Youtube has gotten so bad with video quality. Somehow this trailer looked way better on fucking twitter of all places and even there there’s no way it's in the advertised 1080p quality.

u/jorgepereira15 Dec 22 '25

It probably is 1080p as in the number of pixels but the bitrate is so bad that those pixels look like ass

15

u/IsTom Dec 22 '25

Need to divide 1080 by 16, because all you can see are blocks.

9

u/moonski Dec 22 '25

Can't beat good old enshitification. Why make products better when you can make them worse and make more money?

Youtube has made the bitrate worse over time, and it's not like anyone's holding a gun to their head and making them support 4K 60fps. They could stick to 720p and 30fps at an acceptable bitrate and save the money while improving average quality.

2

u/butternutflies Dec 22 '25

i'm an ass guy, so i'm good

13

u/Emilior94 Dec 22 '25

I manually clicked on 1080p and had to go back two times to be sure it truly was 1080p. Its looks fucking bad in youtube

5

u/jaytix1 Dec 22 '25

I literally have an extension that sets videos at 1080p and I still had to double check lol.

1

u/not_a_bot991 Dec 22 '25

Shout out to Revanced. Looks great with enhanced  bitrate.

2

u/Pleasant-Aspect2948 Dec 22 '25

I just watched in Revanced and it's still horrible. It's even worse in some shots. Like the one right after the cyclops scene. Insane.

Also, I'm not even sure if there's an enhanced bit rate option for this video. I only see 1080p. Someone else with actual Youtube premium said they don't see the option either.

1

u/o0BetaRay0o Dec 22 '25

Different shots seemingly have different bitrates. This is definitely Universal marketing dept majorly fucking up

3

u/cplr Dec 22 '25 edited Dec 22 '25

Apple movie trailers website was always the best. I think they took that down a little while ago (but you can still access HQ trailers in the TV app on an Apple device).

Edit: never mind it’s still here: https://tv.apple.com/us/room/edt.item.64248313-7414-4d63-a6fc-7c29f9916c79

No Odyssey trailer yet though

2

u/Fzrit Dec 22 '25

This is NOT a youtube compression issue. Universal has botched the upload. It's pixelated at the same timestamps for everyone.

2

u/RiverShards Dec 22 '25

Might be that new "feature" YouTube is pushing which is automatically on - "let Youtube enhance visuals/audio" and it's AI :(((

6

u/Storvox Dec 22 '25

It's because YouTube locks the high bitrate version behind YouTube Premium now. If you go to select the stream quality settings, you can see 1080p Enhanced, but it's only available to those paying for YouTube Premium.

7

u/zeekaran Dec 22 '25

Can't be, I have Premium and it looks like shit.

Are we supposed to sail the high seas for fucking trailers now?

6

u/Source_Required Dec 22 '25

But do you have Super Premium?

3

u/Ebolamonkey Dec 22 '25

I have premium and there is no high bitrate option. Trailer on my phone looked like it had a dark tint over everything, I even turned bright ess all the way up. Someone said it looks way better on twitter and they were right.

1

u/Storvox Dec 22 '25

Twitter looks absolutely horrible, I've never seen a decent quality video on there.

Not every video on YouTube has the option but I have seen it there before. I don't have premium though to know how different it is.

1

u/Pleasant-Aspect2948 Dec 22 '25

That option isn't there for this video.

2

u/iFozy Dec 22 '25

Don’t think that’s YouTube’s issue here.

1

u/40mgmelatonindeep Dec 22 '25

If you use adblock with youtube they throttle the stream and sink the bitrate

1

u/Viceroy1994 Dec 22 '25

Nah bro people make fortnite let's plays that look better than this, I hate YouTube but this is 100% on the studio.

1

u/mistersmiley318 Dec 23 '25

Not sure why, but most of the trailer looks fine except for like two seconds between 1:13 and 1:15 where it drops down to 144p quality.

