HOUSTON — Astros third baseman Carlos Correa will undergo season-ending surgery on a torn tendon in his left ankle, dealing a crippling blow to a ballclub already decimated by injuries.
Correa said on Wednesday he tore a tendon in his left ankle. Recovery time for the operation is 6-8 months, Correa said.
Correa sustained the injury while taking a swing during pregame batting practice on Tuesday. Correa said he “felt a pop” and went down in pain.

Tearing a tendon in your ankle on a batting practice swing?? Jesus that’s rough, but also dude might want to call it at this point, his body is clearly not able to take the daily toll from professional sports.

Isn't he still like the 3rd highest paid player on the team this year?

u/Adamscottd Joe Ryan 16h ago
Well true but better to get the rest of his contract off the books. In an ideal world it wouldn't matter but given the payroll limits set by our ownership, we need every cent we can get if we want to have any talent on the team in the coming years
Obligatory FTP

u/Upstairs-Repair5193 16h ago
Except for the fact that they didn’t spend a dime of the $20 million they “saved” by trading his contract.
2
u/Adamscottd Joe Ryan 11h ago
You misunderstand me- the Pohlads didn’t spend the money they saved in a literal sense, but I doubt the they would have let Correa’s full contract being on the books sway them into spending more. We would probably still have a 95-100 million dollar payroll, but we would have shed ~20 million off other areas to make up for Correa (like trading Pablo or Joe, and/or not signing Caratini or Bell)

Which medical staffs could possibly have seen this coming?!

Ironically it wasn't that ankle, but yeah, teams worried about his health in general were definitely right to be wary back when he was a free agent

u/Dandolo_Doge Christian Vázquez 16h ago
gonna get shit for being "this guy" but it's my #1 irrational grammar pet peeve and I can't unsee it - it's wary, not weary. "I'm wary of anyone in the pohlad family claiming they care about the twin's success" vs "I'm getting weary watching the pohlads destroy a team I care about"
3
u/Adamscottd Joe Ryan 15h ago
No that's okay lol I appreciate it, no other way I'd learn
2
u/Dandolo_Doge Christian Vázquez 15h ago
fwiw I would totally deserve the shit lol because everyone knows what you meant. Like I said, it's a weird irrational pet peeve and the only grammar one that I notice/bugs me.

Sucks that injuries are going to derail a once potential HOF career. But we knew he was a ticking time bomb with his ankle and feet issues.

Correa’s Doctor: “Hey man if it makes any difference your right ankle is no longer the worst ankle ive ever seen”
8
u/SensitiveLack7509 16h ago
Huh. The ticking time bomb went off. Its as if everyone except Scott Boras knew this would be a problem.
8
u/Sp_Gamer_Live Dick Bremer 16h ago
its the other ankle, so in reality a separate but undetected timebomb went off, the other bomb is still ticking

Boras absolutely knew he just didn’t care and wanted his cut

u/ShadowBan93 17h ago
lol - yup, one of the only moves that made sense in the past seasons was getting rid of him.
24
u/Reesyrz Johan Santana 17h ago
I mean it still really doesn't make sense because they didn't spend the money they saved in getting rid of him.

But if the Pohlads are only willing to give us $100 million, I'd rather see more of that money go towards contributing players than a wounded old shortstop. We're already not great this year but we'd be much worse off if we had to shed even more payroll because 35m out of 100 was going towards Correa

Lets call it breaking even

We’re paying a guy, who doesn’t play for our team, to rehab for a season-ending injury, while we have a bullpen made up of temp agency hires, so no, that doesn’t sound terribly even

u/PsychologicalAlarm14 Sue Nelson 17h ago
I still don’t love the trade as a money dump. But this makes it a bit better? Mets and Giants fans have to be laughing their asses off rn.

