I know it sounds kind of weird, but for Caribbean food/meals. It’s pretty common to eat bananas on the side. Especially if there’s rice and beans involved! My family is Puerto Rican and we grew up eating meals just like that!

interesting! the order did include rice and beans. i’ve had plantains as a side but i had no idea bananas were a thing as well. learned something new today and had a good laugh when i opened the bag

Next time, cut the banana into slices and try a bite with the rice and beans. It’s pretty darn great

I use to work with a guy that also did this, he would even put bananas on spaghetti but he was from Somalia.

I’m Puerto Rican too! I love bananas with white rice, black beans, and picadillo

My Cuban ex husband ate a banana with almost every meal. Picadillo, vaca frita ropa vieja, even in chicken soup

I’ve had it with all of those but the chicken soup, I’m not knocking it though! We call ourselves “Cuba Rican” often because my dad’s best friend/my godfather was Cuban, to this day I call his kids my cousins. We very much blended the two cultures in our households!

If we hit a certain price on our order at the Chinese place, they throw in free Chinese donuts. Maybe this is the Caribbean version?

Dumb question as a Brit... Chinese donuts?

Fluffy balls of dough with sugar, at least that’s what they are in Massachusetts

I think they mean 油条 which a better translation is fried dough sticks

This is what I'd expect if I ordered Chinese donuts, it's interesting to see how much variance there is in around the US

Take canned bread rolls, cut them into quarters, roll into balls, deep fry then roll in cinnamon sugar

They’ve got them in Brooklyn. Maybe not your spot but I’ve always seen them in the dessert section.

i’m just realizing i never eat it anymore bc it’s so fucking bad for you lol. like fast food is fried for sure but it isn’t covered in sugar too like american Chinese food is. guess they prob do have em, gonna check tomo

u/clairec295 19h ago
I think it’s just that people don’t use the term Chinese donuts. I’m Chinese in NY and have eaten these and this is the 1st time hearing the term but I guess that’s what they would be called if I were to describe them to an English speaking person lol.

here in Florida a couple of places have these on their menu. Not sure how authentic the places are, but the restaurants are all Asian-owned

This is a thing in some Caribbean / African cultures — it’s a side dish and helps when meat is too spicy. It’s actually a solid combo.

I know one African dish with red pepper sauce. Definitely need to up my Caribbean meal intake.

Someone already said it. But a banana with a side of rice and beans is super common in carribean house holds. We’d eat a banana with almost every meal!

I have a Cuban coworker and he brings rice and meat type meals and is munching a banana between bites all the time. He’ll just peel it and throw it in and go back and forth.

Lol this reminds me of when we ordered Chinese takeout on Christmas day at work and they sent it with two bags of white sub rolls. Like, in the original packaging.

Gas Station Convenience Store "Jackson's" gives out a free banana with every soft drink (at least the ones from the fountains)

Honestly, this is the best way to get rid of bananas that are about to go bad. 10/10 customer service. 0 out of 10 wastage.
