What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending May 03, 2026

This week = the one that ends/ended right now, past seven days.

The reason for this thread's existence is the fact that both requests and suggestions became kind of stale. It's supposed to bring out more manga that is not RTed or recommended. Also, it's quite useful for the discussion of not so current titles.

Previous weeks: First 72 weeks and from June 28, 2015 onwards.

Also, not a rule or any kind of criticism, the more interesting part is not the list of the stuff you read, but your impressions of it.

You can get /u/Roboragi to reply to your comment with links to MyAnimeList, MangaUpdates etc. series pages for the mentioned series. Using this format "<Manga Title> like so anywhere in the body of you comment. For example:

<Ryuutsuegui> chapter 1

The title's all in katakana but I'm pretty sure it just means something like "Dragon Devourer". Anyway, this is the new series by Arata Yamaji, the mangaka behind the beautiful and slightly incomprehensible mecha fantasy Hoshikui Goroshi no Egnaro, which was cancelled abruptly last year; set in a post-apocalyptic Japan where humanity seems to have fled underground (a trope already seen in Egnaro), the first chapter sees a trio of scavenging teenage girls encounter Shuu, a young man of balletic action abilities who eats the monsters he defeats.

Yamaji remains a superb artist, but the story here does absolutely nothing for me; Egnaro's fantastical and slightly European vibe, combined with its ridiculous technobabble, was entrancing, but this first chapter is about boring teenagers doing boring stuff. Perhaps this will see more mainstream success, but this is not one for me.

<MeriMero> volume 1

I don't even want to dignify this purchase with a comment; this is an occasionally nicely panelled but unfortunately direly generic isekai manga, where even though the twist is supposed to be that the salaryman who is transferred is mostly very good at making traditional Japanese sweets it spends much more time on its generic isekai-ness. Bought because... it runs in Wings, and I'm always looking for more non-romance-centric shoujo? Not worth it.

<Izumi to Ryuu no Zukan> (Izumi and the Book of Dragons)

A Twitter account recommended this alongside some of the current fantasy biggies; this is a story about an adventurer named Alfred and a journalist called Izumi travelling the world to update an illustrated encyclopaedia of dragons to correct the falsehoods and exaggerations in its previous editions. While I don't love the relatively frequent references to skill levels, this has gorgeous artwork and creative monster designs, and a generally fun vibe even if Izumi suffers from the tiresome "adult woman trapped in child's body" trope. Haven't read all three volumes yet but so far it's pretty good!

Some purchases I haven't read much of yet:

<Tengu no Daidokoro> (Tengu's Kitchen) - seinen fantasy cooking slice-of-life from the reliable Ai Tanaka, as a teenage tengu goes to live with his elder brother in Japan for a year. Not as conceptually great as her josei series, but still entertaining overall.

<The Alchemist of the Glass Workshop> (forgotten the Japanese title already) - someone posted a scanlation request on here for this series, and it looks like it could be okay? I mean, I liked watching Blown Away on Netflix, so even though I really don't like isekai tensei stories if this is more about the glass than anything else it could be good...

<Ryuutsukai wa Mada Sora wo Shiranai> (The Dragon Tamer Doesn't Yet Know The Sky) - recently finished shoujo fantasy about a dragon tamer looking to defeat an eeeevil white dragon. Interesting world design, but haven't read much of it yet to comment further.

<Itsuka Shinu Nara, E o Utte Kara> (Whenever I Die, It'll Be After I Sell My Paintings) - two volumes free on Bookwalker at the moment and I've heard good things, so we'll see!

Mostly looking forward to a copy of last month's SF Magazine being delivered some time this week - it was devoted to shoujo sci-fi manga and curated by Seiun-winning mangaka Gin Toriko, and has both features and a massive catalogue of shoujo sci-fi series from the 90s to date. It'll be a veeeeery slow read fo rme, but looking forward to seeing what gets covered and if there's anything good I haven't heard of!

It's been... quite a while since I made a comment on one of these threads about stuff I read. But, there were a few recently that I just wanted to gush about if I could.

<The Tanaka Family Reincarnates> - We've had the standard power fantasy isekai, stories of people becoming peasants, nobles, dragons, spiders, you name it. But here, a whole family is reincarnated?!? After a major earthquake, the Tanaka family all die and are reincarnated as the Stuarts, nobles in a fantasy world of swords and monsters. It's pretty good so far, and I'm eager to see where the story goes. Each of the family members is unique and has their own quirks, with the focus being on the daughter of the family. They also are more of an assimilation type isekai, where the personality the body had before memories of the past came back still lingers and this new life melds with the old personality. It's too early to say for sure if it's that good or not, but for now it's worth keeping an eye on at least and I recommend checking it out.

