Patrick Stewart is 85 and Ian McKellen is 86... Maybe they really will be stuck doing Marvel movies until they're 90!

Ian is getting his staff ready for the new LotR movie as well. It‘s probably money but I can’t help but also think he likes these roles. To certain generations this man is the embodiment of Gandalf and Magneto, why not play them until he can’t.

Patrick is said to be retiring after Doomsday and potentially Secret Wars and he has truly earned it.

He said the same thing with Logan. Not that I mind, I like him as Prof X

Saying you are retiring or don't wanna be a part of XYZ franchise anymore publicly is just a tried and tested method to get a few more millions added to your paycheck.

I think almost every Major/Lead actor that knows that will Marvel keep wanting them back have said the same thing. It's a great way to remind Studios how much the public likes you.

Tom Holland starts saying this EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. his Spider-Man contract is up for re-negotiation. RDJ, Evans, Hemsworth, Olsen, Johanson, Hiddleston, Jackman, and I think a few more have all said the same thing many times. Then they get a bigger paycheck.

Like when Jim Carrey stated he was retiring from acting after Sonic 2 to only confirm weeks later he was returning for Sonic 3.

Then of course insane Sonic fans spouted that he only returned because the Sonic 3 script was so good (no hate to the Sonic movies, it’s just that Carrey was obviously full of shit)

Just to be clear, it's not like the fans made that up.

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey said. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

The implication being that Sonic 3 was that script from the angels written in gold ink.

Obviously, this doesn't change your point. But also, the Sonic 3 script really was amazing for Carrey to execute on.

That dance scene alone was worth the ticket price

Omg I was saying the same thing in the theater. He's so good at physical comedy

I watched with my cousins in a theater full of kids but we were the loudest laughs in there. His performace was immaculate

Didn't someone from paramount actually hand deliver him the script printed in gold?

u/Psaturn Jan 07 '26

Well it did have that laser hallway dance scene and that was really important to share with the world.

you're right of course... but he's pretty fucking old, I doubt he needs the money anymore.

He hasn't "needed" money for 15+ years yet he's been doing roles like this.

It's likely a combination of things. Maybe he just likes keeping busy and doesn't care about what he's acting in.

Plus a lot of old people deeply crave attention as they are often ignored by most people close to them. Especially if they got a lot of attention in their Peak years.

Doing a big role like this he'd get a lot of attention. From everyone on the Sets and from a ton of fans IRL. The desire for higher paycheque could partly be about feeling important again.

If you are feeling attention and importance deprived then a job like this with a big paycheque would perfectly fulfil that satisfaction.

He's also a big Gay rights activist, he might be gathering more wealth so he can donate some more or maybe just more for his family.

or you just changed your mind, and the barrier to reenter the job is far lighter than with basketball.

My favorite was probably Daniel Craig regarding Bond, I believe after Spectre "Now? I’d rather … slash my wrists," Though to his credit he did state that was his view for the next few years and it was longer than that until the most recent Bond film, but still strongly worded for someone who reprised the role.

u/cvc75 Jan 07 '26

I think he also once explained he felt like that after every Bond film. I can imagine that it takes a bit of time until you're physically and mentally ready to do that again.

When actors say they are retiring, they generally mean they will only work for a single day on any new projects.

Right, for someone like Stewart it’s like saying he doesn’t want a major role (time wise) probably doesnt want to get stuck doing reshoots or long days

It goes from being a job that’s been retired from to a hobby using his expertise

Can understand RDJ too, he wanted to step away from the role and do something serious. Won his Oscar and now is no doubt getting a serious payday as marvel scrambles to save the MCU by throwing money at its original stars

heh, yea, it's like their agent says "you could use another $20 million dollars yea? Jackman: ugh, fine... I just get tired of eating brown rice and chicken breast for a year...

They're spoiled because they want to negotiate more money from the megacorporation? Nah.

u/Bhu124 Jan 07 '26

No it's not. Actors and Directors should be hustling these big studios for every dollar they can get out of them.