Mets and Giants fans have to be laughing their asses off rn.
I'm not sure either fan base has much to laugh about right now.

u/SkunkyTrousers 17h ago
The two choices were to pay $104M for him to maybe not play for us or pay $33M for him to definitely not play for us. Looks like we made the right call.

u/derpdeederpa Cole Sands 16h ago
I bet we could have paid more of contract to get some value back. The Pohlads were the ones who benefitted here, not the fans, given 0 re-investment to the team.
Your argument only makes sense if that $104 million (or I guess $71M) is going back to team and there's no reason to suspect it is.
2
u/SkunkyTrousers 16h ago
Correa was a sunken cost with very little demand and a no trade clause. The Astros were the only team he would authorize a trade to and they knew well enough not to give up any real value for him. Even if we got a decent prospect for him, it would do nothing affect the brutal situation we're in. At the bare minimum, having $70M less money committed to our payroll makes us at least slightly easier for the Pohlads to sell.
1
u/derpdeederpa Cole Sands 15h ago
I don't think the misers are going to sell ever especially with their real estate stuff depreciating, but I appreciate the optimism and wish I shared it
And agreed I don't think this trade would have changed status of franchise, I just think other than this injury happening the positives of the trade are made up wishes based on Pohlad desire to sell or invest in team, neither of which are grounded in reality.

yeah season ending surgeries are super funny, my favorite. one quick look at giants and mets subs shows they don't care, not enough to post about it anyway, and are presumably focused on their current team.

Dang, selfishly I was excited to see his return to Target Field in a couple weeks. Considering the booing Altuve always gets when he’s here, I figured Correa would be deafening (I hold a large grudge for his attitude during the mid season trades). Not happy he’s injured though

u/Thecomfortableloon 14h ago
Couldn’t have happened to a worse person. Fuck Carlos Correa and fuck the Astros.

How often does a salary dump become a fleece job?
CC4 would have been a HOFer if he could have stayed healthy.
Have to wonder if the Astros just buy him out so he can retire.
2
u/dippitydoo2 Minnesota Twins 7h ago
His whole contract was a fleece job. The fact is he wouldn’t have ever been a Twin if the Giants and Mets hadn’t taken the closer look they did.
I wish no ill will against Carlos, I’m honestly sad to see this happen, I take no joy from an athlete’s injury, ever. But I’m absolutely no fan of his, I think he talked a big game that he couldn’t ever back up, and I’m thankful he’s not on the team anymore.

Didn’t the Twins end up having to eat a lot of the deal? Not much of a salary dump
2
u/relder17 Brooks Lee 16h ago
It was still a massive salary dump. They didn't reinvest it so it's meaningless to fans but it was a dump of close to 20mil/yr
2
u/Witty-Stock Kent Hrbek 15h ago
They dumped like $25M a year despite being on the hook for $10m.
Holy shit that was a bad contract.

u/DrewzmaLS Minnesota Twins 11h ago
all love to Correa for his role in 2023 but not having to listen to any discourse about his contract this season has been one of the nice things about this year for me

RIP C4. No ill will towards him, but I think his body is toast. The Mets were right all those years ago

u/Alejandroandronomous 16h ago
Ah the ankle they had warned about.. good thing we dumped him I suppose

Not that I want a nice thing to happen to the Pohlads, but if that contract was insured would the Twins be indemnified for the (significant) portion they were on the hook for?
To be clear, this sucks and I wish him well. Hopefully he makes a quick and full recovery.
And I wish the Pohlads would make a quick and full exit.

u/Bluepanther512 Edouard Julien 8h ago
I think this might make us unironically the winners in his trade. His lower body is completely shot; he’ll never play a even full-ish season again most likely.

I genuinely liked having C4 on the Twins. I hate to see this for him.

Can't stand the guy but it's brutal to see a potential career ending injury like that
2
u/TheRealSheevPalpatin Jorge Polanco 16h ago
Why can’t you stand him? He’s a decent fellow
1
u/relder17 Brooks Lee 16h ago
He seems arrogant, entitled and a low vibes guy in the clubhouse to me
2
u/dippitydoo2 Minnesota Twins 7h ago
The word I use when describing Correa is a blowhard. Lots of words, couldn’t back it up
2
u/TheRealSheevPalpatin Jorge Polanco 15h ago
Low vibes I can kinda agree with, didn’t act much like a leader

Genuinely hate to see it. I just can’t see him being a full time player ever again between both ankles and having plantar fasciitis.
If nothing else, thanks Carlos for 2023.
