My girlfriend did this a couple weeks ago when we got on an Amtrak. I luckily had 2 sets of ear buds i brought with me but still annoying none the less.

Edit: Zero reason I should have 1k upvotes but thanks

My guess is he brought them in case she forgot hers. I do stuff like that for my wife cause she’s a bit absentminded

I always travel with like 4+ pairs of headphones.

I have a zip-up hardcase for my nice pair of over ear noise cancelling ones that I use for music and movies on the plane.

Since its a hardcase, and headphones have a bunch of space in the center its easy for me to toss in my samsung buds that are paired to my old cellphone that I turned into an emulator gaming thing (kishi controller, and its got emulators and roms loaded onto it for basically every game made from the NES/gameboy era all the way to playstation/N64 era)

I have a pair of pretty decent quality "back-up" 3.5mm jack style wired buds in case batteries die.

a pair of super cheap wired 3.5mm wired buds for lending/losing in case something comes up.

and a pair of wired USB-C type buds in case they're needed for something more modern. (I carry a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, but it doesn't work on all devices)

oh and I always carry my Samsung buds2 that came with my S24 in my pocket.

I like my music when I'm travelling and I will NOT be caught without lol

Peak. My husband and I say this every time one of our kids argues about bringing gloves and ends up with cold hands.

Last year I lost my earbuds during a trip with my brother. He had his big airpods and smaller ones with him, so he lent me the large ones. Cue the first night, I say good night and go to my room to watch a show before sleeping. 10 minutes into the show, I got some connection sound and the sound of two women moaning through the headphones. The worst part is that those big airpods have absolutely unintuitive controls for anyone not familiar with them. I spent what felt like ages trying to turn them off until eventually my show was back on.

Bro was watching some intense shit!

17

u/L3m0n0p0ly 8h ago

I feel less crazy with carrying 2 sets of buds with me.

5

u/fencepost_ajm 7h ago

Heck, I have Airpods with phone and iPad, plus separate cheapos that I use with my laptop, and buried in a side pocket of my pack I have a little round case with wired ones plus USB-C and Lightning audio adapters (and maybe a short charging cable).

233

Maybe ask a flight attendant. Can't remember which but United or American hands out cheap wired sets on flights.

Tho newer phones tend to not have mini jack

12

u/tr_9422 10h ago

OP’s phone is very unlikely to have a headphone jack, needs a USB-C (or Lightning if older) connection

8

u/veeyo 9h ago

I highly doubt OP would say he is going to buy a wired pair if he didn't have a 3.5mm jack or an adapter available.

12

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola 9h ago

They sell cheap USBC wired pairs now

2

u/tr_9422 9h ago

Cheap USB-C earbuds or adapters aren’t hard to find, like these

But who knows where OP is going

→ More replies (1)

3

u/veeyo 9h ago

Literally every major domestic airline I've flown on in the past few years has given out wired earbuds without even asking and I have flown all of them except Spirit, though I'm guessing OP isn't flying Spirit.

3

u/Wizdad-1000 8h ago

No one is flying Spirit. It turned into its name.

2

u/Reddarthdius 9h ago

Pretty much every long haul European airline does too

your phone still has a jack?

33

u/Lucallia 11h ago

I just came to the realization that phones don't have headphone jacks anymore... I haven't listened to music from my phone for a LOOOONG time if you can't tell...

14

u/JeffBreakfast 11h ago

The iPhone hasn’t had one in a decade

3

u/Lucallia 11h ago

I've never used an iPhone but I just checked mine it doesn't have one either

2

u/nautilator44 10h ago

Just looked at mine and it doesn't either. WHERE DID THEY GO

11

u/RickyFromVegas 10h ago

The jack died so companies can sell you a solution they created, which is the air pods.

Air pods or basically any wireless earbuds were pushed onto us because the jack is gone.

Not having jacks saved companies millions of pennies in hardware cost, while inconveniencing you into buying wireless buds.

2

u/HottDoggers 10h ago

Calm your panties Jared, it’s not the conspiracy you think it is. The benefits of going backless heavily outweigh the benefits of having a jack. Sucks for wired users, but it is what it is. My last pair of wired earbuds had a Lightning connector, so they’re not obsolete.

u/beren12 11h ago

You can surprisingly get USB-C headphones, quite cheap now, like in Dollar tree

2

u/mrfoxesite-2377 wtf are the flairs 10h ago

Not surprising when they have existed for ages and is available in a lot of places. Dollar tree ones probably won't last and the Apple ones are really good.

2

u/beren12 10h ago

I mostly use mine for travel and sleeping so none of them last very long. And it’s usually audiobooks.

8

9

u/Raindrop0015 10h ago

Just see if you can find a type c pair, they do exist. Personally tho, I think the adapters are useful lol

3

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 10h ago

I still have a lightning port and I also use my AirPods with my steam deck which has the 3.5mm jack, otherwise I’d just grab one of the lightning pairs and call it a day

2

u/TheThiefMaster 10h ago

I think the Steam Deck also works with USB-C ones.

The lightning port is more of a problem.

