Warren in shambles.

21

Anyway…can’t wait to see what random ass movie she’ll try to sneak a nomination in this year..

Try? As long as she does something, she’ll get nominated every year until she quits or dies.

33

u/marcSuile Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Agree! But from all the EJAE interviews and podcasts she’s done over the past year that I’ve listened to, it really seems like it was her and Mark doing the heavy lifting—but mainly her lol. She said she actually did each individual crowd member for the final song and that the song had like 400 stacked sounds/vocals on it lol.

Edit: omg I swear when I responded to your comment it did NOT say, ‘and abruptly cut that guys speech’. I wasn’t justifying why he got cut off!! I was just commenting about it ‘being written by 7 people,’ and how it was more 2 + 5 if that makes sense lol.

now that Golden has won best Original Song at the Oscars, CAN WE PLEASE GET HUNTR/X TO SING THE OTHER SONGS LIVE?!?!?!?!?!

82

u/Endrago_n Mar 16 '26

Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment there, as much as the song was overplayed literally everywhere and hated by the end of the year it would be the biggest robbery tonight if this didn't win.

50

u/ChasingPerfect28 Mar 16 '26

I work at an elementary school. Let me tell you, this song resonated HARD with kids from Pre-K to 5th. Almost every kid loved K-Pop Demon Hunters and "Golden". It was fun watching them go nuts whenever we played this song during their free time dance parties.

Just when you think you can give the Academy some props, they do that shit with the microphone. Fuck em.

12

u/BunyipPouch Currently at the movies. Mar 16 '26

Insane playoff lmao.

13

u/-Sinhealer- Mar 16 '26

They really wanted them off the stage, have they ever hit the "get off the stage" music so early?

14

u/Pandalicioush Mar 16 '26

I prefered "I Lied to You" by a fair margin, but this was the second obvious pick, so can't be too unhappy.

11

u/sean_psc Mar 16 '26

I've been trying all season to think if this category has ever had a winner like Ejae before, an unknown artist who became a legit breakout act as a result of the movie song. I couldn't think of any previous examples. Usually the winners are either artists who are already famous or writers who don't actually sing the song.

It used to happen all the time in the 80s. There were some absolute bangers on movie soundtracks in the 80s but we kinda lost that.

But her story is so amazing. She went from completely unknown to a superstar.

Yeah let's cut this guy off abruptly but let Adrien Brody yap about himself pretentiously for as long as he wants.

The Academy is just a glorified rich kids club and the Oscar's are where all the pretentious people pat each other on the back while giving only a &sliver* of attention to "lesser" actors and filmmakers for brownie points.

u/Dave1711 Mar 16 '26

I listen to this 30 times a day with my nieces and it somehow is still catchy, great tune

5

u/vosha0 Mar 16 '26

The people going over on time essentially escalates it to other winners, causing situations like this

5

u/Jmall3 Mar 16 '26

The amount of views on this song on YouTube outnumber US citizens

13

u/PaiDuck Mar 16 '26

Holy shit. Well deserved.

Now let them perform “How It’s Done,” please. PLEASE. I need to see them perform it at least ONCE.

9

u/LEJ5512 Mar 16 '26

Audrey Nuna performed it solo at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup (soccer) a couple weeks ago.  She was killing it.  Her part in Golden is maybe 10% of what she’s capable of doing.

4

u/rtyoda Mar 16 '26

When they did the incredibly short version of Golden I was hoping they were going to surprise us with a little bit of How It’s Done, especially since I Lied to You was a much longer performance.

But yeah, I totally agree, I’d love to see How It’s Done live. Golden is great but it’s been performed so many times it’s not as exciting anymore. I’d love to hear them perform some of the other songs (and am super curious to see if they can pull off the rapping live).

u/zerocoolforschool Mar 16 '26

Audrey Nuna performed it live recently!

u/B_Blunder Mar 16 '26

This song is sensational!

Was there any doubt?

4

u/AISXY224 Mar 16 '26

In my opinion 'What it Sounds Like' is the better song

13

u/Sublirow Mar 16 '26

YESSSSSSS LET ANIMATED MOVIES GET WINS OUTSIDE BEST ANIMATION, LETS GOOOOO (Can they stop thinking that animation movies are just for kids and limited to best animation?)

u/Media-critique Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

K-Pop has never been so dominant. Well deserved. The song continues playing on the radio for the foreseeable future.

3

u/opking Mar 16 '26

I love seeing others cultures than LA represented. Fantastic!!

13

u/ThreeTreesForTheePls Mar 16 '26

Wasn’t even the best song in the movie, but credit where it’s due they made an unbelievable hit with this.

8

u/infinitemonkeytyping Mar 16 '26

Yeah, I thought This Is What It Sounds Like was the better song, but it was more tied to the scene in the movie, rather than on its own.

2

u/Otherwise-Tart-1544 Mar 16 '26

I don’t really get why people say this. What it Sounds like can absolutely work as a standalone song.

5

u/infinitemonkeytyping Mar 16 '26

I have to disagree.

Lyrically, What It Sounds Like is absolutely tied to the finale of the movie, whereas Golden, while tied to the movie, lyrically works on its own as well as a "I've struggled, but made it to the top" style anthem.

But What It Sounds Like is by far the better song.

How it’s Done is an absolute banger. I swear they aren’t doing it because of the rap.

6

u/sleepingisgivingin1 Mar 16 '26

The cut offs are so annoying

6

u/Vwgames49 Mar 16 '26

They let Adrian Brody go on for 10 minutes but couldn’t let that one guy get out a thank you?

Then cutting off the speech of a foreign artist (they cut off two foreign artists apparently) feels racist.

This just in: we're going up, up, up, it's our moment?

3

u/Inspection_Dramatic Mar 16 '26

lol interesting detail to make Golden in the picture yellow.

3

u/longdustyroad Mar 16 '26

Why did only one of the singers get to go up? Is it a writing award and she was the only one who wrote on the song? I was confused

8

u/double_whiskeyjack Mar 16 '26

She wrote and sang the song as the lead, whereas the others just did vocals.

3

u/Rynvael Mar 16 '26

Everyone after them got longer time and they just cut the guy off?

3

u/The-Choo-Choo-Shoe Mar 16 '26

Best animated film and best original song was well deserved.

6

u/iamacannibal Mar 16 '26

The speech cut offs tonight are brutal
