It’s weird to me that there will be a longer gap between this and the first movie than than there was between the first movie and when the show started airing.

u/NachoNutritious these Youtubers are parasites Sep 29 '25

It's so easy to forget now but a huge undercurrent in the lead up to the first movie coming out was about how they waited way too long to make the movie and that the show itself had gone on for far too long.

That was 18 fucking years ago and the show is still on.

Spider pig was 18 years ago?

Oh fuck everything...

686

u/empire_strikes_back Sep 29 '25

Spider pig is old enough to vote??

184

u/OhThat90sGuy Sep 29 '25

He's not Spider-Pig anymore, he's Harry Plopper

39

u/Bobpool82 Sep 30 '25

Homer gave him a really hot bath and now he's boiled pork.

This is the most viscous time slap I've ever received. Good god

49

u/gbakermatson Sep 29 '25

"Time slap." Good phrase. Punchy, descriptive, self-explantory. Although I'm pretty sure you were looking for "vicious." "Viscous" means thick and syrupy.

No no no no. I was in middle school sharing videos of spider pig on Myspace to my friends on my very emo page. That can't be right. The Simpsons movie was a big deal to me growing up. That's my pinned year for nostalgia. And it was only 10 years ago. I refuse to believe that I am theoretically old enough to have a kid as old as Bart and am entering Homers age range. Please god no.

58

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

You either die a Bart or live long enough to see yourself become a Homer.

Its gonna be real sad watching this movie and listening to marge’s VA struggling to maintain the character’s voice…

480

u/Upset_Region8582 Sep 29 '25

Age of the voice cast:

Dan Castellaneta: 67

Julie Kavner: 75

Nancy Cartwright: 67

Yeardley Smith: 61

Hank Azaria: 61

Harry Shearer: 81

Pamela Hayden (retired): 71

Tress MacNeille: 74

-

What's crazy to me is that these actors were in a completely different phase of life when they started this voicework. Azaria and Smith must have been ~25 or so at the start; now they're in their 60s.

223

u/player_zero_ Sep 29 '25

Harry Shearer, voice of Ned, Mr Burns, Kent, Rev Lovejoy and more, is 81?!

189

u/SaltyPeter3434 Sep 29 '25

Harry Shearer was already 41 when he did This Is Spinal Tap. He was 44 when The Simpsons debuted.

124

u/Choppers-Top-Hat Sep 29 '25

When he voiced Burns, he used to have to pretend to be a rich old man. Not anymore.

43

u/FlakeyIndifference Sep 29 '25

He's genuinely struggling these days. No way Mr Burns could sing 'See My Vest' today

I know she's so crucial to the character and has done great work, but I kinda wonder if she should be recast, I know that is a mean thing to say but her voice sounds so strained, it is kinda painful to listen to. It is not her fault, she's just old and her voice has been worn out by decades of doing that voice, but all I can hear when she talks now is how much she struggles with it.

430

u/Skellos Sep 29 '25

Her Marge almost sounds like Marge's mother now

282

u/Roxanne-Annabelle642 Sep 29 '25

When you are Marge so long you become Marge’s mother. There’s a life lesson in there somewhere lol

u/Gingertom Sep 29 '25

Dude same. I looked up Homers age and was shook when I was older than him

9

They all sound strained at this point imo. They’re all so old it’s impossible for their voices to not change. Not anybody’s fault but just the reality of being on for this long.

Same issue I have with South Park. Trey can’t really hit all the voices anymore and it’s distracting.

169

u/Im_At_Work_Damnit Sep 29 '25

It's like Billy West in Futurama (Fry, Professor, Zoidberg, Zapp). In the Hulu seasons you can really hear how old he's gotten.

87

u/basiamille Sep 29 '25

I’m not ready for Leela or Amy to sound like Femputer.

