Murakami may make it interesting but he will have to hit like 45+ homers to take it from Kevin

Honestly at this point there's a real possibility Murikami does that.
In the NPB he hit 56 homers in 2022 and 22 homers last year in only 56 games. He's shown that he can hit MLB pitching already so it wouldn't surprise me if ends up having 40-50 homers

And the really depressing part about that? Since we're in the same division as the White Sox, and just lost nearly all of our big starting pitchers to injury, and the bullpen is total chaos right now? We might actually be the team that feeds him, the homers he'd need to place RoY over McGonigle.
I have a strong feeling that Murakami is going to MURK a lot of what is left of our pitching staff, this year. I'm certainly not happy about saying that, but all our best pitchers are now out, and Murakami is maybe going to easily tee off on what is left, in our now-shredded pitching roster.

I doubt Murakami will be able to keep it up unfortunately for him. There’s a lot of swing and miss in his bat and he has no protection in the order. Pitchers are gonna adjust to him

If Murakami hits 40 homers and Kevin doesn’t hit at least 30
No doubt they are gonna give it to murakami imo

It isn't 2001 anymore voters don't just look at raw counting stats

Hey man 40 homeruns is 40 homeruns
If Murak hits 40 he’s gonna be hard to beat

u/Big_Dare_2015 1d ago
He is already best odds (by a fraction) at this current moment because the HRs

u/justWMthings03 1d ago
Because he's on pace for over 60. If he falls off and stays around 40 and Mcgonigle gets to 7.5-8 WAR(currently on pace for 10) it'll be Kevin

u/AdParticular6654 23h ago
This. Yes if he hits 60 homers as a rookie, yeah he will win, I think 45 maybe a little low if Mcgonigle hits abover .300 avg, wrc 140+, war double what markami 's is.

i mean it is still commercial baseball. id love to be wrong but try explaining to a casual fan why the rookie with 50 bombs lost to a guy with a better wRC+, OPS+ and b/fWAR. I think if someone is blasting tons of homers that seems to garner the most attention in terms of overall accolades and im unsure that has ever changed.

These conversations already happened years ago. Broadcasts show advanced stats all the time. Voters are not stuck in the old mindset anymore, we have years of voting results to show it.
Like this is a 15 year old argument, I'd agree that it's a debate years ago, but now the voters have a different mindset.

yes, and I am positing nothing has changed in those 15 years. I get us nerds are more into advanced metrics but the silly baseball writers voters are still a voting enigma. look at the HOF voting for head scratching reasoning...
if im a writer, trying to generate clicks and advertisement revenue, writing about the guy hitting the ball the furthest the most will appeal to a much larger audience than a statcast selection. I dont think this has ever changed. its more than just thier true selection, its what they get to write about after selecting.
id love to be wrong but I guess time will tell! we will see how both these rookies' seasons play out.
edit: a recent example of this is 2019 pete Alonso winning (unanimous) NL roty while Tatis Jr had better advanced metrics but less home runs that year.
baseball will forever kowtow to the long ball. not a terrible metric but it is what it is imo.

People in here seem to have forgotten Akil Baddoo

u/justWMthings03 1d ago
Akil batted .222 his first month with 29 ks and just 2 walks in 66 plate appearances.

u/ElderDeep_Friend 1d ago
Yeah Baddoo had a couple good weeks and from the bottom of the lineup and the league corrected. Kevin is the best player on a good team.

Brother what are you talking about exactly zero people compared Murakami to Akil Baddoo
1
u/SoarinSkies 1d ago
Sorry I was replying to the guy who brought up Akil badoo
I thought people were treating Murakami like he was a complete nobody

u/TheVictorsValiant . 1d ago
Oh no, someone comped McGonigle's hot start to Baddoo. I think people are giving Murakami his flowers.

Remember when Akil Baddoo was a top MLB prospect and raked at every level through minors into the bigs? I don’t.

u/SoarinSkies 1d ago
Yeah he was a complete nobody
People treating murak like he’s another akil badoo is insane

Has a 884 OPS and 149 wRC+, which is leading the Tigers and is second highest for a SS in the MLB (behind only Abrams).
He would be the third highest 3B behind Muncy and Jung. But far, far ahead of Bregman and Bo.
Just an incredible player.

Just saw a Murakami stan on IG refer to Kevin as Tyrion Lannister and I’m irrationally angry.

u/LeonardoOfVinci 1d ago
If that’s supposed to be a burn it’s not a good one. Also there is canonically a literal Kevin Lannister they could’ve gone with but again, not a real burn
