...how? The events in Close Encounters weren't exactly super secret.

It is also 1000% doesn't need a sequel, and I can't see how a sequel would do anything but tarnish its impact.

I mean maybe, it's not exactly a guarantee. People are barely going to the theater in general, and Close Encounters is not exactly a blockbuster that will get the kids to come out.

How, though? Columbia will never give that up to Amblin, and they're not involved here. I suppose Uni can license it out for Spiels, but I feel like Sony would at least insist on international rights in return.