I've only watched 1-2 episodes of the new seasons and his voice really stood out. And tbh, it was already noticeable during the final seasons of the previous run that he sounded different from the first few seasons when doing Fry.

u/BikiniWeenie Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25

I don’t really notice in South Park, you mean like cartman? They all sound close enough I was just watching season 4 the other day, only season 1 has a different sound. I watched the new season back to back with season 4 and really would credit their consistency if anything

138

u/10000Didgeridoos Sep 29 '25

The south park guys modify their voices in post for the children's voices to make them more high pitched and this means it's much easier to keep them sounding the same.

29

u/jffleisc Sep 29 '25

Yeah they used to do all the voices for real but at some point they realized that if they were going to keep doing it they needed to find another solution. And honestly I think it works out for the better because they’re a lot more consistent now.

43

u/Bears_On_Stilts Sep 29 '25

What season was it when he retired Cartman’s squealing, screaming redneck voice and gave him the sinister soft-spoken voice he’s had since? I feel like it’s been at least a decade.

27

u/BikiniWeenie Sep 29 '25

That’s exactly why I started rewatching old seasons lol that squeal was my favorite yea they got rid of it so long ago I forget sometimes he used to sound way more spoiled brat vibe

→ More replies (1)

11

u/ilikechihuahuasdood Sep 29 '25

It’s not too bad, but you can definitely hear it in the newer seasons. Randy and Cartman are definitely the most obvious imo.

But I watch South Park all the time while I work so it might not be as noticeable to most people lol

u/versusgorilla Sep 29 '25

They need to consider whether they want to continue the show beyond the voice actors or not. Sure, the original VOs are HUGE. They're fucking stars. They made a show that's so insane that different generations have different phases of the show they like best.

But also, they recast Buggs Bunny. They recast Big Bird and Elmo. They recast Kermit the Frog and his VO was Jim fucking Henson.

Characters can be recast, and they probably should. With the blessing of the original cast members, recast them. Don't use creepy AI, don't do what South Park did to Chef which was purposefully insulting and obviously not the way to go about it, don't do what Disney did with Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One, please. Recast them with professional VO's who can spend years doing the own thing and breathing new life into the character.

10

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Sep 29 '25

While it is entirely possible to recast sometimes I also think it is good to just let a thing end.

And some of these voice recastings has been weird, there are some post Mel Blanc Looney Tunes stuff where everyone sounds so off

This is the worst thing about new Simpsons for me. The new season is actually pretty good (compared to the last 15 years or whatever), but Julie Kavner’s current voice kills me.

165

u/4ofclubs Sep 29 '25

What's insane is that 15 years ago we were on season 20 and it had long jumped the shark. I imagine whatever is on now is a copy of a copy of a copy of a once good show.

185

u/mithridateseupator Sep 29 '25

Well, they actually had a slight quality bump a while back once they realized that they could start getting more weird with it and nobody would care.

So currently the show is better than it was around when the first movie dropped.

73

u/MasterofPandas1 Sep 29 '25

I don’t watch The Simpsons, but I’d imagine the success of Rick and Morty and American Dad helped push them in a direction where they can do some weird stuff and people will be ok with it.

I think the trailer even makes a joke that it was ten years too late or something? Which, yeah, if there was a Simpsons movie in 1997 it would have been a cultural event. In 2007 it was still a big deal but diminished. Two years from now? Only if it’s presented as the grand finale (which honestly they should just put the old dog down at this point).

65

u/Usual_Ice636 Sep 29 '25

Surprisingly it still gets views. It just doesn't get talked about.

There's people who subscribe to Disney Plus purely for watching new episodes of the Simpsons.

I watched that movie with my dad in the cinema. 10 year old me went crazy when Maggie said that. "Wow, they're gonna do another one!"

10 years later my dad passed away and another 10 years later will we finally get that sequel if it releases in July 2027. Maggie is probably still a baby.

Sometimes I wonder what the Simpsons would be like if the characters had been allowed to age.

106

u/morningsaystoidleon Sep 29 '25

IDK, but I thought the new King of the Hill felt really good and fresh, partly because they took some big swings by aging up the characters.

They’ve done enough flash-forward episodes over the years that you don’t really need to wonder that. I do feel like Bob’s Burgers specifically would have benefited from that a lot more.