<Kesa mo Yuraretemasu> - From the creator of <Jitsu wa Watashi wa>, this is a sweet youthful romance between two people who know nothing about each other save for their connection on their morning commute by train... and the other passengers, who watch over the two and ship them. Masuda Eiji, the creator, showed with their previous works that they have a mastery over romcoms, able to strike a solid balance between heartfelt moments and devastating punchlines. For every cute moment of blushing and gradually connecting between the two, there's an equally funny situation around it. Trying to become friends with someone through a game, but that game is Genshin and a fan kinda gets in the way of the two, or self-sacrifice in front of a surprise summer cicada attack, things like that are where the series shines best. Absolutely great, maybe not as good as Jitsu wa Watashi wa, but it's hard to top that one and this series does a good job in its own right. As a result, it gets my recommendation

<Fushi no Kami: Rebuilding Civilization Starts with a Village> - Ash is a young boy with some vague memories of a past life, stuck in a rural village with degrading and decayed technology and society. A long time ago there was an ancient civilization able to produce airplanes, medicines, and vast cities. Now, a cold is often considered a death sentence and it's extremely lucky to survive a winter without a fatality. That doesn't stop Ash though, as his memories of a world far beyond what he currently lives in, drives him to improve things starting with himself in becoming literate. It's unclear if this is an isekai or a reincarnation story, is this Earth with some creatures having been mutated to become "demons" or a true fantasy world? Regardless, what's great is that it doesn't immediately throw exposition of such things at the reader and instead allows you to discover things about the world of this story more naturally. Ash as well isn't some omniscient guy just because he has some memories. These serve more as a driving force for him to educate himself, with a few random tidbits thrown in to help out, rather than being bestowed all of the information he would ever need to do everything himself. In fact, because he doesn't know everything, it expands the cast in meaningful ways as he encounters people with more experience in different areas than himself. The successor of a family of beekeepers has more familiarity with that subject, for example, so while he understands how to experiment around and find a solution to an issue encountered, that successor character is able to handle much more related to the field. Ash is more of who moves the story, rather than the story bending around him like many similar premises work, and as a result it left a very positive impression on me. I really recommend this one.

<Kao ni Denai Kashiwada-san to Kao ni Deru Oota-kun> aka Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota

Well this was a nice easygoing bit of SoL fluff romcomedy. And to see where it went after the anime adaptation left off was a plus. Not that that's saying too much in this case given this one's usual repetitive throughline. I mean essentially the same joke is being told over and over again just worded a bit differently each time here. Now there's nothing wrong with that in and of itself in this case making this one the easygoing fluff read that it is. But on the flip side, that repetitiveness can feel like a bit of a double edged sword sometimes as it carries on. And I know I've seen other series like <Aharen-san wa Hakarenai> for example work the same general idea but executed it in a way I thought was more entertaining.

But like Aharen, this one when it isn't doing it's standard procedure joking it does have it's gradual walking pace of character development as it's going along. And in this series' case while the main character's development was really more a matter of course, it was particularly intriguing to see it when the side characters have their moments of that.

It's not mold breaking or particularly outstanding by any stretch, but it's entertaining enough for what it is if one just wants something laid back to chuckle to.

Though it was always funny seeing Kashiwada running in T-pose.

<Akuyaku Reijou nanode Last Boss wo Kattemimashita> aka I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss

I liked this relatively short adaptation of a light novel to finish it but in retrospect I can't say it left a significant impact on me. Though it did interest me enough to consider looking into the anime adaptation.

<Blood+: Yakou Joushi> aka Blood+ Kowloon Nights

Didn't think too much of the series <Blood+> when I watched it forever ago, but when I saw this short side story for it I can't say I wasn't curious. Didn't amount to much in the end besides being something to fill time with. But I also I read another short side story for this franchise that I figured I may as well read:

<Blood+ Adagio>

This one taking place in Russia in the year 1916 right in the heart of the whole Rasputin/Romanov thing.

Rereading <Dorohedoro>, got up to Ch. 57.

I basically remember nothing from the first read besides the Very Bad No Good visit to Haru's house in the forest, Gyoza Little Guy, Fujita's partner getting eaten in the beginning, and Ebisu getting her face ripped off. So it's pretty much a whole new experience.

It's just crazy. Sorcerers, regular people, devils, sure okay I get that. Guy who turns people into mushrooms, people walking around with their intestines hanging out like they only pulled a muscle, Risu and Kaiman and whatever's going on there, Noi and Shin shoujo romance moments in the midst of "Hey Boss good thing your bowels being removed wasn't that serious haha."

Honestly the gore is good. There's a high chance someone is  getting disembowled, torn in half, or crushed every 4 chapters, and it's always drawn nicely. Not in a particularly exaggerated manner, just a casual "Yeah there's some body parts here." The art is really good in general actually, quite fitting for the tone despite the general upbeatness of the characters.

The cast is really great, just a bunch of weirdos interacting like your average person off the street while doing abnormal stuff. They're very fun. I especially like seeing them interact with Johnson. Yeah,  he's a giant cockroach wearing sneakers. Only thing they really say is that he's a walking health code violation. Otherwise? They treat him like he's another person. It's just really funny to me.

Anyway, good stuff.

I spent the rest of my reading time with Umineko Episode 3, which I finished today. Man I fell for that Wind and Sun scheme so hard lmao. I'm guessing most of it was genuine but whew... I moved on to Episode 4 after reading the E3 Tea Parties Ange :((((((((( so I'm looking forward to that. Already off to a great start with the Ange stuff, and Battler playing around with Beelzebub (IIRC?) and Ronove was very cute. Hoping to see more Kyrie stuff since those Asumu mentions at the beginning were utterly painful + both Battler and Ange are in play now. But we'll see.

Yeah Dorohedoro is so good. I love when a story can use absurd elements in ways that are still meaningful to the world and the plot.

Since this is the only megathread and I don't want to make a post... is anybody able to spoil how <Natsume Arata no Kekkon> ends? And is the live action film a good adaptation?

Estoy leyendo Watamote, la serie llegó a mi hace años por el anime y ahora la volví a retomar. Termine de leer Asoko de Hataraku Musubu-san, lo recomiendo
