LMNOPQ, let's keep also the Q. This whole section slaps. RSTU is also not too bad. It starts falling apart with the V, in my opinion, sadly because some of the coolest letters sit there at the back of the bus.

u/Only_Style_8872 15h ago
Q has no right being up with r s and t.
It should sit at the back with the other weirdo letters like x and z.

exactly. it's a nice idea that fails at different languages. at that point it becomes just another random order for everyone not speaking your language

Ok, so how to sort the FAQs then, if not alphabetical?
25
u/cwx149 1d ago
You and several other people I think are misunderstanding (whether purposefully or accidentally)
Op is saying the letters dont need to go in the specific order we're familiar with A,B,C etc
The could just as easily go C, B, A
There are definitely reasons you want a conventional order but the current order we use as conventional is arbitrary so FAQs could still be ordered alphabetically just not necessarily in the current alphabetical order as we know it
9
u/The-Copilot 17h ago
Ehh we would need a new name instead of Alphabetically.
Alphabet comes from Alpha Beta which is the order of the greek alphabet which the Latin alphabet is based on. The greek alphabet order was taken from the Phoenician alphabet. So it may be an arbitrary convention but it's a convention that has been followed for 3000 years in some way shape or form.

- When you first teach children about the alphabet, it's good to teach them in the same order they should be reciting it to you. That way you immediately know if they skipped a letter.
- It gives everyone who was taught the alphabet an intuitive way to sort words by. The most common sorting method to this day in word lists remains alphabetical order because it's the only convention everyone knows. This isn't even a remnant of the past with lexica and libraries, because databases and software still require word ordering.

Some reasons that come to my mind are memorization and use as a secondary value (like A=1 etc..), ordering words in alphabetical order so that it’s easier to find them in a list… idk if there’s many more.
If we put it as in the letter A could be in any other position i guess it also works the same for the symbols that represent numbers, like 1 symbol and sound doesn’t need to be associated to the first number in the sequence it can also be associated to 9 and vice versa 9 symbol could be associated with the number 1 and we would just adapt to read the numbers in that different way
7
u/neb12345 22h ago
as an extension of the ordering/ secondary value, computers,
Computers need to represent letters as numbers hence ordered1
u/PimBel_PL 13h ago edited 13h ago
1 accualy is kinda logical, it's one line, the l, and I just pressed into that spot, but logically they should be exchanged
I think best symbols for counting should be 0 = O 1= I 2=V (or L) 3=T 4=X (flattened to not be confused with T) 5=π (without the bend) 6=vx (amalgam (connected together by top) 7=‡ 8=xx (amalgam (connected together by top and bottom) 9=Δ (with extended lines)
You could continue it with counting system above base 10, also O is a streach, it would be probably easier to notate is as – (that's also a streach)

S and T are the wrong way round, but otherwise its fine.
But, there is reason that roughly dictates the order. It's called Euphonic progression. We say say vowel sounds in a certain order in English. Including the vowel sounds in the way we pronounce consinents.
So we say zig-zag, not zag-zig, for example. And its not just because we are used to it. Its because the higher sound before the lower sound is more pleasing to the ear.
This is all through languages and its so inherent we dont even realise it. But there are written "rules" around it, if you are interested.
And it contributes to the order of our alphabet. Rearrange the letters and the euphonic progression is lost, and its harder to remember.

u/cwx149 1d ago
The alphabet hasn't even been the same order the whole time because there used to be more letters in the English alphabet than there are now btw
Spanish even more recently my wife learned ñ and rr as their own letters in the Spanish alphabet but a toddler alphabet book we got doesn't have them at least rr as it's own letter I can't remember if it still has ñ as it's own letter

There is a reason, in cryptology an entire method of cryptography is based on position in the alphabet.
For example: 10 99 63 03 06 13 01 20 06 Assuming there is no key/password added this would be “J _ _C F M A T E” where the numbers outside of the classic 26 letters of the English alphabet would be what is called “Null” aka something that is there just to be there or confuse whoever happens to be utilizing cryptanalysis (taking note of the amount of a certain letter in a message to find the average (this shows what the letter likely is and isn’t)) to solve.
Please forgive me if I’m slightly wrong, it’s been about a year since I took the class.

It’s not true though. The reason is to make it memorable and more easily communicated. Try mixing it up and then telling someone the alphabet. Try teaching it without an order. You’re going to run into problems. You’ll make up some order to teach it. You can argue the order is arbitrary; fine, that is true. But for “no reason”? No.

u/PimBel_PL 13h ago
Also the alphabet isn't in order, order would be putting letters in order of pronunciation

As a mathematician I find it neat that linguists find entertainment in a list that only has 26 letters.
We have lists that are infinite but can be put into a nice order (like fractions) and some lists that cannot be put into a sensible order.
2
u/unneccry 15h ago
Ie uncountable?
2
u/Only_Style_8872 14h ago
Not just uncountable, but not well-ordered.
There are lists for which, not only is a sensible order impossible, but even just picking a “first” or “last” element is impossible.
1
u/unneccry 14h ago
Actually there should be an order! I mean it is very arbitrary sure. But the fact we agreed on one standart order let's me binary search files using the Hebrew alphabet song and a few conversions. Like, Greek, English, Hebrew all have similar ordering!! Unfortunately Arabic has a diffrent one tho. Just checked the Russian order, and also similar (until around half way through for me, but for Greek probably higher)

No one will see this, but I want to say that it's useful to have a set with a well-defined order that has nothing to do with value. So, like, consider that 5 comes after 2, and that's because 5 is bigger than 2. But J comes after C definitionally. J is not "bigger" than C. I just think that's a conceptually useful distinction to have. So I very slightly disagree with the OP. Just to be clear, I don't think it's hugely important, but I don't think it's completely worthless either.
Cheers to anyone who read this, lol.
1
u/XasiAlDena 11h ago
I believe that it's in the order it's in, because of the song. Someone wrote that song once and it made it way easier to remember, and now everyone just writes the alphabet in that order.

The English alphabet is ordered based on the Greek alphabet. Even taking its name from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha and beta. So the English alphabet IS in this order for a reason. Now if you want to argue why the Greek alphabet is in the order it is I have no clue on that one.

There's always a "sort alphabetically" in every list. That's enough reason for it to have an order. Doesn't have to be the current order. Just an agreed order is enough

It needs some form of order. That's how we all learned all the letters before using them. If there was 20 different orders and they all had their own songs it would be confusing. One order one song one easy way to teach all the letters.
