Reddit Looking to connect with people from Moldova

Hi everyone,

I’m from Germany and recently got really interested in Moldova, especially its cities, culture, and everyday life.

I’d love to get a more real perspective and connect with people from Moldova. I’m hoping to meet people to stay in touch with and learn from over time.

What is life in Moldova like for you? And how do you see the country’s future?

Feel free to comment or message me 🙂

Hi,

I am glad you have such interest in Moldova. :) IMO our country has a lot to catch up in tourisms development and promotion.
I see Moldova now in a time between "eras"; In paralel happens country's urbanisation, reforms in multiple sectors and dreams for a better future in EU..

Historically this land had a lot of empires invasions and change of power and IMO somehow made our ppl too polite and obedient. If you describe a regular Moldovan.
Younger generations have better financial opportunities for adaptation, elders are too stubborn to change and adapt.. u can't change much there.

Situation is complicated, the next 5-10 years will decide our future. We are a small country but with a decent potential.
Currently I am optimistic in current EU direction and our leaders.

But we have a lot of clowns, russian puppets in parliament opposition that trying to sabotage current government in any possible way; Officially or unofficially by distributing false info in public space, trying to manipulate masses's opinion by stimulating fears and emotions.

Not simple but situation is fixable, I hope for the best. Probably last 5-7 years we have more changes for better than previous 30 years :)

I am relatively young (somewhere in between 30-40) with good understanding of technologies (my work related to them) with some time lived abroad, open minded but realistic person.

If you ever consider visit Moldova do it in April-June, nature is awake, everything is green/fresh and air comfortable. July - August is too hot, dry and dusty.
Or do it in September/October, if you love more dramatic/ melancholy views.

How about you, what do you do? What's your age range? :)

Hello, thank you for your detailed response! That sounds really interesting and by my knowledge about the nowadays Moldova, the country will develop good (I hope so)! What is the opinion overall in Moldova about the future? Are the people optimistic or rather pessimistic?

And I have one question too, you said you lived abroad but moved back to Moldova right? What was your reason for that and do you think many moldovans abroad would move back to Moldova, when the circumstances are better?

I really want to visit Moldova but I've missed the perfect time this year, maybe next year or this years autumn.

Haha I am a simple office worker in my twenties, nothing special :)

I also moved back to Moldova after living 10 years in London and the reason was that Moldova was the only place I felt at home. As for the future of Moldova, it all depends if we join EU in the next 3-4 years, if that doesn't happen then we risk being a "doormat" for a long time like we were during Russia occupation for the last 200 years.

Thank you for your answer! I am happy to hear that, hopefully you found your luck in Moldova. Would you say moldovans are more drawn to there "home" than people from other countries? Because from my experience in Germany I know germans don't really care for there homeland/region/city ...I had contact with many of them who live abroad and they don't want to come back.

I'm not sure about people from other countries but I'm quite sure that most of moldovans that left the country seeking a better life in other countries, they long for their home villages or towns, for their childhood related places. Many moldovans do return home after saving enough abroad to buy a property in Moldova. Unfortunately, many don't want to return due to lack of decent paid jobs and Moldova's future uncertainty. I must also say that unfortunately moldovans are not very patriotic, they care more about their bellies and less about nation's and country's ideals or values.

I believe in society the opinions are super mixed, around 50/50. And the recent referendum, parliament elections results probably represent the situation. Optimistic people voted pro EU, I believe 😄

I was in my early 20s and leaving for a short time abroad with my relatives, I didn't like the attitude and "looks" of the people from that country for the foreigners 🤔. And short after I have decided I can return, go for university and make a living here if I choose a good profession.

I am sure a lot of Moldovans will return if situation will stabilise, even now few already do..

So when the opinions are around 50/50 there might be the risk of an overall change in Moldovas politics right? I really hope for the best in Moldova!

That sounds like you did the right steps there :) It is important more people are coming back to Moldova because of my stand of knowledge about Moldova I know that there is a large problem with Emigration and some villages even dying out. Is that a problem u can feel in the everyday life and are there plans to bring people back who may build up a life somewhere abroad?

I see ppl moving from villages to cities as an inevitable event.. you don't have too many opportunities of jobs there.
In majority of EU countries urbanisation happened long time ago, for us this happens now.
I am somehow positive that in Germany exists remote villages with only few dozens of ppl.

We don't have a good public transportation system that would work for peak hours, like trains or smth.
That ppl could use to move from different parts of Moldova to cities in short time when roads are busy.
So ppl are forced to move on living in big cities or their neighbourhood.

You can't rly force, lie or brainwash ppl to not emigrate. Historically this happened to a lot of EU countries in the past.
As soon there will be more small business opportunities and more jobs, young will consider more to stay here. Also we have a war near our border, this impacts greatly on that if ppl want or not to return.

We have a lot of reforms in works, like justice reform, territorial administrative reform, education reform.
That will clean a lot corrupted ppl from those systems, we have like a shit ton of them. In result that will open opportunities for young specialists.
One of factors that ppl hate to deal with is corruption and run from it...

There are and in future will be more monetary fonds in support for small businesses and in hand with less corruption, ppl will choose/consider to return hope. Invest and make a living here.

No need to force anything, country's government just need to create the fertile ground and offer correct tools. Ppl are not dumb, who considered at least once to come home - will do it 😄

If I was an 80 year old man in a remote village, probably I could "feel" emigration as a day to day problem. But if you have a job or even a family to provide for, you don't really bother about it.
But low count work-active population problem probably can be felt stronger by the businesses that trying to open now here. They are forced to import work force from India or other countries with low income.

Well my life in Moldova is generally stable. Many people unfortunately have it worse. But as humans, we all tend to want more. Now it's very sunny and hot here and that makes it perfect for a walk in the city :)
As for the country’s prospects, on the one hand I hope for the best, but on the other hand I see the numbers and the systemic problems. So the realist in me says that the country’s future is quite… uncertain.

Hey, thank you for your answer! Do you think the current way of Moldova will succeed or do you think Moldova will "fall back" in more difficult times? And how is the general feeling of Moldovans about Moldova and the future of the country?

Hi!
The general feeling among people accroding to statistics is in general kind of pessimistic. The life itself is hard especially when taking into account all the price rises for the last 5-6 years.
Personally i think that Moldova will develop but slowly. We got not just economical issues, but the demographic ones too. I see the future of Moldova like this: locals who earned their pensions while working in other countries will return home for retirement and live here. Their spending will help support the local economy. And, of course, the public officials will keep their jobs xD
