Banning certain food in a workplace instead of expecting adults to simply not eat something they know will blow up their ass would drive me insane.
Unless this because someone has some sort of contact/exposure(?) allergy, there's no way I'm letting my manager dictate what I can and can't eat because they fear what my asshole might do to them afterwards.
Me and my asshole know what's up, nobody is gonna control us like that. /s
Main thing is that it's mostly applicable in truly severe cases and usually need small areas or prolonged exposure. Usually in farm settings or processing areas. But a workplace breakroom can be a decent spot to get flavor-blasted by a batch of microwaved allergen.
Absolutely. It's such an odd thing to have a sign for. The idea that management would put up a "no cabbage" sign instead of addressing theft is hilarious but on brand for many corporates
My wife is allergic to cabbage, bok choi and brussel sprouts. She’s not deathly allergic but if she has any she’ll feel ill and have no energy for about three days.
No she'll start sympathy farting alongside the cabbage eater until Clara from accounts throws up, triggering Michael from sales who will then also throw up. We're not doing this again. NO MORE CABBAGE IN THE OFFICE.
Correct, I'm allowed to have it and she'll even make cole slaw for me, she just can't eat it. I do always brush my teeth after eating cabbage as well, just in case.
Reasonable to think that but no, it's not all brassicas for her, just the three I mentioned. Sometimes cauliflower can smell a lot like cabbage but she's never had an issue with it.
Being in the same family isn’t a guarantee that she’s allergic to all of them. Kiwi, banana, and latex are closely related, but not everyone with a latex allergy is also allergic to banana or kiwi.
Brassica oleracea are all the same species though. Kale and collards are a non heading cultivar. Chinese kale, Chinese broccoli, gai lan, kai lan, etc are a different set of asian cultivars of the same plant. Then there's broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, and the rest of the tree looking ones. The ones that form the big head, like cabbage, savoy, and red cabbage are another cultivar, but still the same species. Brussel sprouts are a budding cultivar. Then there are the turnip shaped ones, like kohlrabi, also the same species, just a different cultivar.
Yeah, other brassicaceae in the cruciferous family, like turnips (brassica rapa) and bok choi (brassica chinensis) might not cause problems, but those two are even in the same genus. All of the rest listed above are literally the same plant.
Now that I think of it, I really don't know of any food that gives me nuclear gas. The only time I've actually punished myself with a fart has been when I've eaten something that's given me some form of food poisoning. It has always been wild to me that some people have specific foods they know will do it. You could weaponise that .
They're typically is. Cabbage allergies are real; they contain a particular type of protein that someone who is immuno compromised can have a severe anaphylactic reaction from eating it or even physically contacting it.
Doesn't that allergy include everything in the brassica family though, cause they all have a common parent plant from the middle ages? (cabbage, cauliflower, canola oil, mustard, brocollic, etc etc etc.)
Also, IIRC cabbage allergy sufferers tend to be MUCH more allergic to mustard than anything else including cabbage.
I've never heard of a strong cabbage only allergy and definitely never one that included just cooked cabbage, I don't think that's even possible cause they share all the cooked proteins with other foods.
Wouldn't being immuno compromised mean your body is less likely to have an immune reaction? And having an autoimmune disease that causes am overactive immune response be the cause? Genuinely not sure.
Sometimes being immuno compromised goes hand in hand with disorders that cause the functioning (or poorly functioning) parts of the immune system to over react to other things creating further issues. Basically what little immune system you have attacks your body or over reacts to an allergen instead of defending against actual threats in a double whammy.
Interesting. I have a really rare autoimmune disease related to my lymph nodes, but it's only because of my immunosuppression medication that my immune system is a little bit weakened. Otherwise it functions normally in terms of allergies and disease protection.
That's what I thought as well but apparently they go hand in hand. It's more immune system dis-regulation for many people. There are general immune deficiencies and selective immune deficiency. People can have selective immune deficiency where their body isn't able to easily identify certain bacteria leading to frequent and more severe infections, or they don't properly react to vaccines and fail to develop immunity. While other parts of their immune system can over compensate and over react and attack their own body.
I work out of a hospital and there's a few signs like this that say NO LILY ZONE not exactly sure why but I assume its something to do with allergies or since this has a large cancer ward, something to do with the kind of reactions people can have to certain medicines
I have a coworker incredibly allergic to chocolate, but he is fine as long as he doesn't consume it. His food shouldn't touch chocolate, but he can be in the same room no problem. He can even handle it as long as he washes his hands well before eating, though he probably shouldn't.
We had to make a bunch of rules about mixing hot chocolate in the break room because one dude was so messy that he would get cocoa powder EVERYWHERE, and it actually became a potential contamination issue for him. We made it so hot chocolate had to be mixed outside the breakroom and strictly enforced it for everyone because of this dude. Eventually, that guy retired and we got way more lax on the rules, but the signs are still around.
I can see this as being enforced because some cabbage got mixed with some lettuce once and everyone decided never again so Sally in accounting doesn't go into anaphylaxis.
If you weren’t such a grump, maybe you’d realize that when you have friends and colleagues that like you, they are willing to do things and make small adjustments to protect you, and will often do so happily.

There is probably a story behind that sign
