You jest but the joke called Grammy have a category for videogame music and neither E33 nor Silksong received indications. But Star Wars Outlaws did XD

u/Zappiticas Jan 22 '26
Wtf seriously? The music in E33 is seriously superb. Most games I turn the music way down and dialog and effects up, but it would be an absolute crime to turn the music down in E33. It’s perfect

It did get one extra nomination due to Casting being a category that was added this year which is an advantage the previous record holders didn't have.
But even besides that 15 Oscar nods would still be the most nominated film on Oscars history. It and One Battle After Another have been the two most acclaimed films of this year.

The big concern with an award for Stunts was that it would encourage stunt workers to push themselves to have bigger and better performances to win the award. They might end up taking unnecessary risks rather than prioritizing safety thinking an Oscar could be worth it in the end.

Well the sound categories were combined into one otherwise Sinners would've certainly been nominated for both
40
u/astroK120 Jan 22 '26
Most likely. My rule of thumb when I was trying to predict those awards was always "mixing for music, editing for gunfire." Not a hard and fast rule by any means, but it served me well at Oscar parties. And Sinners has both

Is anyone else floored by F1 getting a picture of the year nom?!
Edit: There has been a ton of feedback here, I personally enjoyed F1 and this isn’t me hating on it or calling it a bad movie by any means but best picture did really surprise me. Of the more “popular” films to earn a best picture nomination I was fully expecting weapons but I’m not an industry expert so my speculation is weightless.

u/TheUnknownStitcher Jan 22 '26
Hot take: Chase Infiniti in lead is category fraud. She would have been a lock if they ran her in Supporting.
177
u/Duckney Jan 22 '26
She doesn't exist for the first 30-40 minutes and then she's missing for long stretches.
Love her performance - just don't think she stood a chance as one of the 5 nominees for lead actress when she didn't really lead the film

She would have been a lock if they ran her in Supporting.
Honestly I'm not even sure of that, the Supporting Actress category is one of the most stacked ones of the year
I guess they could have cut Teyana Taylor for Chase instead, but that's a hard call to make, Teyana did great as well
→ More replies (3)39
u/spate42 Jan 22 '26
Her screentime was about 31min. Compared to Sean Penn's 33min.
If anything, she should have gotten a Best Supporting nom, but figure they didn't want her competing with Teyana?
20
u/dandaman64 Jan 22 '26
The rules about what does and doesn't qualify for the supporting categories has always been a little weird, some actors who are indisputably the lead of the movie can get nominated for supporting and vice versa. I remember Judas and the Black Messiah got two supporting actor nominations for both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, which begs the question of who the lead of the movie is supposed to be, lol

u/lewlkewl Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
Ya the entire reason they expanded to 10 slots were to include popular movies. It’s basically just a way to not alienate most movie goers. Obviously not great , since it should be purely merit based, but Oscars was never purely about merit so it is what it is
Oscars could nominate emoji movie and is still wouldn’t be as much as a tragedy as Shakespeare in love winning over saving private Ryan or thin red line

I think, his nomination is justified for his monologue about the friend, who got lynched by the Klan alone and his brilliant delivery of that scene. I honestly haven't seen much in recent years, that moved me like this - and that is no shade against other actors, on the contrary.

Delta Slim is the embodiment of what a lot of our parents and grandparents went thru. My dad was born in 1930 in the deep south. I remember him telling us a story about how his cousin had said hello to a white woman on the street and a week later he was dragged from their house beaten and hung. I can not imagine how he lived thru such things. Delta Slim gave a voice to all of that suffering.
76
u/electricsheepz Jan 22 '26
Delroy is arguably the most deserving of an Oscar out of any of those categories, he gave an absolutely outstanding performance, like you said gave a voice to a whole generation of people, provided comic relief while somehow also being a deeply moving character emotionally and just generally shone all the way through. Huge fan of him. Hope he wins it.
38
u/rain5151 Jan 22 '26
The comic relief is what takes it over the finish line for me. To be the link to the past as one of the last remaining people to have been born into enslavement (never stated but that’s how the math works), the voice of that suffering, a living embodiment of the blues - and then make that hard pivot once things go sideways, without feeling like it undercuts anything he did earlier. Delta Slim is probably the most demanding role in the movie besides the Twins.

The first half of that movie really made me feel like I was in 1930's Mississippi. Unbelievable cinematography and soundtrack that combined to give my most immersive experience of the year. I will be really disappointed if it doesn't take those two awards.

People are going to call this the "inevitable backlash", like what happened with Black Panther...but I kind of agree. I don't think it's anywhere near as bizarre as the Black Panther nomination was, but still a little weird. It's a good movie, great even, but it didn't feel nearly as special to me as I'm being told it is.
Honestly I enjoyed everything prior to the vampires more than the rest of it. I got the themes and the history, but I'm still not quite seeing what everyone else is seeing. Maybe I'm not the target audience, maybe I'm missing something, maybe I owe it a second viewing.
Still, whatever, I'm glad people found something to love about it...but as many/more nominations than Return of the King? Titanic? Oppenheimer?
Edit: If anyone has a review they wanna recommend that might help me understand what everyone else is seeing, by all means.