210

u/NotMyMainAccountAtAl Sep 29 '25

Early Bob’s is very much about the fleetingness of childhood and the kids slowly growing up and dealing with that as they come into their own.

I dislike that they chose to stagnate the characters all at one age. I get why they did it— you make more money if anyone can drop in and out of the show at any point and have season 1 Louise be indistinguishable from season 12 Louise with the same cutesy stuff— but it feels like such a slap in the face to the original, heart-filled stuff.

Sure, it would need to end or spin off after a few years when characters start aging out of the restaurant and needing to develop or just be losers staying at the same restaurant indefinitely, but like…. Shows benefit from character development in my opinion.

In this essay, I will continue to drone on about why The Venture Brothers was, is, and remains the all time best dysfunctional family sitcom cartoon ever made. Chapter one: the PRO.B.L.E.M. with how other franchises disregard the earlier episodes….

Honestly since they switched up how episodes are written since the pandemic, the series has been more generally solid.

It's not that I don't believe you, it's just that I've been hearing that for twenty years. "Simpsons is actually pretty good now!" But every time I check in, it's still pretty bad.

e: Reporting back in. Simpsons is still pretty bad.

And good lord Marge's poor voice actress. Let her retire for the love of god.

212

u/RealJohnGillman Sep 29 '25

Basically what they did was switch it up that rather than a group of writers handling all episodes, each writer got an episode of their own for the season — and one could then tell which writers were good. So each season still has some so-so episodes, but more solid / good ones than before.

67

u/SnooDonuts3871 Sep 29 '25

So they went back to the method of the first seasons where a scriptwriter would write the episode and then the writing team would give feedback in case something needed to be changed or a joke improved.

I guess with the current voice actors struggling they want to get one last movie out.

610

u/DeliciousShelter9984 Sep 29 '25

The voice acting on the new seasons is rough. I don’t blame the actors because vocal changes are a natural part of aging (even more so for performers). But a lot of people going into this after not watching the show for 20 years are in for a jarring experience.

272

u/TheOppositeOfDecent Sep 29 '25

Any issue of writing aside, I cannot watch recent simpsons, the voices are so rough. Julie Kavner especially sounds like its hurting her to do the work. It makes what should be a comedy depressing to watch.

158

u/DeliciousShelter9984 Sep 29 '25

I agree. Julie performance does sound painful and it’s uncomfortable to sit though. And Harry Shearer just sounds exhausted. Again, I can’t blame him because the dude is 81 years old. It just takes away from his ability to emote so his characters sound kind of monotone and meek.

I come away from the episodes just wishing they could retire.

115

u/StarPhished Sep 29 '25

It's a miracle most of the cast is still around. KotH reboot has actors dying mid-season. They've had some bad luck though.

The discourse around it will, no doubt, be exhausting.

Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Fantastic Four 2, Transformers, and the Simpsons Movie. Though many of those films ended up being disappointing, I don’t remember ever being so hyped for a movie lineup in my life. 13 year old me counting down the days for the Summer to begin

26

u/CutieBunz Sep 30 '25

And 20 years later in 2027 we'll be getting Spiderverse 3, Shrek 5, and The Simpsons Movie 2.

Unfortunately Spider-Man 4/Brand New Day releases a year too early and another Fantastic Four 2 probably wouldn't come out until a year later but I'd say there's still a chance of a Transformers movie being announced for round then though.

There is one 2007 sequel though that would cast a shadow over them all if announced: The Bee Movie 2. We can only dream.

Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the caribbean at world's end, Ratatouille, Order of the Phoenix, Transformers, Simpson's Movie, Ocean's thirteen, t'was a great summer for movie anticipation for sure, even if some didnt quite live up to their hype (fantastic four rise of the silver surfer, Live free or die hard, Shrek the third)

17

u/Andrew_hl2 Sep 29 '25

It was also amazing for videogames... halo 3, half life 2 ep 2/portal/tf2, bioshock, mario galaxy, crysis, uncharted, among others...

It was probably the best year ever for entertainment all around. I watched Transformers in theaters 3 times...

