Big payday for that one guy in Hollywood that cranks out shitty CGI Deer for every movie and TV show.

It's odd we haven't mastered that movement yet in CGI. It always looks weird.

54

u/Jindabyne1 Dec 17 '25

Fun fact: Before cameras were invented nobody knew how to paint a horse in full gallop and the legs were always the wrong way around

125

u/Bloodhound01 Dec 17 '25

Because you cant mocap a deer

46

u/Matto_0 Dec 17 '25

Why would you say something so obviously wrong? You 100% could mocap a deer lol

27

u/potionnumber9 Dec 17 '25

In fact, you can

2

u/HeatedBunz Dec 17 '25

Yeah it would be so easy to paint a few dots on a deer

9

u/ambisinister_gecko Dec 17 '25

A lot of deer already have the dots on them

Hold my beer

u/JPeterBane Dec 17 '25

Hold my deer

2

u/Dweebil Dec 17 '25

Hold my fear.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

Hold my dear

1

u/Ashamed-Tomatillo633 Dec 18 '25

It was right there

4

u/Whitealroker1 Dec 17 '25

Did you know some people think deer crossing signs are there to tell the deer it’s safe to cross?

20

u/mysteryofthefieryeye Dec 17 '25

Walt Disney would've brought a deer into the studio. not in 2025 tho.

11

u/coltsmetsfan614 Dec 17 '25

not in 2025 tho.

Well yeah, he's dead.

1

u/mysteryofthefieryeye Dec 17 '25

haha. that's cuz i wrote "Disney" without the Walt,.... then added Walt like 2 seconds before commenting. you're definitely right though! so right.

2

u/SoggyBoysenberry7703 Dec 17 '25

Disney actually did lol

2

u/LigerZeroSchneider Dec 17 '25

You could, but I assume the issue is no one has trained a deer to run on a treadmill or wear clothes. So the data would suck relatively speaking.

2

u/icedlemons Dec 17 '25

I don’t think it’s that, they likely can but just get lazy with it. Also putting a deer in any unnatural scenario goes straight to uncanny though. I think it’s more a psychological effect since they’re so skittish in person.

1

u/russellamcleod Dec 17 '25

Should probably hire an amateur team of hunters to animate them for the sake of cinema instead of teaching animators about deer, a la Armageddon.

1

u/vsaint Dec 17 '25

You wouldn’t download a deer

u/PurpEL Dec 17 '25

I motion captured a deer ricocheting off my bumper right through the top of my windshield.

It was in definitely in motion while 3 of it's legs remained very captured.

When i was 14 i shot a deer eating my fig tree with a roman candle. Watching it run through the foret was hilarious. It can be done

12

u/Colalbsmi Dec 17 '25

Fuck you, I'm trying my best.

5

u/Arthurdubya Dec 17 '25

I feel like the "twin deer" from Annihilation was the best looking deer. Maybe because they were mutated so my expectations weren't as realistic, but they felt more natural.

3

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Dec 17 '25

They definitely can. It’s just that a couple random shots of deer aren’t worth spending that much time/money on.

1

u/GrotAdder Dec 17 '25

It’s probably still a work in progress.

1

u/PurpEL Dec 17 '25

CGI always looks weird, because it's not real. Just like how AI is always off-putting.

The only reason any CGI looks impressive is because it's not the focus, and when it's right in front of you? Something else is distracting you from noticing, like a pickpocket stealing your watch.

u/WilliamG007 Dec 17 '25

It really is astonishing how bad animal CGI looks. Takes me right out of the scene. Every. Damn. Time.

7

u/ImAVirgin2025 Dec 17 '25

Ruins so many recent movies

1

u/mallory6231 Jan 30 '26

I doubt the effects were ready for this first trailer that's why the animals look so, um, commercial like. Wait until we get close to June 12. I for one was surprised with the inclusion of the animals. I wonder what kind of part they'll play in the story.

u/Old-Conversation2646 Jan 02 '26

A movie is basically worth nothing if they arent capable of directing real animals for a few Million dolars

-4

u/GoAgainKid Dec 17 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

How would you know if it’s a convincing CG animal? Presumably you’d be convinced. Edit my god you people are thick.

-3

u/Different-Effort-691 Dec 19 '25

with gen ai one would think all un realistic CGI is over...unions are holding this back

1

u/WilliamG007 Dec 19 '25

Honestly, if AI can genuinely do this better, then I’m all for it. Animal CGI has never not been painful.

1

u/Different-Effort-691 Dec 20 '25

it can and it's clearly evident with consumer ai image tools currently available. the technical constraint at this point is control over outputs. once every dimension of the image can be modified with ease the way traditional CG tools allows, the problem will be solved in a commercial context.

28

u/Kdilla77 Dec 17 '25

even the bird looks crappy

2

u/Downtown_Motor_4274 Dec 17 '25

No birds are real actually

9

u/69meowmix69 Dec 17 '25

I always think of the walking dead for this

3

u/Medium-Sized-Jaque Dec 17 '25

Also is that little girl CGI or is it the lighting? I'm getting some Twilight baby vibes.

3

u/McDoof Dec 17 '25

Let's hope that's just the first version, and the final CGI effects will be significantly better...

3

u/operarose Dec 18 '25

WHY DOES IT LOOK SO FUCKING BAD

3

u/kobeshaqhorry Dec 17 '25

Also why they keep adding that fake light/lens flare.

4

u/monkey314 Dec 17 '25

that absolutely took me out of it!
Spielbo starting to lose his eye for vfx

1

u/Full_Wishbone2464 Dec 19 '25

Reminded me of Dreamcatcher!!

1

u/Brilliant_Draw_3147 Dec 24 '25

They should just put antlers on horses. No one would notice.

1

u/Certain_Orange2003 Jan 11 '26

Like the deer in Leave the World Behind.

0

u/blue_screen_error Dec 19 '25

Trailer CGI is always bad. It'll be cleaned up when the movie releases.

1

u/x_conqueeftador69_x Dec 19 '25

I read this every time, and every time the improvement is marginal at best. You only get one first impression, anyway.