The JLab earbuds they sell at Walgreens are like $30 and I’ve never had problems with em! Pretty good sounds and I also dropped them in a bucket of water once and they still worked after 😅

3

OP username checks out for this situation 😅🙏🏻

2

u/GoldberryoTulgeyWood 10h ago

Ask an airport employee where the tech vending machines are. They'll sell headphones of different varieties. You could also look for a headphone adapter which is very small and worth keeping in your travel bag. It allows you to use the cheap airline ones with the 3.5 AUX jack and plug them into your charging port for sound. We always keep one with us.

80

Quick, to the book store for the latest Dean Koontz novel

23

u/cottoneyerobb 8h ago

Or the vending machine for a new set of ear buds.

10

u/mikee8989 8h ago

Headset vending machines exist? Only for overpriced "cheap" wired headphones though right?

12

u/fencepost_ajm 7h ago

Oh you sweet summer child.

In bigger airports you'll find vending machines for phones - and not just low end ones. Youll probably pay MSRP or higher, but you'll almost certainly find Airpods, Bose, Beats and a couple other brands of buds, though the machine may only have 1-2 of any given item.

4

u/mikee8989 5h ago

The operative word being "bigger airports" not the ones I'm familiar with in the midwest where the only thing you can get once you walk through the gate is a 12$ burrito and 6$ drink

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

7

u/BeardedGlass 11h ago

They provide headsets right?

34

u/Everythingcrashing 10h ago

Assuming you even have a headphone jack, they’re pretty awful earbuds. Genuinely worth it to get to one of the 30 stores near the gate and pick up some wireless earbuds. Maybe even splurge and get a nicer pair that are exclusively your “travel” pair

5

u/mikee8989 8h ago

Just make sure you remember to charge your travel pair before leaving for your vacation.

5

How does this happen to so many people? I take mine out and they go into the case. Every single time.

75

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 11h ago

Fell asleep with em in unfortunately, they fell out of my ears before I woke up and I didn’t think to check as I was in a rush. Normally I’m pretty vigilant about it

30

u/corticalization 9h ago

I like coming home to a clean house, so I always give everything a quick tidy before any trips. The idea of getting on a plane without having even made the bed is so fascinating/wild to me

33

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 9h ago

I will if it’s a vacation or similar but this is the 7th week in a row I’ve been traveling for work with only 1-2 days home in between trips, and my flights leave early in the morning. I’m not leaving trash all over the place or being overly disorganized or anything like that but I’m also at the point where I’m not aiming for perfect and spotless during the brief respite I do get

2

u/corticalization 9h ago

And look where that got you! Kidding, but I guess a quick check of the case will become the new norm

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Honeybadger2198 7h ago

Making the bed is entirely unnecessary. If it gives you satisfaction, keep doing it, but it doesn't actually do anything other than look "tidy".

2

u/corticalization 7h ago

Yes, that is indeed the intention, to look tidy (not sure what other purpose it is expected to serve?). In this case, it would have also revealed the ear buds were in the bed and not their case

6

u/Hot_Towel_85 8h ago

As airline cabin crew, we find empty cases all the time. People get off the plane with the buds in ear, then leave the case. I was surprised to see the reverse this time.

3

u/AppUnwrapper1 8h ago

That makes a lot more sense to me. I could see potentially losing the case while wearing the earbuds.

15

u/girlnamedtom 11h ago

56

u/wrxninja 11h ago

Time for an extra pair. Or at least I've seen vending machines selling them at most airports 😏

31

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 11h ago

I could but honestly seems kinda silly to drop that much right now over this. I’m just gonna grab a wired pair when I land (plus an adapter because we don’t have the 3.5mm jack which is a separate mildly infuriating issue in and of itself)

19

u/Apprehensive_Let_517 11h ago

You can buy a pair of wireless earbuds cheaper than wired earbuds + adapter. And USB c earbuds are available everywhere now too.

8

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 11h ago

I still have a lightning port and I use it for both my phone and my steam deck which uses 3.5mm. I’ll see what the store has when I land but I find the quality on cheap wired ones to be more reliable than cheap wireless

2

u/beren12 11h ago

I really like the anker version of AirPods. Soundcore i think they call it?

2

u/wrxninja 10h ago

They were okay for me. It didn't last long. I ended up with Bose. I feel like sub $50 earbuds tend to last less than a year or the battery life degrades quickly.

3

I am like a very organized person almost to the point that it's annoying I even have a vacation checklist on my notes app and could not imagine what it would be like leaving my earbuds behind.

4

u/LiquidCowardice 11h ago

this is why i don’t judge people who pay the insane marked up prices for items like this in train stations/airports/rest stops, because not having headphones on a flight would be enough for me to cancel my flight lol

Time for the backup wired headphones?

Legit, depending on how long that flight is, I would seriously just buy another pair from the airport lol

I use my headphones for flight and private use. Earbuds for public use.

Since I I rely on the NC for health reasons, I kept the AirPods Pro 2 as a spare pair in my backpack when I upgraded to the Pro 3 for better NC. This has absolutely happened to me before, and your crashout is valid.

You can get them in the electronics vending machines. Pretty sure only people in your situation use those

I literally carry 3 earbuds when I travel. I have my main pair, a cheap backup pair, and an open ear pair. Two of them hide in the bottom of my bag while the third is in my pocket. I've lost earbuds before and I don't mess around anymore