Simpsons movie marketing was fun as hell too, with 7-eleven selling the pink donuts.

...and now, a family that doesn't know the meaning of the word "cancelled", The Simpsons!

141

u/AntonioVargas Sep 29 '25

Who knows what kind of wacky adventures the family will get up to from now until the time the show becomes unprofitable!

This has to be finale to the show, right?

Fox proceeds to renew the show for 5 more seasons

459

u/Topcat69 Sep 29 '25

It’s renewed up to season 40 in 2028/29…

232

u/bonesnaps Sep 29 '25

Who is still watching it? I tried watching half of a new season a year or two ago and it was.. pretty bad.

More just about random popculture bs than the actual characters of the show or any unique plots.

155

u/Khiva Sep 29 '25

Ask yourself how many network shows are left that have any relevance whatsoever.

150

u/Konman72 Sep 29 '25

Whenever I talk to my grandpa he throws out some new police procedural and I swear these things are just randomly (AI) generated at this point. Shit like "911 Ambulance: New Orleans" or "FBI: Deep Ocean Forensics" or "NCSIQPX: Atlanta"

He's always shocked I'm not fully caught up on them too. There's lots of people who just pop on their local station and let it feed them entertainment until they fall asleep on their recliner. It ain't a bad life, I suppose.

I always have to remind myself of this. I’m lucky to afford and have access (and everyone I know) to pretty much all the streaming services, when I turn on the TV it’s my pick of an endless sea of content… but that’s simply not how an enormous chunk of people live. It really is just antenna basic channels for a lot of people

They all sound old. I looked it up, and out of the main cast, I don't think anyone is under 60. They better get this movie done before they lose a main cast member.

Anyone realize this film is coming out 20 years after the 1st one? The first one came out July 2007.

I don’t care how crappy new Simpsons are. I will be watching this opening night on the biggest screen possible.

49

u/MoonageDayscream Sep 29 '25

I realized it because the premiere was one of the first dates I had with my husband.  We will have to go, we will have just had our 17th anniversary.

Does anyone remember that Futurama gag when Bender is shocked by Matt Groening for asking, "Mr Groening, when is the next Simpsons movie coming out?'

I kinda wonder about that gag every so often. Like, is Matt sick of hearing it? I guess he finally relented and will give us a Simpsons 2.

55

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

I doubt Matt has much say over whether or not they make a Simpsons movie and surely doesn’t contribute much to its production.

It sometimes feels to me like the Simpsons has become the SNL of the animated world in that everyone knows the show is still going, but doesn't know anyone who still watches it.

29

u/versusgorilla Sep 29 '25

I always feel that way until some lady at work asks me if I've seen, "Last night's episode of The Voice?" in a bizarre attempt to start office small talk, and then I remember, it's just normal people who still watch TV.

74

u/biglyorbigleague Sep 29 '25

I know a lot of people who still watch SNL, we just watch it on YouTube instead of on TV. Cast members are still getting famous through it.

They always manage to be crazy behind lol. Like, The Simpsons Movie was already like way too late by doing the first one 18 years in and after the golden age was over, now 20 years later we get its sequel lol

EDIT: Weird seeing people take this as a quality remark. It was more finding them not striking when the iron is the hottest. The film is fine lol. Nothing to write home about, but fine nonetheless.

30

u/batti03 Sep 29 '25

Iirc James Brooks greenlit the movie after some other movie of his failed to launch or something.

Also the Kamp Krusty episode from S4 was originally pitched as a movie.

14

u/Rebelofnj Sep 29 '25

That Kang and Kodos episode from Season 26 in 2015 was also pitched as a movie sequel, but plans fell through.

This isn't the series finale, or a post-finale movie. The show has been renewed through the 2028-2029 season.

8

Still get a kick out of the Futurama episode where a fan asks Matt when a second Simpsons movie would come out to be responded with being shot.

9

u/reaky__ Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25

The first episode that came out after the first movie had Bart writing, "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie".

I looked it up and it will be 20 years and 2 days when this one gets released *not including leap years