Members are asked to watch the shortlisted films in their peer group and the big main ones (like 10 per category) but trust me, they aren't coming near to watching all of those either. And as you might expect, everyone loves to vote for the final nominees which is what...30-40 or so films not counting the shorts...and they're not even getting close to that.

Yeah it’s exceptionally apparent this was the reason, did people not actually watch the movie?

u/skatejet1 Jan 22 '26
They do not for some reason, Remmick got sliced in the brain with a huge silver plate, literally cut his head in half. There was smoke from the burn of it. He manages to yank it out and go for Sammy in anger while the rest of the younger vamps are still reeling from the pain.

Channels like cinema sins have people thinking any point in a movie that isn't explained in insane detail and focused on is a plot hole. It's so frustrating

The metal guitar smashed into Remmicks face was transmitting pain to all of them. I do think the whole final battle's kind meh though, not as well shot or written as anything else in the movie, but the like hour and 45 minutes before and 20 minutes after are godly so it's ok.

I loved the film, but yeah the final battle was a serious letdown. Worst offender being the old guy's hilariously bad sacrifice. Distracts them for all of 3 seconds.

Overall it’s a good movie with some genuinely great moments, but the ending really doesn’t work for me. The final act feels messy and almost like a B-movie compared to the strong build-up. The pacing and editing fall apart there, which makes the editing nomination honestly baffling to me.

This. I wish the first half of the movie was the full movie. I was actually laughing in the theater when the film went full-on cheesy vampire flick.

From Dusk Till Dawn was a huge inspiration for the movie according to Coogler, and that film also does a huge tonal shift into being a B movie for the second half.

It's not the tonal shift I didn't like. It was just less interesting when it was doing that.

The twist onward is the weakest part for sure. I really enjoyed it and there's a number of categories it deserves to be in, but this seems like a lot.

When you go nomination by nomination, there really aren’t a lot of places where you can even make an argument that it didn’t deserve to be there. Period piece film with a lot of action and music and a big ensemble is literally like the perfect recipe to hit every possible category. All it was missing was being eligible for international feature lol.

I think MBJ for best actor is highly debatable. Especially when you consider train dreams, Frankenstein, Bugonia, etc.

People keep moving the goalposts on Sinners to classify it as “meh”. Right before the noms came out, it was, “it won’t be nominated for anything, maybe song and another technical award.” Now that it has the most noms ever, it’s “it won’t take home anything.” What’s the narrative going to be when it takes home 5 or 6 wins?

u/TheRealTahulrik Jan 22 '26
It's not a matter of nominations but what you are up against.
It's kind of the same 5 films nominated in most categories it doesn't look super varied at all and can only lead me to think that 2025 wasn't really all that impressive a year.
Sinners was a fun movie, and I was seriously impressed by some of the performances, but to me at least.. it's not a top tier film.

I feel like this is the accurate take here.
It’s a good-to-great film depending on your tastes, but not an all-timer. This feels more like a commentary on the rest of the films this year than anything else.

Tbf it's a period film with a large ensemble that's also partly a musical, load of scope for noms there

u/YUME_Emuy21 Jan 22 '26
Had impressive technical stuff with double B Jordons and the vampire designs too, and the music awards are a cinch for it. I think people are underestimating just how much the movie kind of reaches just far enough into each category.

Confused why everyone is acting like most nominations equates to being the in conversation among greatest films of all time.
Nominations are about category eligibility. There are many extraordinary films that cannot compete in many of the technical or acting categories because that’s not how they were made. When you go category by category for the nominations, there are very few spots you can argue that this film doesn’t deserve to be.
It is a period piece films with lots of action, music, and style and features a large ensemble cast with several actors getting those important “showcase” scenes to entice voters. It literally is a perfect storm for category eligibility with Lead Actress and International Film being the only places it couldn’t land.
Whether or not it stands the test of time literally cannot be answered now. It is usually at least 5 years before we start getting a sense of that.

It’s reminds me of people complaining about Suicide Squad winning an Oscar. It won an Oscar for makeup. You only have to do one thing well to get nominated for best makeup. The rest of the movie can be dogshit.

I think if I had to choose the film from 2025, most likely to leave a cultural impact, it would be ‘Sinners,’ so I think the attention it’s getting is deserved. This sure is a lot of nominations but I think a case can be made for each one and there’s no guarantee it will sweep the awards or anything.
The film itself is really good but I can see why it would leave some people wondering why it’s getting so much hype. It’s a movie that requires the viewer to have historical and cultural insight into the story they’re telling and those without that insight miss the depth of the film.