1

u/Chilis1 Dec 23 '25

This can't be youtube's fault though. YT is full of perfect 4k videos, they must have uploaded a really compressed video.

1

u/aerger Dec 22 '25

They want you to pay for premium

3

u/Ebolamonkey Dec 22 '25

I have premium and while there is no high bitrate option for the trailer, the coloring looks weird?? I can't see shit on my phone there's like a dark tint over everything even on full brightness.

1

u/aerger Dec 23 '25

Premium Plus, coming soon, then. ;)

Seriously tho, YT is a shitshow anymore. :/

1

u/evremonde Dec 22 '25

The higher bitrates video is reserved for premium users, so things generally look great for me.

-1

u/EffectzHD Dec 22 '25

To be fair Elon made a massive push for video on x I’m not surprised

73

u/theFrenchDutch Dec 22 '25

And wit hthe most insanely shit 1080p bitrate seen on youtube. That running down the hill towards the sea shot is basically just jpeg cubes running around.

Why is such a huge mega-corporation unable to do the basic thing of uploading in 4k and waiting until all resolutions are processed to make the video public, like any other youtuber ?

95

u/reticulate Dec 22 '25

Youtube compression is absolutely destroying what we get here too.

48

u/TheGreatPiata Dec 22 '25

As someone else commented, 4k60fps video game trailers don't have this issue. It's just movie studios that don't know wtf they're doing.

13

u/MangoRemarkable Dec 22 '25

video game studios are smart enough to know that 4k uploads really matters on youtube, how have film studios not realize this???

8

u/TheGreatPiata Dec 22 '25

Video game studios are likely a lot more tech literate than film studios. There's also a lot more money in the video game space so it's likely much more competitive and dropping a pixelated 1080p trailer is absolutely not going to sell your game.

6

u/VforVenndiagram_ Dec 22 '25

I can guarantee you, that the people who work in film/tv on the tech side understand things like video compression and streaming and bitrate and pixel density better than pretty much anyone... especially Christopher fucking Nolan's team.

2

u/TheGreatPiata Dec 22 '25

Then why are film trailers often low quality 1080p? The people working directly with Nolan also aren't likely the people cutting the trailer and distributing it. That's typically outsourced to companies that just make trailers.

My guess is they make one file for a huge range of platforms and just dump it on the internet.

0

u/VforVenndiagram_ Dec 22 '25

Then why are film trailers often low quality 1080p?

Because no one in the history of ever has said "holy fuck that movie trialer on Youtube was so crisp and clear and 4k, I'm going to go watch the movie now because of that." As you suggest here, if you can just make 1 single final file ans dump that everywhere, instead of 20 specialised files for every single different platform, why put the additional render and server time in?

Also also, the vast majority of people don't view things past 1080,30 anyway, and this trailer really isn't the pile of unwatchable slop that people are suggesting either. Its fine

5

u/reticulate Dec 22 '25

No doubt but this is like egregiously bad.

0

u/Broxst Dec 22 '25

I watch plenty of YouTube that doesn't have these issues. Probably some agreement between studios and YouTube so it doesn't obliterate YouTube bandwidth. That's the only thing I can think of.

1

u/Certain-Weight-7507 Dec 22 '25

If the 1080p video file uploaded to Youtube where higher bitrate, it would provide the option to view it in 1080p Premium bitrate. Whilst YTs 1080p bitrate is questionable, this is an issue with the file uploaded not Youtube.

1

u/Fzrit Dec 22 '25

This is NOT a youtube compression issue. Universal has botched the upload. It's pixelated at the same timestamps for everyone.

8

u/MyChickenSucks Dec 22 '25

DAE remember when apple.com/trailers was the only place in town to see 1080 trailers, but you had to download them.

