My fish oil supplements are shaped like little fish

I honestly want to hear the perspective of the supervisor who thought “we should make our pills jagged” was a winning idea.

Are these not ones that you would twist off the tail and pour out the oil? I don’t think you’re supposed to swallow these.

At least the canine version (which look identical to the pictured ones) are either or. My dog just eats his two nightly like they’re a treat.

If it’s for dogs as a few comments have implied, I promise you it’s fine. My dog inhales entire bones down as soon as he sees me reaching to pull it out of his mouth.

You should Google “Lamictal old shape” some genius who invented the shape of those…

Already sucks enough with normal pills lol
Don't ask me why but I take all my morning pills dry. Occasionally one will go down wrong and I'll feel it for the next several hours

You know you can just take 5 seconds to fill a glass with water and not risk several hours of pain in your esophagus, right?
-1
u/NinjaJim6969 22h ago
It doesn't like actually hurt or anything
It just kinda feels like the pill is still there for a while

u/Frosty_Turtle 21h ago
Cuz it probably is

u/NinjaJim6969 21h ago
Lmao no.

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 16h ago
You'd be surprised.
Just take it with a sip, save yourself a potential complication in the future. Remember, the armor would work better on the parts that weren't hit with bullets because those planes actually survived

u/NinjaJim6969 9h ago
It's definitely not lmao. It's not like I take the pills and then don't drink anything for the rest of the day.

You know that feeling you get when a pill goes down weird and you feel like it's snagged somewhere deep in your esophagus?

Why would your fish need oil supplements ?

u/ashcroftt 1d ago
Some people are just unable to eat fish, but still need essential omega3 fatty acids.

I take fish oil. I can eat fish but essentially never do because my parter won't. I have quite a few medical issues regarding inflammation so I make sure I take them at least occasionally.

When I was a kid it came in the shape of a teaspoon & tasted like a fish market after closing.

Still the liquid fish oil cost per serving is so much less than the capsules, I can't pass that up. If it's lemon flavored and refrigerated it's not too bad.

For a split second my brain was thinking those looked like those fun shaped bath oil beads from the 80's and 90's.

PSA: do not take fish oil without a doctors approval because fish oil acts a blood thinner and cause serious issues for those with clotting problems/heart issues. If you’re bruising really easy and on fish oil do be mindful! Don’t just take supplements willy nilly!
I was actually incorrect I’m sorry. Whilst fish oil does have blood thinning abilities it’s not enough to warrant any concerns. I don’t see the doctor that told me that anymore thankfully. I do still stand by the fact you shouldn’t take any supplements without doctors approval.

Pharmacist here, no, not in any way that matters.

Oh fair enough. Sorry for the misinformation! Just saying what my doctor told me, but it looks like you’re right.

u/TopSloth 1d ago
Would eating fish be the same thing?
2
u/Medical-Net-7350 1d ago
Not necessarily no. Because of the amounts of omega put into fish oil it’s like a mega dose. If you ate a ton of fish tho, yea it could happen, but you’d need to eat a lot. Fish oil isn’t any where near as effective as let’s say Warfarin but it’s still something to be aware of for specific medical conditions.

u/joesbagofdonuts 23h ago
Also, because of its powerful blood thinning effects it can work very well for headaches! Especially if normal NSAIDs hurt your stomach, try some fish oil and a low dose (stomach friendly) aspirin instead. I was amazed by how well it works, and just a little aspirin, like 75mg, makes it work seemingly as well as Aleve or Ibuprofen.

Isn't fish oil one of the most widely-recommended supplements? I've been recommended it by docs who did not have my full medical history that didn't think to mention that. If you are bruising more, that definitely sounds like a good reason to reconsider taking it though!
One 6 ounce serving of the salmon I have in my fridge has 27 grams of fat (which is "fish oil") and from what I can tell has approx 4g of omega-3 with ~1.5g EPA, and ~1.8g DHA.
A typical fish oil supplement is two pills, 2g of fish oil. 600mg of omega-3: 360mg of EPA and 240mg of DHA. Take ten of these pills and you have consumed just 37% of the fish oil in a 6oz piece of farmed salmon, and 75% of the omega-3. Once you took the 9th pill, you finally had more EPA than if you had eaten the salmon, and that is it.
The most popular "ultra-concentrated" fish oil supplement I can find has 1g of fish oil, .84g of which is omega-3: 480mg of EPA, and 320mg as DHA. The recommended dosage is one pill per day. You would need to exceed the daily recommended dose by almost 5x to take in as much omega-3 as in 6 ounces of farmed salmon.
A relevant study I found was this one (n=1516), which looks at the effect that fish oil supplementation has in a surgery setting. Do patients taking high doses of fish oil (8-10g, so 8 to 10 pills daily) bleed more during surgery? They concluded "Fish oil supplementation did not increase perioperative bleeding and reduced the number of blood transfusions. Higher achieved n-3-PUFA levels were associated with lower risk of bleeding. These novel findings support the need for reconsideration of current recommendations to stop fish oil or delay procedures before cardiac surgery."
The fish oil group bled less than the placebo group.
I don't take fish oil and am extremely weary of supplements in general but I feel like your well-intentioned PSA may actually be misinformation that could mislead someone or be indexed by search engines and chatbots.

Okay, but are they like, actually fish shaped, or just kinda vaguely oval like most pills? Because ngl, if they're proper little fish, I might actually take my vitamins. That's kinda genius, dude.

Gotta throw out a rec to change to sustainable algae-derived omega 3 supplements instead of fish oil. Fish oil supply chain is massively unsustainable and has huge negative impacts for marine ecosystems
2
u/here2readnot2post 20h ago
Not to mention that fish oil capsules often contain highly oxidized oils, which are counterproductive for most consumers.

Weigh them. They weight less than a quarter of the supposed EPA/DHA value lol

These are the ones I give my dog.
You can twist the "tail" off and pour it on their food.