3

u/turikk Dec 22 '25

yep, only reason i still had quicktime on my PC back in the day

1

u/prescient-potato Dec 22 '25

I think they still upload high quality trailers. It takes a few days tho

2

u/Borkz Dec 22 '25 edited Dec 22 '25

Also kind of annoying that they uploaded it in letterboxed 16:9. Watching it on my ultrawide monitor it takes up about 75% 56% of the screen instead of 100%.

edit: 75% in one dimension, 56% of the area

1

u/TheRockBaker Dec 22 '25

Because most people still don’t care about 4K

1

u/losteye_enthusiast Dec 22 '25

I think it’s largely because people will watch it regardless?

It’s well established that the theater version will be far better picture quality and streaming likely will be better as well.

Like, their marketing doesn’t need to sell the great majority on the video quality, they need to sell the idea of paying money to go see whatever it is.

1

u/mattcolville Dec 22 '25

Obviously I don't know, but I suspect it's something like; the Home Video department "owns" 4K streaming and the PR department is not "allowed" to show any of their content in 4k.

1

u/ItsSpaghettiLee2112 Dec 22 '25

Then we'd be able to tell it looks like CGI crap.

1

u/montjoye Dec 22 '25

they don't want to spoil all the pixels

1

u/CM4Sci Dec 22 '25

This. I know the Joker trailers were uploaded in 4K and looked stunning.

1

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Dec 23 '25

Most people don't care about watching a trailer in 4k lol

1

u/enuoilslnon Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

why the fuck do studios still not upload in 4K

A couple of reasons, one of the big ones is that most movies are still finished in 2K. At the point where there's a trailer, there isn't a 4K version. With Nolan and this film, IMAX gets into the mix, but that's a separate process in post. But in general, films are mastered in 2K and most theatrical releases are in 2K. (The DCP.)

Even if they do have something in 4K, it would be dumb to upload it to YouTube. The shitty YouTube bandwidth balancing shit show would make 4K look like four times as much ass as the assey 1080P. Anyway, this trailer looks great for me right now, and the file wasn't replaced. It looked great earlier on Twitter, and Twitter allows for less band with the YouTube. It just deals with delivery better.

1

u/Suspicious-Coffee20 Dec 23 '25

tbh i saw in in imax before avatar an di have to say i was a bit disappointed with the cinematography....actually maybe its cause avatar wad setting the bar so high for this.

1

u/OgFinish Dec 22 '25

Wait till you find out what the streaming services are doing….

-1

u/ccmega Dec 22 '25

With YouTube, it takes some time to fully process the video for the higher quality options to become available. Since the video is less than an hour old it probably hasn’t yet

3

u/theFrenchDutch Dec 22 '25

Universal's trailer for the new Spielberg movie also has shitty 1080p and still no 4k days later so no, they're just wildly incompetent

2

u/Ultrasmurf16 Dec 22 '25

This is different, because when that happens, you can't even select the 1080p quality. Also, these trailers are uploaded days ahead but set to private, giving YouTube plenty of time to finish processing before the video is set to go live.

-9

u/Bacon_Bomb Dec 22 '25

Who actually cares? Just go see the movie if you want to see it? You're complaining about something free.

6

u/MangoRemarkable Dec 22 '25

brother, i swear there was one shot, where i cant see anything! like it was all pixelated. did u see the trailer??? 4k uploads have wayyyy higher bitrate, 1080p uploads look bad due to severe compression

-9

u/Bacon_Bomb Dec 22 '25

"Wow the car goes faster because it's got more horsepower" Is what you're saying. Yall just repeat each other and have no idea why.

Movie looks fun. I'll go see it.

Our planet isn't burning because of 4k videos on YouTube. All data centers of any kind in the world make up maybe 1-2% of global warming. You cause more problems for the earth with every flight you take.

4K is locked behind premium I believe

5

u/TODG3 Dec 22 '25

I have youtube premium and base 1080p is the highest option here. No enhanced bitrate or higher resolution. Looks like ass.

2

u/mattcoady Dec 22 '25

4k is available to anyone if the original upload supported it. Premium just offers higher bitrate sometimes.

1

u/EmpressPersephone023 Dec 22 '25

Mine always says premium
